4 News and notes from around the District Kiwanis Club of Suncrest : Young children in Morgantown s Jerome Park neighborhood now have playground equipment to enjoy, thanks to fundraising efforts by the Suncrest Area Kiwanis Club. We selected the Jerome Park neighborhood because the local park had nothing for young children, said Christopher Harnett, Suncrest Club president. He commended member Kevin Dean for spearheading the playground project. The new facility is located on ground that included a former elementary school playground. That playground was lost when the school building was turned into apartments. The Kiwanians raised $25,000 through fundraisers, donations and grants, including a $15,000 contribution from the Morgantown Kiwanis Club Foundation. Kiwanians joined forces with the Jerome Park Neighborhood Association and the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners (BOPARC) to plan the playground. About 70 people attended the Nov. 8, 2014, dedication ceremony, which featured remarks by city council members, other local government officials and representatives of all groups involved. Messages were read from Senator Joe Manchin, Senator Jay Rockefeller and Representative David McKinley. Neighborhood children cut the ribbon to open the playground. The event was covered by a local television station and newspaper. BOPARC owns the playground, and its employees assembled the Landscape Structures equipment. Leaders expect the playground equipment to get quite a workout during the summer and fall. Photo captions: Neighborhood children cut the ribbon during the dedication of the Jerome Park playground equipment donated by the Suncrest Area Kiwanis Club in Morgantown. Neighborhood children began enjoying the playground as soon as it was dedicated. 4

The club, which is just completing its first year, voted to give two $1,000 scholarships this spring to 2 senior Key Club members from Williamstown High School. Lois Meadows, club builder said that this is quite a large donation for this new club and she is very proud of the dedicated members who have worked on fundraising events this year to make these scholarships possible. Williamstown members are also working on plans to continue their Kiwanis Family Flower project this year. Last year, the city of Williamstown gave them an area in Armstrong Park to allow each of the service clubs as well as the Kiwanis Club to plant flowers. A sign has already been made to place in the flower garden designating it the Kiwanis Family Flower Garden. The Williamstown Club is very appreciative of their two business partners who have been supportive of their efforts this year. Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg- April 18, 2015: The club marked the 35th Annual Parkersburg Fishing Derby. Roger Emerick, of the former Kiwanis Club of Fort Neal, a current member of the Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg, along with two other former Kiwanians worked the Derby as part of Kiwanis One Day. 6 Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg continued: paid her with 200 NEW uncirculated West Virginia quarters!!! Our best customer so far has been our own Kevin Dean who purchased 40 to give as gifts as he travels often for KI! To order ornaments, contact Lois Meadows at (304) or her at We plan to sell them as long as the Tech crew can make them. The Meadows' have purchased the wood and other materials for the ornaments so far. The goal is to raise $5000 for ELIMI- NATE...and more... Emerson K-Kids, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg are gearing up for their COPPER TOP- PER COMPETITION! Lois Meadows, club mentor, began this project in 2001 to help raise funds for a school walking trail. It is a penny war held for one week where each class is in competition with the others. Pennies count FOR the class but SILVER coins count against...the K-Kids have raised funds for the walking trail, playground equipment, basketball courts, a new sound system, and are now helping raise funds for paving the parking lot. To find out how to hold this fun event, contact Lois meadows@suddenlink.net. They have raised as much as $3000 in a week. Last year they gave $1500 to ELIMINATE, but gave credit to the Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg instead of their own club. Neale Elementary K-Kids have been busy with several projects this year. At Christmas they visited a nearby personal care facility where they visited residents and took them home-made cards. Each year, they visit the Humane Society where they donate items needed for the animals. Susie Starcher, club mentor from the Kiwanis Club of North Parkersburg, attends meetings and helps with their projects. The K-Kids' Club of Martin Elementary School got some needed help as a Kiwanis One Day project from sponsoring North Parkersburg club members. On April 18, while some members worked at ball games and other members worked at the fishing derby, some members worked with students at Martin to clean out flower beds and get things ready for spring. The school principal, Karen Brady, and the K-Kids' advisor, Kelli Holmes, are members of the North Parkersburg Club. Their club has been helped since it was chartered by sending "B" bucks to them to help them purchase books for the library. This year, they are using the "B" bucks to donate to the cancer society. They lost their music teacher this year due to cancer. Ray Pyles, the publicity chair for the North Parkersburg sponsoring club spoke, to several of the K-Kids as they worked that day. He said he was very impressed by their comments and their desire to give service to others and to their school. Since they were in need of books for their library and for their book walks, 100's of new books have been donated to the school by 2 members of the North Parkersburg Kiwanis club. North Parkersburg is proud to be able to sponsor three K-Kid Clubs, four Builders Clubs, and two Key Clubs in Parkersburg. White House, Kiwanis members to discuss ways to improve communities WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 29, 2015) Kiwanis Club of Huntington, WV, will be ONE OF 34 clubs at the White House this week as Kiwanis International participates in a Community Leader Briefing to discuss the issues impacting communities. The Community Leader Briefing is a unique opportunity for grassroots leaders to come to Washington and further the conversation between White House officials and those in the community. The Kiwanis Club of Huntington, WV was selected to participate because the club has been effective at improving communities through a signature service project. This signature service project is the Kiwanis Day Care Center and has been recognized as the oldest continuously operating daycare in the State of West Virginia. Club members attending the Community Leader Briefing was: John Grigsby, Club President This is a great opportunity for the Kiwanis Club of Huntington to share the story of our work with the Kiwanis Day Care Center and demonstrates how we have made a difference in our community. We hope to inspire other Kiwanis Clubs and their members to do the same, said Denise Pittenger, Public Relations Chairperson for the Kiwanis Club of Huntington. Each of the more than 16,000 Kiwanis family clubs assesses the needs of its community and finds the best way to make a difference. Some of the projects include reading to children, organizing the local sports league and making pediatric patients hospital stays better. For 100 years, the members of Kiwanis International have devoted themselves to creating a better world for children, said Kiwanis International Dr. John R. Button. Kiwanis clubs remain vibrant and viable today, providing service that helps children develop into strong, healthy adults. Our communities needs demonstrate that Kiwanis is as important today as it was when the first Kiwanis club started its service. Founded in Detroit, Michigan. in January 1915, Kiwanis began as a businessman s networking club. The organization quickly adopted community service as a goal, with children as the beneficiary. That first Kiwanis club, still active today, evolved into a global service organization with nearly 630,000 adult and youth members in16,000-plus clubs in more than 80 nations. Kiwanis club members donate more than 18 million hours of service every year to strengthen their communities. 9

