The original building dates back to the 1904 World s Exposition. Construction of the existing structure consists of full height masonry walls supported on spread footings. The ongoing St Louis Art Museum expansion includes the addition of a below grade parking structure, a grand stairway entrance through the center of the original grand hall, additional elevators and behind the scenes passageways for utilities and moving large art exhibits. All of this work is being completed while the existing museum is open to the public and the museum s priceless art collection is on display. The presentation will focus on the design build earth retention system. Vibration monitoring insured no damage to the artwork contained in the building. The presentation will also briefly discuss the risk management of working on a high profile, high risk project. The earth retention was a 2010 Keystone Award winner. He has actively returned to his pre-spring ritual of building an elaborate Leprechaun trap in our (small) South City backyard. The latest incarnation involves an elaborate setup of powerful magnets designed to trap a Leprechaun and his gold. I pointed out that gold is not magnetic (and proved it by testing my wedding ring), but he was undeterred and came up with a clever and different way to incorporate magnets into his trap. I for one am hopeful that this year s version involves fewer mommy traps (the holes he likes to dig in the back yard for trapping the Leprechaun) than in past years. It is wonderful to see so much creativity and innovation in one so young. I m sure that I m not the only one among us who, as a kid, drove my mother crazy by taking everything apart just so I could see how it works and then have the fun of putting it back together again. It seems that what goes around really does come around. And, in a world where sustainability is coming to the forefront more often, it s nice to see my son s own technical version of going green for St. Patrick s Day. Sometimes I feel greenwashed with all the green products, advice, and techniques now available to us in our personal & engineering lives. Those of you who enjoy the numerous Lenten fish fries that abound in St. Louis this month can even check out a fish fry s level of sustainability at I need to remind myself that it is good that awareness is building and sustainability is going mainstream, regardless of how the word gets out. ASCE s Vision 2025 statement states that we are entrusted by society to create a sustainable world. That s a hefty charge that challenges us to look beyond the simple green solutions and to truly examine every part of what we design to reach true sustainability. Our Younger Members are going green as they plan a Sustainability Forum this spring. I ve always been impressed with our YM s commitment to service. (Join them for Rebuilding Together on May 5, and I promise you won t only give, but receive.) I m even more impressed with their enthusiasm for sustainability. If you are a younger member or not, I encourage you to attend the Sustainability Forum they are planning for later this spring. An introduction to the ISI Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System, Envision, is headlining the event. Even if you are pretty sure you ve already got enough initials behind your name and do not plan to become an ISI Certified Sustainability Professional, the principles behind Envision are good tools for us to use on all our projects and to help us reach our goal of creating a sustainable world. Have a great spring, think about how you can incorporate sustainability into your work today, enjoy some fish fries, and.let me know if you see any Leprechauns! Sincerely, Elise Ibendahl, PE, CFM ASCE St. Louis Section Newsletter March 2012 Page 2 of 22

7 Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) Program Introduction to Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) Map Your Neighborhood is a program designed to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters and is offered through many local emergency management offices. Prepared neighborhoods are more effective in their disaster response and have an increased capacity to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a disaster. In a disaster, the neighbors living around you are your most immediate source of help. Traditional responders (police, fire, medical, and utility) are quickly overwhelmed by demand. Knowing what to do in the first hour (THE GOLDEN HOUR) of a disaster response may save a life, reduce the severity of injuries, and reduce the amount of damage that you, your family and neighbors sustain. Web-based useful info. The State of Washington Emergency Management website: The Missouri Seismic Safety Commission & Central US website: mssc.missouri.edu/map.shtml & newmadrid2011.org/myn For more information, see the recent WSIU, "In Focus" program featuring MYN creator, Dr. LuAn Johnson: and a Carbondale, IL local MYN meeting held at Liberty Villas: You or your local faith-based or service organization, or a community or county office may inquire with Steve Besemer (steve.besemer@sema.dps.mo.gov, ) or Greg Hempen (greg.hempen@urs.com, ) to obtain Map Your Neighborhood information for Missouri. Certificates to document Personal Development Hours will be provided. Organizers say the conference will be of interest to contractors, public agencies, consulting engineers, testing labs, aggregate producers, equipment technical representatives, and ready mix, cement and admixture suppliers. This course is intended to provide graduate students an opportunity to study the formation of rivers and the laws governing river regulation and improvements, including navigation and flood protection along with principals of sediment transport. An objective of the course is to understand the geomorphological processes of streams and application of those principals to a real stream in St Louis County. In addition, channel processes and approaches to streambank stabilization techniques will be discussed and observed. Both hand calculations and computer methods for stream channel processes and hydraulic calculations will be developed. In addition, the course will involve physical data collection in a St Louis County creek for use in the course with an end result of providing a plan for stream stabilization plan for a particular segment of the stream. On completion of the course, students should be able to understand the aspects of planning and designing streambank stabilization methods and determine the hydraulic and geomorphic processes of a streams as well as erosion control techniques. Students will have a final design project for a stream segment identifying dominant geomorphic processes and stream protection countermeasures with appropriate open channel hydraulics and present the information in a professional setting. Computer applications such as HEC- RAS and Rivermorph may be employed as needed as part of the course work. Other computer or hand computations may be performed for geomorphic determinations or for flow rates. For further information regarding enrolling in this or any other graduate courses at the MS&T Engineering Education Center at UMSL, visit MS&T's website at Call (314) or mailto:msteec@umr.edu for more information ASCE St. Louis Section Newsletter March 2012 Page 17 of 22
