Knights Courier June From our State Deputy Family and Forgiveness Who has not held a grudge against someone? Who has not been angry with a family member, friend or co-worker for something they have done or failed to do, at least in our eyes? Why is it so hard to forgive? Jesus tells St. Peter to forgive 70 times seven times. Not a number, but to forgive as often as needed. Each one of us is family, by blood, by friendship, by association but most importantly by Christ. We must find a way to forgive. We must put aside our feelings and our judgment and forgive those who we think have wronged us. Richard W. Lowery State Deputy Home Mobile statedeputy@nebraskakofc.org Give away your faith not only to new members but as important or maybe more important to members who have fallen away that need our help and our love. Every Council deals with members who no longer want to be Knights for one reason or another. How many of these Knights no longer want to be members because they have been hurt by something someone has said or done, or more often not said or done? Not asking them to help, not welcoming them to meetings, not including them in activities. What is harder to do; forgive or ask for forgiveness? I would guess it would be, in most cases, to ask for forgiveness. But maybe this is what our Councils need to do to bring members and families back. When a member has not paid dues for a couple of years, does your Council take the time to try and find out why or do you just send out the paperwork that starts the suspension process? What if, by simply talking to or calling up the member and starting out the conversation with We have missed you, and if the Council or someone has done something to upset you, please forgive us and help us make it right, could we bring them back? Can you imagine the shock of starting out a conversation that way? Can you imagine the doors that might be opened? Just giving that member a chance to talk may be all that is needed to get them active again. We all need forgiveness and we need to forgive. Holding things inside can only cause destruction and separation. The devil uses anger, hurt and pain to drive a wedge between us and Christ. Bringing things into the open in the light of Christ, will help drive out the devil and bring us closer to Christ. The same may be true for membership; the devil drives the wedge between the member and the Council. As my Pastor, Fr. Sullivan, said; No lies, no secrets, no darkness. Isn t that what the Knights of Columbus is about? Being the light of Christ and bringing families closer to Christ and sharing our faith? We need to give every Catholic family the chance to grow closer to God. Charity is the foundation of our Order. Giving away our faith is the most charitable thing that we can do. Give away your faith not only to new members but as important or maybe more important to members who have fallen away that need our help and our love. Help them know that they are loved, needed and wanted. Don t just write them off, bring them home. I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your State Deputy for the past year and for your confidence in me to allow me to serve a second term. Gail and I have traveled to many functions over the past year and met many new friends and renewed many friendships. With Gods help we will do our best to continue to travel and be with you. Know that you are in our payers. May God Bless each of you. Vivat Jesus Richard Lowery, State Deputy

Knights Courier June Per Capita: What is it? Per Capita Due September 1 by Tony Hergott, State Secretary home mobile secretary@nebraskakofc.org What is per capita? Where does it go? How much is it? Where do the assessed numbers come from? These are some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to the per capita billing. Following are answers to each of these questions. Hopefully this will help everyone understand the per capita assessment. What is per capita? Per capita is an assessment on every member of the Knights of Columbus in all jurisdictions. Only Disabled and Honorary Life members are excluded from this yearly per capita assessment. Both the State Council and Supreme have a per capita assessment. Where does the money go? The state assessment is designed to assist the State Council in funding things like programs, conventions, Knights Courier, and the other expenses that are associated with running an organization like ours. Knights of Columbus Statewide Disaster Relief Fund The afternoon of June 16 was the beginning of some difficult days for Nebraskans in and around Pilger Nebraska. A large tornado destroyed up to 75% of the buildings in the town of about 350 people. The devastation to a small town is huge. We as Knights of Columbus need to help. Through the Nebraska State Council Disaster Relief Fund we intend to distribute gift cards to help families with basic necessities. If Councils or individuals would like to donate to this relief effort please send check to: Nebraska Disaster Relief Fund, C/O State Secretary Tony Hergott, th St., Columbus NE Funds will be distributed according to the guidelines established for the Disaster Relief Fund and could include matching dollar for dollar grants of up to $300 per family. If you or your Councils plan to make a donation, please send your donation to State Secretary Hergott by July 1. How much is it? State per capita assessment Your state per capita invoice is received two times each fiscal year. Invoices are sent directly to your council s Financial Secretary and are to be paid from your council s annual dues. As part of these dues, $8.75 per member per year is currently assessed by the State Council and is your council s State per capita billing. One half will be billed July 1, 2014 due by September 1, 2014 for $4.38 per member. The second half will be billed $4.37 per member on January 1, 2015 due by March 1, Supreme per capita asessment Supreme s per capita assessment is currently $4.50 per member per billing (twice yearly) and is your council s Supreme per capita billing. These invoices are billed by Supreme directly to your council s Financial Secretary. Where do the assessed numbers come from? For both per capita invoices, the State Council uses the number of members that each council has on Supreme s membership roster as of July 1st of that current fiscal year. This is another reason why it is important that your council s Financial Secretary accurately maintains and updates your membership records with Supreme State Lottery Winners The Knights of Columbus have always supported our priests, seminarians and religious. One way we do this in Nebraska is through the Vocations Fund which is directly benefitted through the sale of lottery tickets. Your participation in the Nebraska Knights of Columbus State Lottery by selling or purchasing tickets is vital to the continuation of this fund. We thank everyone who sold or bought tickets this year. Winners were drawn at the State Banquet, Saturday evening (April 26) during the State Convention in Kearney. They are: 1st place winner $2500 Walter Valasek 2nd place winner $1000 Carolyn Menke 3rd place winner $750 Al Pfeifer 4th place winner $500 Jerome Witte Congratulations and thanks for your support!

