2 General Information Course Description: Continuing Education Credits: This program will cover current issues affecting nurses and Nursing Home Administrators caring for patients throughout the continuum of care. A total of 6.50 CEU credit hours will be applied for through the NC Board of Nursing Home Administrators and through North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulations - Adult Care Home Continuing Education Program. An additional 1.5 CEU credit hours for Nursing Home Administrators will available for those attending the post- symposium general session CNE Contact Hours. SEAHEC is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants must attend the entire program in order to receive credit. No partial credit will be given. Target Audience: Nurse Managers, Nursing Home Administrators, RNs, LPNs, and other interested healthcare professionals. Symposium Education Sessions Monday, May 14 8:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. THE ELDER JUSTICE ACT Cindy DePorter, MSSW, NC Division of Health Service Regulation The Elder Justice Act requirement for reporting reasonable suspicion of crime is an issue that every state is trying to implement with little guidance found in the written law. The law requires that nursing facilities receiving at least $10,000 in federal funds in the previous year report this suspicion, within specific time frames, to both law enforcement and the survey agency. The presentation will focus on components of this requirement that interface with the survey process and survey agency, as well as the importance of facility policies and procedures. She will also describe nursing practice errors and the role of nursing regulation in relation to Just Culture. Learning Objectives: Discuss Just Culture concepts. Erin Bonitto, Gemini Consulting You can t go home you live here now! Remember, you have to sit down! You don t want to fall! There s nothing wrong with her she just hollers all the time like that. These phrases are still common in too many elder care settings. Why? Because most expert resources explain what should be included in our dementia care & training programs but don t explain how to sustain dementia care skills in the real world where we often struggle with less-than-ideal staffing levels, budgets, time, and expertise. Using an innovative and do-able approach to dementia communication and dementia education, the presenter will offer proven (& fun!) education tools for dementia education that STICKS. Attendees will learn how ANY nursing team member can be an effective dementia educator, by using tools such as The Post-It Note and The Memory Glue Guy. Additionally, the presenter will help nurses apply and teach simple dementia communication techniques to their co-workers. Finally, the presenter will discuss behavior prevention known make life much less frustrating (and safer) for both residents and their nurses & caregivers. Learning Objectives: Describe how Alzheimer s Disease and related dementias damage the brain. Demonstrate communication skills and scenarios, and activities to be implemented by memory care providers.
