2 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS REGISTRATION EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FORUM Presents... The American Fire Culture & Fireground Wake-Up The American Fire Culture Dr. Clark s The American Fire Culture is a manual fire protection model based on six underlying assumptions, or DNA genes: fast, close, wet, risk, injury and death. To survive in the 21st century, fire service leadership must change our cultural paradigm to automatic fire protection that does not accept fire loss. This session will help you develop strategies to address key issues in reducing the number of firefighter and civilian fire deaths. Firefighter & Fire Officer Fireground Survival Additionally, Chief Billy Goldfeder will present, through video, audio and "WAKE UP" lecture, an in-depth program featuring specific and very recent fireground events. The presentation will have a strong focus on DWELLING & SMALL COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRES that ended with tragic results. This very personal, high-energy direct and frank command, operations and tactics program (updated regularly to assure timeliness), will provide the Firefighters and Fire Officers an excellent opportunity to apply the LESSONS LEARNED to their own departments and themselves. 4 APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR INTEGRATED EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COURSES FEMA s Emergency Management Institute conducts Integrated Emergency Management Courses (IEMC's) throughout the year and across the country. The 4 1/2 day training course is designed specifically for communities, providing both lecture and exercise-based training focused on response operations for a disaster or emergency that could happen in their area. IEMC's courses simulate realistic crisis situations that emergency operations center personnel and community leadership/elected officials may encounter during disasters or other events. Also, the course enhances the skills of participating officials and provides a forum to evaluate the effectiveness of their specific emergency policies, plans, and procedures to protect life and property. The course s target audience includes: state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government personnel; their SLTT elected and appointed officials; supervisory, operations, and emergency support personnel; nonprofit organizations; the private sector; law enforcement personnel; firefighters; attorneys; public information officers; planners; and more. IEMC classes are principally delivered at FEMA s EMI at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland; however, delivery may also occur in the community. If your jurisdiction is interested in applying for the program and obtaining information on the application process and its timeline, please visit The deadline for applications is February 15, Questions should be directed to FEMA-EMI-IEMB@fema.dhs.gov KEEP THEM CLEAR... Every year in the northern parts of the United States, fire and emergency service personnel are challenged by mother nature s elements. Taking the time now to keep them clear is a simple safety reminder to keep your fire hydrants clear of all types od debris just in the event you need them! Safety First! TRAIN as if your life depends on it! 4

6 WHY CREDENTIALING MATTERS... OHIO FIRE CHIEF CREDENTIALING The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association (OFCA) and the Ohio Fire & Emergency Services Foundation (OF&ESF) have identified the need to further enhance the professionalism of chief fire officers throughout the state of Ohio by the establishment of a uniform credentialing program. The goal of the program is to ensure a strong degree of accountability. The Credentialing Program sets forth the goals needed for chief fire officers to establish a higher degree of professionalism so that fire chiefs may be better prepared to serve their department, their community, and other organizations. The goal is to promote the professional development of the chief fire officer in Ohio and to assist these chiefs in their daily operations, management, and leadership. Credentialed participants will be required to renew their credentials every three years. Through this program, the OFCA has attempted to establish occupational education, fire service related training, and experience criteria relevant to the position of fire chief. This process provides an equal opportunity for the volunteer, paid-on-call, or full-time applicant to meet the minimum criteria for achieving the Ohio Fire Chief credential. At this time, the chief fire officer designation is open to officers serving at the Battalion Chief level or above. Candidates are required to provide an organizational chart verifying their position within the department. By participation in this program, an applicant agrees to abide by a Mission Statement and Code of Professional Conduct. The credentialing process will be solely administered by The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association Credentialing Committee. The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association (OFCA) and the Ohio Fire & Emergency Services Foundation (OF&ESF) have identified the need to further enhance the professionalism of chief fire officers throughout the State of Ohio by the establishment of a uniform Fire Officer credentialing program.