10 Love it. By Blake Williams Formula Chair for WV I went to Chicago for the Formula. Wow! I found a renewed spirit about opening Kiwanis clubs and strengthening our current ones. Why did you become a Kiwanian? Was your father or grandfather a Kiwanian? Did you see the impact that your club had in your local schools? Did you visit a Kiwanis park or pancake breakfast and want to learn more? What do you enjoy about your experience? Why do you remain committed to serving the children of the world? What would make your experience better? What are your club's aspirations and what would it take to reach them? Do you need to think about trying some new fundraisers? Is there an unmet service need in your community that even more hearts and hands working together could solve? How could you help make your community an even better place? "Love it" addresses the fact that Kiwanians have unique reasons why they became and remain members. It asks members to draw from what they love about Kiwanis to talk about Kiwanis with others. The Love it concept also applies to clubs that need resources to address challenges and opportunities to ensure the club experience is the best possible to ensure they can, indeed, love their club. This is a win for members and for the communities the club serves. The Formula picks up its Love it component from the early I Love My Club campaign, which will be continued throughout the initiative. This is The Formula: Love being a Kiwanian. Love your club. Share it with others. Live it. #1000 Members Strong WV Kiwanis is doing well to add members. I encourage you to reach out to clubs to ensure that membership applications are on hand and the process is clear to add a new member. This is part of our strengthening formula. A key responsibility of a Formula team member is to clarify Kiwanis processes. Congrats to our 22 clubs who have added members...those superstar clubs who have added over 5 members are --Kiwanis Club of Charles Town --Charleston Young Professionals Kiwanis Club --Kiwanis Club of West Charleston --Kiwanis Club of Weirton Vision Tip: Write down #1000 on a place you see everyday. This #1000 reminder will focus your "K" forward to 1000 members for WV Kiwanis. #keeponkeepingon Current membership stands at 937. This is 63 short of 1,000. Which is short 163 to maintain 1,000 members at the October deadline. We have a lot of work to do. We must do this to not only show KI as a whole what we are made of, but to maintain our pride in being an independent state District! 10

11 Kiwanis Club of Mannington May 2015: North Marion High School Key Club- Sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Mannington: Four of our Key Club members graduated this year and because of their service to their Club and the community, they were awarded by the Kiwanis Club of Mannington with a Key Club service award.
