Authors of MMA Read the latest books from MMA s own Alumni authors: Stephen Wilmer class of 71 Ronald Higgins class of 59. Military School? Me? By Stephen Wilmer After graduating from MMA Stephen Wilmer attended High Point University in North Carolina and graduated with a BA in Spanish and then taught high school at Antilles Military Academy in Puerto Rico. This is one of the few books that discuss high school experiences in a military academy. Military School? Me? is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Unknown Evil by Ronald Higgins After graduating Ronald Higgins attended the academy of dramatic arts in New York and majored in business and minored in acting. After spending 8 years in the Air Force he spent several years as an actor. This is the third book written by Mr. Higgins and he rode his motorcycle from Tennessee to deliver his latest book to MMA! Unknown Evil is available at Amazon. JROTC Rappel Tower Project Early plans for the Rappel Tower The Rappel Tower project is almost complete and we couldn t be more excited. The tower Is located at the Gordon D. Bowman Stadium to the left of the bleachers. The tower is 16 feet wide and 40 feet high and will truly be an asset to the academy. The structure will set MMA apart from other Military schools by offering the cadets the ability to participate in specific training not available at other similar institutions. We hope the new equipment will provide a special advantage: instill courage, provide self-esteem, and produce leadership opportunities. N10 PAGE 2

3 Alumni News Success continues to grow for our very own Frank Mason III. Soon after MMA s very own jersey retirement ceremony for Mason, being awarded Alumni Ambassador of the year and the Naismith Player of the Year, Frank Mason III was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round. Following this wonderful news he was also nominated for an Espy for best male college athlete with opportunity for all fans to vote for Mason by public online voting. For those who don t know Mason he attended Massanutten Military Academy for a Post-Graduate year under Coach Meyers and has often credit MMA for helping him to prepare for the future and how beneficial that extra post graduate year was. Congratulations Frank Mason III we are beyond proud and wish you all the future success! Alumnus Receives Staff Member of the Year Congratulations to Alumnus and TAC officer Justin Elshafie for winning Staff Member of the year. This much respected award was voted on by staff, faculty, and cadets. Elshafie graduated from the MMA class of 2014 and is the son of the Dean of Academics. He says one of the best things about working at the school is the opportunity to teach and advise students about what to expect and how to be successful as a Massanutten Military Academy Cadet. Being a TAC officer is his chance to give back to MMA. Recently, Justin Elshafie married fellow alumna Tristin Huffman, now Elshafie, who also works at Massanutten Military Academy. Newest Alumnus Speaks on attending a Military Academy Jessica Hirsch was one of the graduating 2017 cadets Seniors. At her time at Massanutten she was one of the longest boarding cadets attending the Academy for two summer schools and three school years. One of her biggest accomplishments while at MMA was becoming only the second female battalion commander in the past five years. The success of her time at Massanutten was proven through her acceptances to numerous colleges and earning $127,600 in scholarships. She has chosen to attend James Madison University and ROTC program to study Psychology and plans to continue on to the U.S. Army. We are sure she will be an asset to the program as she was an asset to this academy. Jessica Hirsch was chosen by the Northern Virginia Daily for their yearly interview with one of our graduating seniors where she spoke about the benefits of attending a Military Academy. She talked about the independence she felt, the comradery with fellow cadets, the benefits of a structured environment, and the support from her teachers and mentors. She also discussed her plans for the future after the military where she hopes to work with veterans suffering from PTSD. Congratulations Jessica Wishing you all the best in you future endeavors! The interest to participate in the services has grown quite a bit since it first began. Currently there are two cars available for the transportation. More Alumni and cars to assist would be wonderful.
