3 Page 3 Commencement Positive feedback was received regarding our first afternoon commencement at Benaroya. South s 2012 commencement will take place on Tuesday, June 19, 2:30 p.m. at Benaroya. Important note: The change in date affects the instructional calendar (June 14 should be June 19). Year One and Counting The college has submitted its Year-One Accreditation Report to the Northwest Commission. The document identifies our mission, our four core themes, and how we intend to measure them. Social Media Kudos Students have begun taking to social media to cite positive learning experiences and instructors at South. Recent examples of Facebook posts: I want to thank Tim Walsh and Natalie Simmons for the summer classes, Environmental Issues and Problems and Math, they are both great instructors and dedicate their time to students. Both classes were very informative. Intro to Asian Cinema with Kathy (Whitham) is a great class! Where else do you get to watch two movies per week as part of your homework? Also, the films you watch are all very interesting and diverse, everything from Kung Fu to Ghibli Anime. TRIO Renewed South Seattle Community College s TRiO-Talent Search grant has been renewed by the US Department of Education for the period This is good news for more than 600 Highline and Seattle Public School students served each year under the grant, which provides a comprehensive array of intensive college access services to low-income students who would be the first in their family to attend college. Nuevo Domain To support marketing efforts targeting the Latino(a)/ Hispanic population, South has created a new landing page, PorqueSouth.com. Marci Mitchell (below) happily displays check. Military Friendly School South Seattle Community College has been designated once again by G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly School based on our role in accepting America s veterans as students. G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools across the country to compile its 2012 Guide to Military Friendly Schools. Criteria for making the list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students, and academic accreditations. The honor ranks South in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are doing the most to embrace those who have served their country. Weathering the Storm On August 30, the college was the host site of Exercise Seattle Storm, a scenario-driven, realistic simulation of a Weapons of Mass Destruction chemical hazard threat at the north end of campus, in the Landscape Horticulture area. Participants involved in the exercise included the 10th Civil Support Team, US Army North (USARNORTH) - Bravo Division, Seattle Police Department, Seattle Police Department Bomb Squad, and Washington National Guard J3 Domestic Ops. The exercise concluded at Seattle Central, and was deemed a great success by all.

The 411 on the 934 From Betty Lunceford To ease the transition to the new 934 prefix, we ll be rolling out intercept messages for callers still using the old prefixes to reach the Seattle Community Colleges. The intercept message will advise callers that the prefix they ve dialed has been changed to 934. We ve begun testing with the 903 prefix, and plan to have intercept messages for the remaining 15 prefixes in place within the next few days. What can I do? If you haven t done so already, please start using the new 934 prefix. Change your signature to reflect the new prefix (and new address: first name.last name@ seattlecolleges.edu). Let your students, colleagues, vendors, etc., know of the change. Does this change include fax numbers? Yes, fax numbers have also changed to the 934 prefix. You ll want to change your fax cover sheet information to reflect the new number. What about my old prefix? Will it still work? Yes, your old prefix will continue to work through the end of the year. The intercept message will only be played for callers dialing the old prefix. If they re dialing your new 934 number, the call will connect directly. Thank you all for your support of this major change, and of course, if you have any questions, don t hesitate to Betty Lunceford at Betty.lunceford@seattlecolleges.edu.
