1 Civil Source Civil Engineers Make the Difference They Build on the Quality of Life s Message ASCE Utah Section Newsletter The Beginning of an Exciting Year By Brent Packer, PE I recently attended the ASCE Region 8 October Photo: The YMF outreach kits were a success last year, especially when candy was involved! Contact Cable Murray if you would like to participate in this program, it is a great opportunity to get involved! Assembly Meeting held in Boise, Idaho, September 27-29, The assembly consisted of Region 8 governors, section presidents, and other ASCE guests from Utah, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, and Alaska. I observed the board of governors hard at work addressing Region 8 issues such as communications, awards, resolutions, and finances. Each section president, including myself, gave a section report about membership activity, participation, goals, and significant successes the section and branches are having. The Utah Section report went very well, thanks to your support and participation. The other sections in our region are also doing very well. They shared ideas such as promoting ASCE with radio advertisements, hosting dinners for engineers and young students, and promoting legislation that improves local infrastructure through civil engineering projects. We also went on technical tours to the Arrowrock Dam, Diversion Dam, Columbia Treatment Plant and Marden Treatment Plant in the Boise area. The people of Boise have done a fantastic job collecting, treating, and distributing water thanks to civil engineering. Overall, I was very impressed with the Region 8 Assembly Meeting and the excellent leadership given by the board of governors. I was also amazed with the influence ASCE and the civil engineering profession has on our community in the western United States. Brent Packer, P.E. ASCE, Utah Section

Northern Utah Branch Wasatch Front Branch The Wasatch Front Branch will hold our next luncheon on October 19, 2007 at noon at A Classic Choice Catering. The speaker will be Mike Wilson, General Manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy. Mike will make a presentation that will include the background of the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy, various agency relationships, a look at existing water delivery infrastructure, the master planning that led to the Metro Water Project, and an update on the project (including expansion of Little Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant, the new Point of the Mountain Water Treatment Plant, and the Point of the Mountain Aqueduct). 3 ASCE Utah Section Newsletter Central Utah Branch First, we would like to thank William Bigelow from Hansen, Allen & Luce for his presentation at our previous luncheon. He provided an excellent summary of Micro Hydro Power applications and when to consider this design feature. It was very informative and hopefully will help us look for opportunities to apply the concepts. Our next luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 18 th from noon to 1:30 p.m. The location for this luncheon is still to be determined. We will send an to all CUB members after the location is finalized. George Matus of Kern River Gas will be speaking about the expansion of their piping system. Several items will be discussed that could be applicable in your engineering endeavors. We have also scheduled our November luncheon for Thursday, November 15 th from noon to 1:30 p.m. This luncheon is scheduled to be held at the Brick Oven in Provo. The speaker for this luncheon will be Dal Freeman, the Park Engineer at Lagoon Park in Farmington. He will be speaking about engineering aspects for some of Lagoon s rides, particularly the new ride Wicked and using magnetic technology in roller coasters. Eric Dixon, P.E. KellyMichelle3@hotmail.com 2008 Utah Civil Engineer of the Year & Civil Engineering Educator of the Year Call For Nominations The ASCE Utah Section is searching for outstanding civil engineering professionals to nominate as Engineers of the Year and Engineering Educators of the Year. Engineers of the Year and Engineering Educators of the Year will initially be chosen by their respective Branches, after which the Utah Section will select from among the Branch Engineers of the Year and Branch Engineering Educators of the Year for the 2008 Utah Civil Engineer of the Year and 2008 Utah Civil Engineering Educator of the Year awards. Nominees should be Utah residents, practicing a noteworthy career in a civil engineering capacity in a recognized field of civil engineering within the state of Utah. Candidate nominations will be accepted during the month of October and selected by November 15. To nominate candidates, please provide the contact information of the potential candidate to the ASCE Branch president to which the candidate corresponds. Micheal G. McKamey, P.E. 4 Younger Member Forum The fall P.E. Exam Review is going full steam. There are still two weeks left in the review course and the exam is scheduled for October 26 th, The YMF wishes good luck to everyone that is studying to take the exam. We hope your efforts are rewarded. The YMF will also be holding the annual Halloween Bash on October 19 th, 2007 in Mill Creek Canyon. Just look for the YMF ASCE banner and you will be in the right spot. This is a great time to get free food, play games, make new contacts, carve pumpkins, and most of all get involved. We will also be holding our officer elections at the Bash. Please let others know of the event and encourage them to get involved. Please feel free to contact Cable Murray (801) , if you have any questions regarding officer elections. There are also opportunities for those who would like to help, but not as an officer. This past month we were invited to participate with Brigham Young University Student Chapter in their first ever Homecoming Tailgate Party. The effort put forth by the students was incredible. The display booths, concrete canoe parade float, food, door prizes, auction, and video of last years events were all done very well. The YMF and the student chapter would like to thank those that participated. Next year we hope to get more interaction with the practicing engineers. Cable Murray, P.E.
