2 OPENING KICKOFF SESSION Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin Dr. Pitre-Martin will bring greetings and an update from the Department of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. Speaker Bio: On March 3, 2016, Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin was named the new Chief Academic and Digital Learning Officer for the Department of Public Instruction. Prior to that, Dr. Pitre-Martin served as Superintendent of Thomasville City Schools. Before working in Thomasville, she served as Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction at the Department of Public Instruction. Dr. Pitre-Martin has served as the Chief Academic Officer for the School District of Philadelphia and also served as an Assistant Superintendent for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana. Dr. Pitre-Martin is a Broad Superintendents Academy Fellow with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University. Dr. Pitre-Martin served as the Director of Research and Staff Development for the Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, Texas and the principal of Oakwood Intermediate School in College Station, Texas. KEYNOTE SESSIONS (Luncheon Speaker) The Pour Into Effect Kyle Greene Speaker Bio: Kyle Greene is a motivational speaker, author, mentor and a coach. Kyle is a motivational speaker that has been speaking all over the southeast spreading his message of love, hope, and purpose to public schools, charter schools, alternative schools, the Deparement of Juvenile Justice, prisons, churches and nonprofit organizations. Kyle believes that everyone has the potential to be great and he wants to help get each person to tap into their greatness. Session Description: Join Kyle Greene as he presents The Pour Into Effect and reminds us that our job affects the outcome of the next generation. Through his personal life story, Kyle creatively weaves together how he became who he is today by teachers, administrators, and coaches that took the time and poured back into him; his potential to be GREAT. One of the most important things that educators can do is to pour into a student s potential and then help show them how to tap into their GREATNESS. At the end of this session Kyle inspires and equips educators with the following takeaways: The keys for teachers to win in the classroom. How and why it is important to understand the voice of your students. The importance of sharing parts of your story with your students. Most students just want to know and feel that you care. 3 CORE SKILLS BUILDING WORKSHOP Tuesday, October 30 th Behavior Interventions that Work Amie Dean Speaker Bio: Amie Dean, M.Ed., B.A. has worked in education for 21 years. She has experience teaching at all levels, and has taught both special and general education. She was with Fulton County Schools (GA) for ten years, four of which she provided support to teachers and students as the Student Support/RTI Coordinator for her middle school. She holds a Masters degree in Education and is Nationally Board Certified as an Exceptional Needs Specialist. With 21 years experience as an educator and 10 years as a professional consultant, Amie has worked with thousands of teachers, counselors and administrators in over 250 districts to improve best practices in behavior support, student engagement, and differentiated instruction. Amie has trained with Dr. Rick DuFour, Dr. Kay Burke, Dr. Spencer Kagan, Dr. Ruby Payne, and many others. Session Description: Do you have a plan for what you will do when a student doesn t comply with your request the first time? Second time? How about the third time? Do you go home tired and exhausted from frustration? She always works to combine research-based instructional best practices and her own classroom experiences with positive humor at every opportunity in her sessions. As a veteran teacher with experiences spanning a variety of grade levels PreK-8, diverse classrooms, and literacy positions in Schools, Kathy fully understands the value of sharing REAL WORLD teaching strategies that are researched-based and that really worked with students in her own classrooms. She strives to support teachers with the overwhelming challenges that teachers and educators face today in preparing students to be College and Career Ready for the more rigorous standards and complex literacy required in today s world. Additionally, she is the original creator of Think Aloud Clouds and hundreds of other engaging hands-on student / teacher literacy tools that she also shares in sessions and in the schools and districts she works with across the country. About the Sessions: Join Kathy as she presents Getting it Together for Successful Instruction and Classroom Management. Being able to implement best instructional practices that ensure that teachers can grow ALL of their students as readers, writers, and deep thinkers who are daily engaging in active collaboration and learning DAILY is crucial. Kathy will be sharing multiple updated really can do ideas, strategies and resources that provide a deeper look into what is proving to really work in today s highly challenging classrooms. Kathy s second session is Writing Instruction that REALLY WORKS in the K-5 Classroom. If you find that many of your students are really good at writing till they have to use paper even on mclass response writing then this session is for you! Participants will walk away with real world ideas and strategies that work with those struggling writers. Moving Your School Forward: How to Move Out of Low Performance Status/Perquimans County Schools Jason Griffin 2017 National Distinguished Principal Speaker Bio: Jason Griffin is a 2017 National Distinguished Principal and the 2017 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year. Mr. Griffin is well known for moving a low performing school to a B school in two years. He is an innovative school leader who understands the importance of collaboration, school culture, and personalizing learning. State Superintendent Mark Johnson recently said, Griffin exemplifies the qualities of leadership essential for helping teachers excel and students to achieve. He delegates to help his teachers grow as leaders themselves and works to provide them with innovative strategies to improve teaching and learning for all students. Griffin joined the faculty at Hertford Grammar School in 2011 as a third-grade teacher, and served as a dean of students before being named principal. About the Sessions: Join Jason as he presents Moving Your School Forward: How to Move Out of Low Performance Status Perquimans County Schools. This session will inspire instructional leaders on how to prioritize and analyze schoolwide data to drive instruction. Hertford Grammar School went from 42.5% to 71.4% in two years and has earned a School Performance Grade of a B for two straight years. Katie Garner Speaker Bio: Katie Garner, M.Ed., author of best-selling book, Secret Stories Cracking the Reading Code with the Brain in Mind, is an internationally known educational speaker, author, and literacy consultant with over twenty years of experience in elementary grade classrooms across the US and Canada, and a passion for infusing neuroscience into literacy and learning. Her backdoor-to-the-brain approach to phonics instruction, via the affective (social-emotional) feeling domain, shifts the paradigms associated with traditional skill mastery, and has gained national recognition with the No Child Left Behind, Reading First, and RTI Initiatives. Kimberli McWhirter and Mia Johnson Speaker Bio: Kimberli McWhirter and Mia Johnson are career educators that have served in a variety of positions providing literacy support to students, teachers and district level administrators. As classroom teachers, literacy coaches and curriculum specialists, they have worked to foster a love of reading and writing across all content areas. Both have carried that excitement for creating life-long learners to their current positions as K-3 Literacy Consultants for the Department of Public Instruction, providing support to the Western (Region 8) and Northwestern (Region 7) Districts of the state. Please join us as we explore strategies for developing yourself as a writer who leads this journey of thinking with a pencil! & Tuesday, October 30 th Engaging Your Students Hands-On in Today s Classroom The Bag Ladies Speaker Bio: The Bag Ladies, Cindy Guinn and Karen Simmons, are teachers in Palm Beach County, Florida. Their passion for teaching enthusiastically with hands-on activities to make the skills come alive, led these two teachers to share and motivate all teachers to create portfolios and projects with their students while teaching skills and strategies. All of the Bag Ladies Projects are cost effective and are designed to promote organizational skills, listening skills, fine motor coordination, and to heighten student motivation, focus, and engagement in the rigorous classrooms of today. Their workshops and presentations take place all over the United States, and they have won numerous acclaim for their love of spreading the good news about teaching to administrators, teachers, and parents. Their humorous, fast-paced workshops are teacher-friendly, creative, motivational, hands-on and fun. They have written four books and have developed 25 units of study designed along with the state standards to bring Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science to life using Hands-On Projects to incorporate the Multiple Intelligences found in every classroom setting. These two teachers take their everyday classroom jobs very seriously, but know that learning needs to be flexible, creative, problem-solving, and fun in this ever-changing educational world.
