1 Serving the campus since 1977 July 03, 2012 Con-graduations! South Seattle Community College s Class of 2012 celebrated their accomplishments Tuesday, June 19, at Benaroya Hall. This year, 930 degrees and certificates were awarded, including 376 in academic transfer, 387 in professional/technical studies and multi-occupational trades, and 32 students in the four-year Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Hospitality Management degree program. The graduating class also included 24 new Registered Nurses and 22 dualgraduate Running Start students, who concurrently received a college AA degree and high school diploma. 2 Page 2 South Staff Stuff Staff Changes New Staff! William Brucher Labor Educator, Georgetown Campus Will graduated from Brown University with a PhD in history. He has an extensive teaching background as well as several years of experience in the labor movement. Ngoc Chung Program Coordinator, Enrollment Services A native of Vietnam, Ngoc relocated to Seattle in She graduated from South and went on to earn a BA in accounting from Central Washington University at the Highline campus. She has worked in South s financial aid office as an office assistant for the past five years. Terry Paull Professional/Technical Educational Planner AANAPISI Grant & Advising Terry comes to South from the College Success Foundation, where he served as a liaison and support resource for Achiever Scholar students attending college. He earned his AA degree at Everett Community College, a BA in history and Master of Education in student personnel administration from Western Washington University. Jason Petrait Program Coordinator, Georgetown Campus A Seattle native, Jason graduated from the UW with a BA in English and, most recently, managed front of house operations at the Pacific Northwest Ballet. John Toutonghi Mathematics Instructor John earned an MS in mathematics from the UW and a BS in mathematics from Seattle University. He has been a tenured math instructor at East Los Angeles College in California, and also taught full-time at Seattle University and part-time at Seattle Central, North Seattle and Highline Community Colleges. Donna Miller-Parker Vice President for Instruction Donna s background at South is extensive, and includes leadership positions as interim VPI and dean for Basic & Transitional Studies, a position she assumed in Her 30 years experience in adult basic skills education encompasses instruction, curriculum and professional development, program creation and implementation, and policy setting at the regional, state, and local levels. She earned a master's degree in adult education from Seattle University, and a BA degree in English from Idaho State University. Rochelle Fonoti Pacific Islander Cultural Specialist, AANAPISI Grant Rochelle has served the most recent AANAPISI grant in numerous capacities working with the Pacific Islander community, and has also taught anthropology at South and the UW. She developed our District s first course focusing on Pacific Islanders. She earned her MA in sociocultural anthropology at the UW, and is completing her PhD in that same area. Laura Kingston Associate Dean for Academic Programs Laura has held the associate dean position on an interim basis since November, She has taught at community colleges in Massachusetts and Washington, and was tenured at South in She was the first Teaching and Learning Center associate, piloting a new model for supporting faculty s use of educational technology. Laura has an MA in English composition from Western Washington University, and a BA in English from Pacific Lutheran University. Kim Llewelyn Mathematics Instructor Kim has an MEd in adult education from Western Washington University and a BS in physics from the UW. She has taught math part-time at South since 1999, and has been the Title III co-lead for the math area for two years, where she has been instrumental in developing the Math & Learning Lab (MALL).

