News from Kiwanis Clubs around the District Kiwanis Club of East Huntington The Huntington City Mission held it s first Art for Hope Art Auction at the Renaissance Center on Thursday, October 24 th! Over 150 pieces of beautifully framed artwork was on display. Thomas Kinkade and Rockwell were among the many well known artists that were represented at the event. The Mission needed 100 attendees to ensure a higher percentage of proceeds. They met their goal with 101 attendees! The Mission made over $2,000 from the event. This money will help the Mission continue to sleep, clothe and feed over 130 homeless men, women and children every night! They serve over 100,000 free meals to hungry and homeless every year. They have been helping those less fortunate in our community since The Kiwanis Club of East Huntington pitched in and volunteered at the event. Eight members of the club, including the President Robert Douthat, Past President John Kyle and current Secretary Sherry Kyle helped out as ushers, runners, and covered registration table They worked very hard and helped make the night a huge success! In the picture at right President John Kyle assists the auctioneer in displaying the picture. Kiwanis Club of Martinsburg Jeff Krystofiak, the director of Residential Child Care at the Board of Child Care in Spring Mills will give our club a guided tour of the campus. The Board of Child Care is a human services organization that helps children. Since 1874, they have given children and their families hope for the future. Dinner will be provided by the Board of Child Care before the tour. Manny Arvon, Superintendent of Berkeley County Schools, will be our guest speaker 20 March. Manny will be speaking on the growth of the County and what new schools are planned to keep up with the growth.. This is a program that was postponed last month. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at Katara s Deli, 1615 Winchester Ave. Kiwanis Club of Keyser The club assisted in a local blood drive. The club provided after school snacks, tutoring and recreation plus dinner to grades 3 and 4 at the local elementary school. The club helped pack over 1,000 shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse. Kiwanis Club of Welch Several members assisted the staff at the elementary school to dismantle props for storage. 3

News from Kiwanis Clubs around the District Kiwanis Club of Elkins The club ran the corn dog wagon at the Mountain State Forest Festival. The club raised $16,800 from the sale of corn dogs, French fries and drinks during the Forest Festival. Kiwanis Club of Weirton The club participates in the Mario Pipinos Head Start program. The members collected clothing (gloves, hats, scarfs, socks etc.) and collected a $50.00 cash donation for the facility. In December, the members volunteered by ringing bells for the Salvation Army on three different days. The club also helped the Weirton Aktion Club with their candle fundraising project. They helped sell and deliver candles. Kiwanis Club of Huntington We had Kevin Brady as a speaker. As Executive Director of the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District, he defines his job as preserving and modernizing the more than 1,400 acres of park land. Ritter Park is the flagship of the park system and in 2013 it was named one of the ten best public spaces in America. The park restrooms need to be replaced and the tennis facilities with its bubble needs to be handled. The Field House property was recently sold to Marshall after the leaking roof made it too expensive to maintain. A new Veterans Memorial Park has been built behind the soccer field to honor the original dedication of the property to the memory of all veterans. A new section of the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health has recently been completed through the Harris Riverfront Park. Major changes are in store for the amphitheater at Riverfront Park. Additional renovations have been made at Rotary Park where several playgrounds have been built as well as three disc golf courses and bike trails. The Park District also manages three cemeteries including Springhill Cemetery where the Field of Flags is displayed each September. Recently the Park District hired a new Activities Director, Brian Danford, who will be adding lots of new fun activities to the park board calendar. For additional information, visit ghprd.org. Our speaker last week was Wanda Wilson of Adams Avenue Floral. She is a local businesswoman. Since 1991, she is proud of her ability to work with her customers. She will create any type of arrangement that one would like. She gets her supplies locally from Nitro, Spurlock s Wholesale, and from Columbus. She advised us that we will get more value and fresher flowers by ordering from a local florist rather than from an 800 number or the Internet. Ask for something similar to a display in an ad. Arrangements can be made with