They kindly did the math for me and pointed out that I still had a full five months left. That certainly seemed like a long road ahead. Now, as I look at the remaining four months of my tenure, I realize that we aren t as active during the summer months and that this is, in fact, my second-to-last President s Message as there will not be another formal newsletter until September. So, while I have enjoyed acting as the St. Louis Section President, I have to say I am looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. May turned out to be one of our most active months yet. Our Society President-Elect Greg DiLiretto s presentation at the Younger Member s Sustainability Forum was enlightening, and a hearty round of thanks goes out to our new Sustainability Chair, Marty Chorkey, and the team of Younger Members who helped him plan the forum and many other activities related to Greg s visit. Personally, I enjoyed the VIP tour of the Mississippi River Bridge construction and I will never forget the memorable side show at the Thursday night Cardinal s game that I attended with Greg and some of our younger members. We are fortunate to have outstanding examples of Civil Engineering accomplishments all around us here in St. Louis that Greg saw on the landmark tour led by our History & Heritage chair, Jeff Fouse, and I m sure we all look forward to contributing to many more landmarks in years to come. I hope that everyone received their copy of our annual Membership Roster. Many thanks to our Membership Roster editor, Karen Frederich, who organizes this effort and produces the document single-handedly each year. If you noticed something in the roster that wasn t quite right, I ask that first you take a moment of appreciation for Karen s hard work and then log on to and check your PRIMARY profile. Note that while Karen does some minor cleanup on the contact information we receive directly from the Society, we do not receive information about your secondary profile-it is simply not provided to us, we do not have access to it, and we cannot use what we do not have. 3 We are going to reissue the roster in the Fall, so please take some time now to make sure your primary profile information reflects exactly what you d like to see. While you re looking at the roster, also take a moment to be thankful for the hard work not just of our roster editor, but of all our volunteers, national committee members, award /scholarship recipients, and those who led the activities highlighted in the roster s pages. I can t help but be thankful to each and every one of our volunteers, especially as I look back on the whirlwind of activities we ve held this year. Thank you! 4 Younger Member Events The YMG is on summer vacation! Have a wonderful summer. Be sure to check your inboxes for updates about our Summer BBQ and various activities we are already planning for after the summer break. If you have any ideas or questions for upcoming YM Events, please jepettibone@hornershifrin.com I wanted to thank all of you for the time you put in this year for Rebuilding Together. You guys gave up your time to make Mrs. McLittle more comfortable and safe in her own home than she has been in years. Lots of visible (new door, garden, etc.) and not so visible (insulation, tuck pointing, etc.) tasks where done. Mrs. For all YM questions, please contact YM committee chair Jordan E. Pettibone jepettibone@hornershifrin.com McLittle was so grateful for the time we gave her and so happy and excited with everything we did. Everyone did a great job and we have the sunburns, paint stains, and sticky insulation on our hands to prove it. You guys were her heroes. Thanks for everything. -- Britt Marron, EIT, CH2M Hill 2012 Rebuilding Together House Captain for ASCE One more bit of info. Did you know we have a Facebook Page? 11 University Course Offerings Considering Returning to School for a MS or a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering? Take a look at SIUE. Eleven different transportation engineering courses are available to graduate students, including Transportation Security, Advanced Geometric Design, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Transportation Safety Systems, Computer Simulation in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, and Traffic Studies, for example. Nationally-recognized teachers who are also professional engineers teach these courses and mentor students through graduate school. Students have the opportunity to use state-of-the-practice research and teaching facilities including a traffic signal lab, a vehicle driving simulator, and advance computer traffic simulation software. Assistantships are available for most full-time MS or Ph.D. students, including a monthly salary plus a full tuition waiver. Apply today at MS&T CE-337 River Mechanics And Sediment Transport Location: MSD Date/Time: Meets Wednesdays 6:00 PM 8:45 PM, Fall Semester begins August Instructor: Gary T Moore MS, P.E. This course is intended to provide graduate students an opportunity to study the formation of rivers and the laws governing river regulation and improvements, including navigation and flood protection along with principals of sediment transport. An objective of the course is to understand the geomorphological processes of streams and application of those principals to a real stream in St Louis County. In addition, channel processes and approaches to streambank stabilization techniques will be discussed and observed. Both hand calculations and computer methods for stream channel processes and hydraulic calculations will be developed. In addition, the course will involve physical data collection in a St Louis County creek for use in the course with an end result of providing a plan for stream stabilization plan for a particular segment of the stream. On completion of the course, students should be able to understand the aspects of planning and designing streambank stabilization methods and determine the hydraulic and geomorphic processes of a streams as well as erosion control techniques. Students will have a final design project for a stream segment identifying dominant geomorphic processes and stream protection countermeasures with appropriate open channel hydraulics and present the information in a professional setting. Computer applications such as HEC-RAS and Rivermorph may be employed as needed as part of the course work. Other computer or hand computations may be performed for geomorphic determinations or for flow rates. For further information regarding enrolling in this or any other graduate courses at the MS&T Engineering Education Center at UMSL, visit MS&T's website at Call (314) or mailto:msteec@umr.edu for more information.