3 Page 3 South Staff Stuff More Staff Changes Enrollment Service Team Christian Garanlund Intake Specialist, Title III, Student Services Chris began his career at South in 2012, as a cultural associate in Student Outreach, Admissions & Recruitment (SOAR). He also worked as part of the AANAPISI project team. Chris holds a BA in comparative ethnic studies, as well as a BA in sports management from the UW. Chanda Ishisaka Transfer Educational Planner AANAPISI Grant & Advising Chanda joined South in 2010, focusing on the financial literacy component of the AANAPISI grant. Most recently, she has been working under Title III in small group advising efforts, including Pre-Advising Workshops (PAWs). Chanda holds a Master of Education in student development administration from Seattle University, and a BA from the University of California, Irvine. New College Council Representatives! The newly-elected representatives to the College Council are: Debi Gary for Classified Staff, Laura Matson, Exempt Staff and Regina Daigneault and Ryan Dorman, Faculty. The College Council is responsible for advising the President s Cabinet on policy proposals that affect any member of the South community. The College Council hosts yearly budget hearings and sends budget recommendations to the President. Greg Dempsey Jr, the new Associate Dean of Enrollment Services, supplied the list below as a helpful guide to the ultra-important Enrollment Services Team. South has contracted with Consolidated Food Management, Inc. (CFM) an experienced provider of food services, to operate Bernie s. Some things won t change however. The name will remain Bernie s Pastry Shop after Bernie Brotman, whose family has been a longtime supporter of South. And of course the pastries will still be produced by our fantastic Pastry program students. Alhadeff Menu, Summer 2012 The Alki Café is closed for the summer, but the Grill is open 11 am-12:50 pm for lunch. Walk- ins are welcome, but to ensure a table, you can make reservations by calling Reservations are required for the Connoisseur Lunches. The Grill also takes To Go orders! To schedule an appointment, call (206) Another Successful Drive! The May 17 blood drive in honor of César Chavez had a total of 61 donors. The blood collected will save or dramatically improve the lives of 144 Puget Sound area patients. Seven of the donors self-identified themselves as having Hispanic ethnicity/origin which is the highest number at a César Chavez Seattle drive.thanks to Jenny Nguyen, USA Community Service Officer, and Ronald Lopez, MEChA president and of course, Monica Lundberg. Posting & Publicity Policy If you are: Receive Permission From: Student Life/D&R staff Student Life - JMB 135 Faculty/Campus Department PIO RSB 154 Community Member PIO RSB 154 Georgetown Pathway The Georgetown Campus was awarded a 14-month, $200,000 grant to implement a Pathway Through Apprenticeship initiative. The project is one of just three funded statewide, and focuses on entry-level employees with low math skills and no GED. The training will prepare them to enter or complete the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) apprentice program. A second component focuses on current first- and second-year apprentices interested in pursuing a college degree. This project is a partnership between the Georgetown Campus, AJAC, Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD), the Council on Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM&AW). Higher One Starting summer quarter, students will have new options of accessing financial aid and scholarship funds through our new partnership with Higher One. With the Seattle Colleges Card, the choices are: Easy Refund deposit to the OneAccount, a no monthly fee checking account the quickest way to access funds. Let s Do Lunch The Let s Do Lunch program that offers students the opportunity to invite a faculty member to lunch on campus has been a huge success with 50 faculty members participating. The program will resume Fall quarter. Thanks to Monica Lundberg and staff. Vending Machine Refund Procedure If you need a CASH refund, please go to the Cashier s Office in the Robert Smith Building between the hours of 9 am - 4 pm, Monday through Friday. This is for cash transactions only. We do not allow cash refunds which exceed $5, since the machines accept $1 or $5 bills, but not $10 or $20 bills. All disputes for card transactions must be sent to cashlessvending@advantagevending.com so we may verify the transaction from our cashless processing website District Catalogue is Online The Seattle Community Colleges Catalog is online and May be viewed on the District website.

6 Page 6 Pedal On! Team Vicious Cycles Seventeen employees and 4 students participated in team activities related to National Bike to Work month. Team Vicious Cycles clocked in 59 round trips but Team Fibonacci logged the most mileage, The tiebreaker went to Team Vicious Cycles with the highest team commute rate. The teams together pedaled an impressive 1, miles! Individual honors went to MVP Mike Steffancin of Team Fibonacci for most miles, Mike also clocked in the most round trips at 17, and the best commute rate of 85%. Seven bikers met their personal round trip and mileage goals. Note: Team Fibonacci is named after the mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci who figured out an indefinite sequence of numbers in which each number is the sum of the previous two predecessors. Chopsticks now in the Cafeteria The United Student Association together with Chef Scribner (pictured with South s former USA president, Dante Obcena) surveyed students during API Heritage week and discovered there was a need for chopsticks in the cafeteria. They even asked what color they would prefer! The choice was green and they are available now.

