MMA has Kayla Foley meant a great Class of 2017 deal to me these past 3 years. I have grown so much as a person and leader and have had some of the best experiences of my life here. I am very sad to be leaving at the end of the year, but excited for the possibilities ahead. My goal is to study criminology for Pre-Law at Roanoke College. I plan to work as much as possible this summer and to be involved in the work-study program at Roanoke College to help pay my own way. On merit and by using dependency status I have reduced my tuition payment to approximately $5,000 annually. Any donations, large or small, would be sincerely appreciated because these costs will only cover my tuition and housing. If you have any questions concerning the specifics of my situation or if further assistance is needed please contact the alumni office: alumni@militaryschool.com Thank you for any donations and support. 4 What MMA Means to Me Steve Wilmer Class of 1971 It wasn't until I was a teacher at Antilles Military Academy in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, that I became aware of the sacrifice my parents had made. It has taken a long time to realize the impact MMA made on my life. I clearly remember in public school being told I needed to be more organized, but only at MMA did they tell and show us how. Today in business and private life I still follow a lot of what I was taught. At night, I prepare for the next day, write out the action items that need to be addressed. I'm always early for meetings, and I always have a back-up plan. I still set goals. Today, I still wear a tie to any meeting where I don't know someone. I learned to do that at MMA. If you arrive not wearing a tie, and everyone else is wearing one, there's no backing up. The expression was: There is no second chance to make a first impression. All through college studies, I followed what I was taught at MMA. Go to the back of the chapter, read the questions first. Then, go through the chapter and read the bold type. Any time you come across a word in anything you are reading, where you don t know the exact meaning; go to the margin of the page and make a mark. After you finish the chapter, look up word in question, write it and its definition in the back of the book where there are always blank pages. Almost all my books for over forty years have those marks and definitions. In college students would ask, how do you do keep your grades up, you never study? When I tried to explain that I got up at 5:30 AM, and went to the student center (above the cafeteria) to do homework, they all thought I was joking. The cafeteria staff were impressed that I was always first in line at breakfast. Back in the 80's I was hired at a large company in Houston TX. I knew my competition was far more qualified for the position, but I got the job. Months later, I asked the director why he chose me over the other prospect. His answer was, you addressed me as 'sir' when I talked to you. I didn't learn that habit in public school! Nearly 50 years have passed since I went through the South gate at MMA to start a new life. For three years at MMA, I worked through the gauntlet of faculty, staff and ranking cadets. I would be quick to say that attending bible studies my senior year in college, probably made the biggest impact on my life, but attending MMA, definitely impacted how I would live, and stays with me even today. Friends and family find it strange that I still fold my socks, T-shirts, underwear, all neatly organized in my dresser. In the closet my shirts, suits and sport coats are right sleeve out. Shoes are lined up underneath I achieved lots of major and minor goals over the years. One interesting goal was to publish a book about my first year as a cadet. The book is fiction, inspired by a true story. The title is: MILITARY SCHOOL? ME? It is with the publisher now and will be available from Amazon, and Barnes & Noble Amazon, early summer. Kind Regards Steve Wilmer 71 N9 PAGE 4

7 Founder s Day Weekend We hope you were able to join us for the Founders Day Weekend Celebration on April 21st and 22nd. Massanutten has been in business for 118 years with a simple mission statement to deliver a high quality education to prepare for a high quality life. There have been many opportunities for Massanutten to be derailed. The Academy has been able to continue through many difficult times throughout history. One of the main reasons we were able to continue is because when there was trouble the Alumni stepped up and helped in any way they could. They believed in the school and wanted to improve the facilities and improve the experience at Massanutten. They gave their time, talent, and treasure. It is important for the new Alumni and current students when they become Alumni one day to understand that they would not be where they are today if it were not for Massanutten. There were many opportunities during the weekend for Alumni to reminisce and learn more about the current cadets, as well as celebrate Massanutten Military Academy during this Founder s day Weekend. Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the jersey retirement ceremony at the Academy for Frank Mason III. I'm proud to call this pleasant young man my fellow alum. Frank is the highest celebrated college basketball player this year and has been awarded all of the highest honors in his sport. He is also the number one draft pick going into the NBA. His highest accomplishment is his outstanding character and his desire to live by example each day the motto of the Academy. The Frank Mason Jersey Retirement ceremony was opened to the public as way for all of the community to say congratulations and honor his hard work and success with the University of Kansas, Jayhawks. After his children graduated from college and began building their own families, he returned to MMA and asked what he could do to help the academy that had Dean Simonds 63 accepting the taught him so much and never forgot. Alumni of the Year award from Dean s main focus was to enhance the William Magruder, Chairman of experience of the cadets, he has hosted the Board of Trustees many fishing trips and cookouts at his home as a way to give the cadets that spirit of family while away from their own. He shows them to love and respect the school as he had and shows them the value of the academy to their lives. Something that was close to his heart as a cadet and still is today was attending church and being part of the community. His first goal was to engage the community with the cadets. He went to every church in the area to help the cadets who were interested in continuing their religious practices. Whichever their religion he found a place of worship for them to attend and get involved in the churches community activities as well. Due to his efforts the community has embraced these cadets, MMA and their mission. Dean not only helps the cadets but also works hard on keeping in touch with other Alumni. He has taken over the running of the Alumni Newsletter You can always find Dean talking to cadets and telling them about and is on the Alumni Council in charge the his owns experiences at MMA. of the Alumni outreach. 9 **Please note all outings are subject to Academy and parental permission. More than one authorized adult with an approved background check is required to attend.** Every Sunday, if requested by the cadet or their parents there is an opportunity available for them to attend religious services. Alumni have taken time to find places of worship available in the area for most of the religious denominations practiced in the families of our current cadets. Currently there are two cars available for the transportation. More Alumni and cars to assist would be wonderful. If you are interested in helping out even as little as one weekend a month please commandant@militaryschool.com At the beginning of the day Cadets are picked up by an Alumnus and taken to the service and after are picked up by the same Alumnus. Usually the cadets are treated to ice cream and sometimes lunch. The interest to participate in the services has grown quite a bit since it first began. These Cadets are helping the community and the St John Boscoe Community Outreach house do their twice a year seasonal exchange of goods. All the winter items and holiday items go back into storage and spring and summer come out. In the past this task can take volunteers a week for the exchange. Now with the Academy s help the process is usually done within a few hours. They not only help with this but also help maintain the outside of the property as well. MMA has received numerous thank you letters from the coordinator of the outreach house thanking the cadets for all of their hard work. Cadets are given the opportunity to attend religious services if requested. Between the months of October and March one weekend a month an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is offered to the community, and after the service there is an opportunity to gain community service hours. After filling up with pancakes the cadets help the church by cleaning up after the pancake breakfast. * It is not required to attend services in order to participate in the community service.* Massanutten s Colonel Gonzalez met with Patrick Kechr, manager of the Civil War Headquarters in Middletown, both standing in front of a memorial dedicated to those soldiers that lost their lives during the Battle of Cedar Creek in October They discussed how our cadets can help with the Civil War Reenactment location. During the Colonel s Camp summer program this year MMA cadets will be teaming up with the local Boy Scouts to clear the trails of debris in order to maintain the historical trails the soldiers took on the way to the battle of Cedar Creek.
