He is president of The Paramedic Foundation and the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Research in EMS. He also chairs the board of the EMS Officer Credentialing Commission. List current trends in the early management of critically ill or injured patients. 2. Discuss care and treatment modalities of critically ill or injured patients. John Salka (ret.) served with the FDNY for more than 33 years, the past 15 years as a battalion chief in the 18th Battalion in the Bronx. Prior to being promoted to battalion chief, Chief Salka was assigned as the Captain of 48 Engine in the Bronx. He is a New York State certified instructor and lectures nationally. He is a seminar presenter and has presented at the Firehouse Expo in Baltimore, the FDIC in Indianapolis, the NY State Association of Fire Chiefs and many other venues. John is the author of the best-selling books First In Last Out Leadership Lessons from the New York Fire Department and The Engine Company. He received the 2001 FDIC Training Achievement Award for his Get Out Alive firefighter survival training program and travels extensively training firefighters throughout the 50 states and Canada in tactics, strategy, leadership and safety & survival. Chief Salka has also served as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. 2 3
3 keynote presenters Ronald I. Gross, MD, FACS Dr. Ronald I. Gross is the Chief, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Gross completed medical school at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in New York, NY and his general surgery residency at Bellevue Medical Center, NYU School of Medicine. During his surgical residency he was a fellow with the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory and completed his residency as the Chief Resident in Surgery. Dr. Gross served in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps where he held the rank of Colonel and was the Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgical Services for the 405th Combat Support Hospital, and Deputy Commander, Clinical Services of the 912th Forward Surgical Team during his deployment to Iraq in He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and holds memberships in the American Association of the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), and the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). He is a member of the national American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, a member of the Massachusetts State COT, and a voting member of the Massachusetts State Trauma Committee. He has served as the Vice-Chair and Chair of the Connecticut State DOT, and is a site reviewer for the ACS COT Verification Review Committee. Dr. Gross was one of the surgeons chosen for the AAST Distinguished Visiting Surgeon Program at the U.S. Army Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany in 2010, 2011, and He was the recipient of the Evening to Honor Excellence High School Scholarship Foundation Award of Fairfield in 2004, received Public Service Award from the Southwest Emergency Services Council in 2003, and in 2000 he received the Millennium Commitment Award from the ACS Committee on Trauma. He is a decorated combat veteran, and in 2004 he was the recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit, an honor given to those individuals who have clearly demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character, displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence, served in the Army Medical Department (for a minimum of 10 years) with selflessness, and have made a sustained contribution to the betterment of Army Medicine. Dr. Gross has authored and co-authored numerous peer reviewed publications and book chapters on numerous trauma topics including emergency airway management, blunt hepatic trauma, transthoracic lung herniation in blunt trauma, morbid obesity in surgery and trauma, and public health-related issues in trauma. He is one of the original authors of several ACS educational offerings, including the Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) Course, the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) Course, and the Disaster Management & Emergency Preparedness (DMEP) Course, and is national faculty for all three courses. Anahi M. Ortiz, MD Dr. Anahi Ortiz was born in New York, New York. She graduated from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, a six year BS/MD program, at City College of New York. she then received her medical degree from Downstate Medical College in Brooklyn. Dr. Ortiz decided on pediatrics as her focus and did her residency at St. Luke s - Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. After her residency, her career has focused on providing care to the underserved communities of New York City and eventually those in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Ortiz moved to the central Ohio area in 1996 where she has worked as a pediatrician at Nationwide Children s Hospital, Westside Community Health Center, and North Community Counseling. She has always been a proponent of volunteering in the community and currently volunteers at Helping Hands Free Clinic as well as volunteering internationally with Timmy Global Health Care. Dr. Ortiz was appointed to the office of Franklin County Coroner in November of Since then she has worked towards streamlining the process for more timely completion of death certificates, has had several forms professionally interpreted for families of decedents whose primary language is not English, and is working on educating the medical community on completing death certificates. In addition, Dr. Ortiz is currently on the Franklin County Suicide Workgroup, which is looking at suicide in the Franklin County and attempting to decrease the rate of suicide here. In March of 2015, Dr. Ortiz instituted the Franklin County Drug Overdose Initiative. This group meets monthly to look at the rising rate of drug use and deaths in Franklin County (or Central Ohio) and how we can intervene. In a short period of time, several members of the group have developed concrete plans to create programs which will decrease the number of deaths from overdoses. Dr. Anahi Ortiz has almost 30 years experience in working with high risk communities in the medical field. She brings this experience and knowledge to the Franklin County Coroner s Office where she will be a voice for those who die of violent means and help improve the lives of our community. 4 5
