1 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION 4-H NEWS SACRAMENTO SAN JOAQUIN SOLANO YOLO APRIL 2009 ISSUE 7 SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITIES EXPANDED Marianne Bird, Academic Coordinator, Central Valley Region Cluster Summer camp. What comes to mind? Group games; friendships cemented around a campfire; singing songs; falling asleep under a canopy of stars. I can think of no better way to foster independence and learn about oneself than at a week away meeting new friends and sharing new experiences. In an effort to expand program opportunities, Central Valley Region Cluster camps will open registration to any youth in our four-county cluster this summer. These 4-H resident camp programs welcome youth 9 to 19 years, and in the 4-H model, are teen-led with adult support and supervision. LAS POSADAS 4-H CAMP June Cost $200 if registered by April 30; $210 if after April 30. Las Posadas is located in Angwin in the mountains above the Napa valley, nestled under tall Douglass Fir and Madrone trees. The camp day is fairly structured with hikes, sports, crafts, skits, nature activities, a swimming pool and evening programs keeping campers busy. Free time is also part of the program mix. Everyone sleeps under the stars. Sponsored by Sacramento County 4-H, Yolo County 4-H members have attended this camp the last several years. Fee includes bus transportation from Sacramento or Davis. For more information see Resident_Camp_-_Las_Pasados.htm. Registration forms are available at your county 4-H office. SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY 4-H CAMP July Cost $180. This year San Joaquin County 4-H Camp takes place at Camp Oakhurst near Bass Lake close to Yosemite. Youth have an opportunity to learn archery, play volleyball, create crafts, swim, hike, canoe, kayak and fish. Camp is fairly unstructured as campers select what they want to do daily. Camper living groups are set by age and gender, and each cabin sleeps 12 (including adults and teen leader). Solano County 4-H members have long-attended San Joaquin s camp program. Cost includes camp picture and t-shirt. Bus transportation, adventure package (ropes course, climbing wall, giant swing), and horseback riding are available for additional fees. For more information see If interested, contact Niki Chiunti at (209) SACRAMENTO COUNTY 4-H MOUNTAIN HORSE CAMP July Cost $150 If you ve got a horse and want to spend the week with your favorite four-legged friend, this is the camp for you. Held at Stone Cellar in the Crystal Basin off Highway 50, campers ride high Sierra trails by day and enjoy games and campfires at night. Campers sleep in small cabins and help to prepare meals in the camp kitchen. This is an advanced riding project and a certain riding level is required. Camp is limited to 28 campers.