7 Page 7 Hydroplane Make-over Automotive Collision Repair students were given the opportunity to completely make-over part of Seattle history. While the students were stripping off old paint, applying new color and graphics, students in Heavy Duty Diesel and Automotive Technology were performing major maintenance on the truck that will eventually tow the Hydro across the U.S. during the racing season. The boat is owned by Billy Schumacher ( Billy the Kid ) the former unlimited champion driver. Schumacher Racing paid a shop fee and materials costs for the student project. The Miss Beacon Plumbing boasts the South Seattle Community College name and logo on its sides. It will be competing throughout the US this season, including the Seafair Unlimited Hydroplane race in August. Let s cheer for our hydro!

16 Page 16 News from Web Manager Jason Gruenwald Rochelle Tuitagava'a Fonoti with two colleagues at the 18th Annual Gala Awards Dinner for the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APIACS). Rochelle was one of the 29 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) community leaders from across the country who convened May 6-9 in Washington D.C., as the first national consortium of NHPI community organizations. President Barack Obama addressed the group as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month. Locally, Rochelle, along with Director of Diversity & Retention Ricardo Leyva-Puebla, API study group English tutor Lynette Finau and Pacific Islander Student Commissioner, Sui Ioane, presented a panel, "Flowing with the Currents: Advocating Student Success for Pacific Islander Students at South Seattle Community College," at the 11th Annual Symposium of Native & Indigenous Scholarship, held May 4 at the University of Washington. May 11 Campus Security was called to the Campus Service offices to investigate a burglary. Multiple spools of copper wire valued at several hundred dollars had been stolen.

17 Page 17 CAmPus Security Reports May 3 Security was called to a classroom to investigate the reported harassment of a student. The student reported she was being harassed by a classmate and felt unsafe. The student met with staff and faculty to discuss the situation. She was given information on security measures and the security phone numbers. May 7 A student s wallet was stolen in March and was eventually found in the backyard of the suspect s host family s home. The wallet contained cash, I.D., and a bank card. May 11 Campus Security was called to the Campus Service offices to investigate a burglary. Multiple spools of copper wire valued at several hundred dollars had been stolen. The Seattle Police Department was called to take a report. There are no suspects at this time. May 14 Eight to 10 lockers in the men s restroom located in the Pastry Arts building were broken into. Only a ring has been reported missing. No suspects at this time. May 15 A student reported that her car which was parked in the South lot had been broken into. The passenger window had been hit at least 11 times with an air gun. BBs were found near the car. The victim had arrived in the lot at 10 am and returned to her car near 8 pm. when she discovered the damage. The Seattle Police Department was called. May 21 A student left his laptop in the library while he and a friend went to the cafeteria. They returned a half an hour later and discovered the laptop was missing. There are no suspects. May 22 Security was called to the Fitness Center to speak to a distraught student. The student stated that she had been harassed repeatedly by a group of students. Security provided her with the security phone number and gave her information on the security phones on campus to contact them if the incidents continue. May 23 A student returned to her car which was parked in the South lot to discover there was damage on the driver s side. A maroon stripe was on the door and several pieces of a taillight were on the ground. The student was provided with the non-emergency phone number for Seattle Police Department. Campus Security will view the security camera footage. May 24 An aide in the Automotive department reported to security that he had witnessed a subject leave campus with several tire rims. That day, the subject told Security that he had removed the rims because he believed they were junk. He stated he would replace the rims. Subject was shown the designated area that held materials belonging to the school that should not be removed. May 25 A student parked his car in the South lot and went to play tennis. When he returned to his car, he discovered that the rear driver s side window had been broken. He stated that he had seen an individual mowing the lawn and there had been a baseball game going on in the field above his vehicle. May 29 A female student was being harassed and threatened by an exboyfriend. The student stated to Security that the subject had also threatened another student. The subject repeatedly posted statements about the student on Facebook and continued to call her. The Seattle Police were called and explained to the victim the process for filing a restraining order and that they would try to arrest the subject. They also stated that the other threatened student must file a complaint. June 6 A locked bike was stolen from the bike rack outside the Foundation office. Suspicious markings were found on another bike leading Security to believe that the thief had planned to steal that bike as well. The victim gave the bike s serial number to the Seattle Police Department. June 8 A student s backpack was stolen from the Games room in the Brockey Center. It was recovered in the men s room. Several textbooks were missing from the backpack. June 18 The gas cap on a campus vehicle was stolen as well as a rear light on another vehicle. No suspects have been found.