real flowers or silk ones. She also reminded us that funerals always need a certain number of flowers for use to cover the grave. You can always send flowers even when a no flowers request shows up in the obituary. Valentine s Day and Mother s Day are the busiest times and it is best to order early. Our speaker this week was Officer Kyle Patten from the HPD K-nine unit. The unit currently has 8 dogs and 7 handlers. The dogs are trained for narcotics, tracking, and apprehension. Officer Patten's dog, Nero, is a beautiful Shepherd who is 6 1/2 years old and will retire in 6 months. They use foreign languages to train the dogs and Nero's favorite treat is a tennis ball. Nero is a narcotics dog so he will be used to check the cars, lockers, & backpacks at the schools. Sometimes Officer Patten brings him down to the bus terminal first thing in the morning to check out the arriving bus. The dogs will work faster than humans at clearing a building. Obedience is stressed at all stages of the training. 4

News from Kiwanis Clubs around the District Kiwanis Club of Huntington 2/25/14: Last week s meeting was spent in committee discussion primarily related to our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. The Dinner will be held April 4 at FUMC. Prep work will be done on Wednesday, April 2. Responsibilities are being assigned now so talk to Tom Hanshaw to see what you can do to help. Be sure to schedule some time off work for at least one of the days. Tickets are available from Denise Pittenger. Remember: our success is based on tickets sold not the number of lunches served. Selling tickets is the most important role we have. You are not asking for donations, you are offering them the best spaghetti dinner available for their money! What a great way for a business to say Thank You to their employees! This week we will be celebrating with Patti Nelson as she retires as Director of the KDCC. Be sure to be there to thank her for her many years of excellent service to the children of Huntington. Hopefully we will then see her joining us for lunch during her retirement. Brenda Sutphin, incoming Director of the KDCC, will also be joining us for lunch. Kiwanis Club of Charles Town 2/20/14: The WV Kiwanis Governor Sherry Charles will be visiting Division 6 on Thursday 13 March. The banquet will start promptly at 6 PM and will be held at Shepherd University's Ballroom above the Student Center (Ram's Den). The cost of the banquet meal will be $20 and will consist of a tossed salad, herbroasted chicken, roast pork loin, green bean Almandine, Yukon gold and sweet potato au gratin, glazed baby carrots, and assorted fruit pies and cake. Also included are rolls or corn muffins, tea, water, and coffee. PLEASE let Jill Nau know if you wish to attend no later than 7 March.. We had the President, Vice President, and Secretary from the Washington High School Key Club at our meeting to give status of the club. They discussed that the Jefferson County School Superintendent has cancelled all field trips till after Westest, so the club will not be able to attend the district convention. The Fashion Show has been rescheduled till 2 March. Half the proceeds will go to the junior class for prom and half will go to Key Club. They have chosen to donate theirs to the Jefferson County Animal Shelter. The club will hold officer elections their first meeting in March for next year s club. Saturday, February 22, 2014 Eliminate Project Update Thanks a million. Literally. Thanks to one generous Kiwanis member, The Eliminate Project is US$1 million closer to reaching its US$110 million goal and protecting the connection between millions of mothers and babies. The US$1 million gift combined with the efforts of Kiwanis-family members around the world brings total funds raised for The Eliminate Project to US$48.2 million in cash and pledges as of February 16, These funds help UNICEF implement immunization campaigns. In fact, UNICEF plans to reach million women with immunization activities in 2014 and Other countries are also developing plans, which can be implemented once more funds are received. Immunization activities eventually lead to data review, prevalidation and validation surveys and confirmation of MNT elimination. Several countries have progressed in the process. Madagascar hopes to conduct a validation survey in 2014 while the Philippines, Cambodia and India are reviewing data to determine their readiness. 5

