This summer, the interns organized the winery and they really got into their work, which does include thoroughly cleaning & preparing the tanks for new wine!

Tracy Cilona, Art Gallery Coordinator Tracy is an artist/educator/curator who received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A photographer by trade, she has also worked with installation and video. She lives in the glorious Delridge neighborhood of West Seattle, plays a mean bass guitar in the local band PalmerLee and is looking forward to her new position at South. Staff Changes Wendy Price, Grant Coordinator Wendy, the associate director of Workforce, is assuming a new role as the campus Grant Coordinator. She will help write, monitor, and research grants and serve as the liaison with district-wide and state efforts. This position is not adding new costs to the college, as her previous position is being backfilled through reorganization. Wendy will be located in the development office area. 3 Page 3 Fitness Center Closed Work out on your own until the Fitness Center reopens on September 29. Summer Outreach South has seen many visitors this summer, most of them guided around campus by Interim Outreach Director Vanessa Reed and her staff. They have hosted nearly 200 students from the Y U Learn YMCA program from Madison Middle School and a group from the Puget Sound Skill Center. They have also been on the road, representing the college at events including Seattle Goodwill Career Pathways, Annual PASEFIKA Island Festival, White Center Block Party, Southwest Police Precinct Picnic, and the Coast Guard Education Fair. Appreciation Awards At each meeting, the Foundation board presents appreciation awards to faculty, staff and students. Congratulations to the most recent recipients: Ben Taves, Transportation dean; Doug Clapper, Diesel faculty; and Chris Miller, Diesel student. Fall Scholarship Application The South Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to nearly 700 students over the past five years. Funding is available for workshop curriculum development. Resource Fair Departments are invited to participate in the Resource Fair portion from noon-1:30 pm at the Clock Tower Plaza. This is a great opportunity to speak with new and returning students and distribute information relevant to your program. The Seattle Community Colleges amateur radio group consists of licensed ham radio operators who play a vital role in emergency communications for the colleges. The group is called Seattle Community Colleges Emergency Net, or SCCEN. If you re interested in becoming an amateur radio operator, or if you already have a ham license, and are interested in participating in the SCCEN, please contact Betty Lunceford at , blunceford@sccd.ctc.edu. 4 Page 4 CAmPus Security Report August 5 Security was told that a former automotive student entered a shop area and picked up a diagnostic scanner tool about the size of a laptop computer, which he attempted to hide under his shirt as he left the building. Two summer quarter students became suspicious and chased down the former student, who then turned the equipment over to them and left the campus. Seattle Police were notified; the value of the scanner is estimated at $6,600. August 7 A car was seen racing and doing burnouts on the truckdriving concourse at the east edge of the campus. The vehicle was located later at the Automotive Building, where an instructor said a student had been test driving it after repairs. The instructor said he would inform the student that reckless driving is prohibited. August 12 Instructors reported that casual conversation among a group of auto body students escalated into a verbal altercation between two of them. The students were separated and counseled about allowing joking around to evolve into an argument. A student told Security that another student was violating a no-contact restraining order issued on her behalf, and asked that Seattle Police be called. The police contacted the other student to confirm that the protection order was valid and explain his restrictions. When the first student later told police she was a recent victim of domestic violence, the police attempted to find the second student, but he had left the area. August 13 A Career Link student reported that a former student had threatened her off campus before class. The former student said she would come on campus to take care of the current student because of an ongoing dispute and an earlier physical fight between the two. The student was advised to call Security immediately if she is threatened on campus. August 18 A staff member reported her purse stolen from an unlocked desk drawer in the WorkSource office. Items taken included credit cards, Social Security card, checkbook and driver s license. Seattle Police took a report. August 19 Bookstore staff reported that a man tried to walk out without paying for snack items. When questioned at the door, he returned the items but claimed he was not required to pay. A Security officer later encountered the same person and followed him to the men s locker room in the Fitness Center. The man had trouble responding to basic questions, and claimed to be a student but could show no identification. Because of the erratic behavior, Seattle Police were called; they discovered that the man has a record of shoplifting and petty theft. A no-trespassing order was issued against him. August 20 A student reported that his lock was cut off and items removed from a locker in the Auto Technology Building. The student was informed that staff had removed the lock, which is the posted policy for the end of each quarter. Items missing included a set of locks, shoes and $10-$15 in change. August 21 An instructor reported a laptop computer missing from a Cascade Court office. The computer was last seen during spring quarter. Road repair on 16th Ave SW continues through August. 5 Page 5 Georgetown Welcomes Senator Patty Murray Senator Patty Murray visited the Georgetown Campus on August 12, where she participated in a roundtable discussion focused on youth employment. The panel included representatives of the Workforce Development Council, Seattle Youth Employment Program, King County Work Training Program, and three student summer work program participants who shared their stories. Following the discussion, Senator Murray toured the Georgetown facilities. This summer, the Georgetown Campus recovery/stimulus program exposed 100 youth to career opportunities in the trades. The college also operated a Youth Work Readiness project on the main college campus. In addition, our LPN cohort training program is the first stimulus workforce training program running this summer in the state of Washington. 6 Page 6 Photos by Scott Eaton Nicaragua Stove Project The college recently hosted an all-day workshop on the construction of Top-Lit Up Draft (TLUD) biochar cookstoves, taught by noted biochar expert Dr. Paul Anderson. Several of the stoves have been transported and are being demonstrated in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, with the goal of teaching residents how to build them locally.
