4 First General Assembly 9/15/14 10:00-11:45 a.m. keynote speakers david maraniss Associate Editor, The Washington Post Author of six best-selling books David Maraniss is an associate editor at The Washington Post and the author of six critically-acclaimed, best-selling books about history, politics and sports. His latest book, Barack Obama: The Story, was named a New York Times notable book of the year. Among the most honored writers and journalists of his generation, Maraniss won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his reportage on Bill Clinton; was part of a Post team that won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Virginia Tech tragedy; and has been a Pulitzer finalist twice more for his journalism, and once in history for his Vietnam work, They Marched into Sunlight. His other major books include First in His Class: A Biography of Bill Clinton; Rome 1960: The Summer Olympics that Stirred the World; Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball s Last Hero; and When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. Maraniss, a fellow of the Society of American Historians, was born in Detroit, grew up mostly in Madison, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin. In 2011, Maraniss received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from St. Norbert College. He lives in Washington, D.C. and Madison with his wife, Linda. They have two grown children and four grandchildren. Third General Assembly 9/16/14 2:30-3:45 p.m. dr. richard r. beeman John Welsh Centennial Professor of History Emeritus Department of History, University of Pennsylvania Dr. Richard R. Beeman, the John Welsh Centennial Professor of History Emeritus, has been a member of the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania for 45 years. He is a historian of the American Revolutionary Era, and has written and edited 13 books and several dozen articles on aspects of America s political and constitutional history in the 18th and early 19th centuries. His recent book, Plain Honest Men: The Making of the American Constitution, was the winner of the George Washington Book Prize and the Literary Award of the Philadelphia Athenaeum. His annotated edition of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, The Penguin Guide to the United States Constitution, was published by Penguin Press in August His newest book, Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor: The Forging of American Independence, , was released in May Dr. Beeman has received numerous awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and the Huntington Library. He lives in Media, Pennsylvania with his wife, Mary Cahill, and their golden retriever, Abigail Adams.