News from Kiwanis Clubs around the District Kiwanis Club of Shepherdstown We are pleased to welcome a new member to our club -- Hunter Cutlip of Clarksburg, WV. He is a former Key Clubber and is now a student at Shepherd University. Welcome, Hunter! Officer Jim Cummings of the Shepherdstown Police Department was at our meeting recently to accept our donation of stuffed animals and he was very pleased. Our K-Kids brought in an additional 45 stuffed animals. Advisor Kim Walls is pictured with the K-Kids and some of the stuffed animals. If you have any more, please bring them on Wednesday. We'll be working on our May 9 auction preparation. Please think about what part YOU can play to make this our best ever. It takes the ENTIRE club to be successful. We'll also discuss Kiwanis One Day and other upcoming activities. Club president and WV District Secretary, Bernie Knott, traveled to Indianapolis to attend the District Secretaries' meeting and the SLP conference in January. It was a very productive trip. Many members of our club are active in their church communities and provide service to their fellow members, teach classes, and attend to the physical needs of the church properties. President Bernard Knott provided information about our club becoming a Model Club for the Eliminate Project. That means that we would pledge to give $750 per member over the next five years. We can include the $6, we have already given (by the club and by individuals). Doug Fargo and the Knotts' have made commitments. We already have money in our budget for Eliminate. Margaret Walker agreed to pump up the effort with our chili and cornbread raffle table. The Kiwanis One Day car wash funds can be added. Other members are encouraged to make donations through the club so that the club gets credit. Calvin Whittington made a motion that we commit to being a Model Club; Karl wolf seconded the motion; and it carried. The total goal of the project is to raise $110 million in cash and pledges by June 2015, the 100 th anniversary of Kiwanis. Kiwanis Club of Weirton Liberty Elementary School selected 22 students for awards of in the Terrific Kids program. One of our members, Angie Goettel, spent 26 hours volunteering for the elderly. ie; nursing home visits, errands, grocery; store, doctors etc. Kiwanis Club of West Charleston Our club cooks and serves both lunch and dinner one time during the month at a homeless shelter in Charleston. We served 52 for lunch and 45 for dinner. There were also 5 children served. Club members donate money at each week s meeting to be given to Eliminate Project. 6

100 Years of Service The excitement is building for Detroit No. 1 Club members. In 2015, Kiwanis' founding club plans to celebrate 100 years of service to the Detroit community and the world. Kiwanis has made a difference in the lives of millions since 1914, when Allen S. Browne and Joseph G. Prance met in Detroit to plan the formation of an organization that would eventually become Kiwanis. Today the original club serves the children of the world. Its signature project, "Books for Kids," has distributed more than 1.5 million books over the past 12 years. More than 100 classes of third-grade students received dictionaries through the Kiwanis Dictionary Program. In addition, Detroit No. 1 is a Model Club for The Eliminate project, supports Children's Hospitals with proceeds from Kiwanis Peanut Day fundraisers, and provides financial aid for needy young people to attend summer camp. Together, the Salvation Army and the Detroit No. 1 Club have prepared and served food to the homeless, and many Kiwanians have helped their Salvation Army partner with its annual holiday bell ringing. The Kiwanis-sponsored Aktion Club and the Circle K Club are active in fundraising and charity work, too. Detroit No. 1 is proud to host Kiwanis' 100th anniversary party on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the Detroit Renaissance Marriott Hotel. Along with Kiwanis International, the Michigan District is helping to prepare for this historic gathering. Many activities are planned, including a "Books for Kids" service project. Join us in Detroit to celebrate a century of Kiwanis service and help launch Kiwanis into the next century. Creative Ways to Celebrate The number 100 and multiples of 100: 100 children served, 100 canned goods collected, 100 winter coats collected, 100 games donated to a school, etc. Platinum projects and the metal s properties (resistance to wear, tarnish, corrosion). Achievements by your club and how you could tie in your club s history. Achievements by your district and how you could tie in your district s history at the club level, in cooperation with other clubs. Service Leadership Programs and how youth programs represent the future, supported by your Kiwanis club. Tying in The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis anniversary gift to the world. How? By becoming a 100 Baby Member for the West Virginia Eliminate Project What is the 100 Baby Project? Any club, any SLP, any individual can be recognized by the West Virginia District as a 100 Baby Member by donating $180 to the Eliminate Project. We will run the program until at least June 27, More information will follow from Eliminate Coordinator Dr. Ray Richardson of the Fairmont Club. Wouldn t it be wonderful for every club, every SLP, and every member of the West Virginia District to be at least a 100 Baby Member? 9