6 Three Parts of Success - How Do We Rate on our Membership Goals? by Don Ferneding, PSD State Membership Director home mobile membership@nebraskakofc.org Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council I worked with a college professor on an education grant that talked about the three parts of success and in fact, if any of the three were missing one could not say you were successful. The three parts are emotions, measurement and sustainability. He also stated the first part was easy, the second more difficult, and the third being the most difficult. I thought about those three words many times and most recently as it pertains to the membership programs of the state and all 170 councils. Emotionally, I feel you have been dynamite. The feeling of success is definitely there with councils that I have talked to. You also need to be complimented on the second part, measurement. We have met or exceeded many of the goals set for us by Supreme. New Councils, number of councils meeting individual goals, number of man hours spent in support of charitable functions, number of hours in support of our church and clergy, dollars raised for the Intellectually Challenged, and on and on. I would encourage each GK to meet with his officers and take the time to actually write down all of the wonderful things that you have done this past year. You may be surprised as to how long the list actually is. Now, for the last part of true success, sustainability. How do you truly measure it on the council level, in your communities, how will the state measure it and finally how will Supreme measure your success? This is the time, on the council level, to create that Council flyer, outline your successes and distribute it to everyone. Don t be afraid of advertising in the local papers, the back of church, or maybe even the post office. You do great work make sure that your community knows it. On the state level, it gets harder to measure. We use your reports and the award programs to help. Make sure these are sent in. It is our way to hear of your successes. Finally, on the Supreme level, success is measured by goals and quotas. In the end, people will want to belong to very successful organizations. If we are to continue our record of over 30 years of continued growth we must sustain our membership. We have added another plus in membership this past year due to your work, not the state s and not Supreme s. It is not about numbers, it is all about our faith, our church, our communities and families. You ve done a great job and you deserve to advertise your success. Do so and sustainability will be yours as well as the true meaning of success. Thank you for a great job this past fiscal year and I look forward to another great year. For all those Grand Knights ending their term, I wish to thank you personally for a great job, and for those new Grand Knights I wish to welcome you into a great fraternity of men. I would like to also thank all of those who have completed the Grand Knight survey. The results will be discussed at the Leadership Seminar. Have you made your reservations? Hope to see you in North Platte. Send Representatives to the July Seminar by Matt Richardson, State Program Director home mobile programdirector@nebraskakofc.org It s been a great year so far. With a very successful State Convention behind us, I am looking forward to seeing everyone in North Platte for the Annual Leadership Seminar. IMPORTANT JULY SEMINAR Make sure you have representation at the seminar. All the detailed information about the programs that is taken back to your council from this meeting is extremely important and beneficial. The program information provided by the directors and chairmen will aid you as you start your new fraternal year and provide you with the tools for success. See you in North Platte! FRATERNAL YEAR CONTINUES TO JUNE 30, 2014 Please remember the fraternal year runs until June 30. We can still reach our membership goal. One more member during the month of June in each council means we reach our membership goal.

Knights Courier June The Man of the Shroud The Shroud of Turin Exhibit Touring Nebraska through August Presented by Spirit Catholic Radio in partnership with the Knights of Columbus In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Spirit Catholic Radio is bringing a traveling exhibit, titled The Man of the Shroud, to nine different cities across Nebraska during June and July. Visiting the exhibit is free of charge. The Shroud of Turin has long been venerated by the faithful and is believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. The exhibit will be on display at various parishes and Catholic high schools in cooperation with local Knights of Columbus councils. The traveling exhibit, developed by the late Msgr. Guilio Ricci, president of the Roman Center for the Study of the Holy Shroud at the Vatican, includes as the centerpiece a full-length photographic image of the Shroud made by the Eastman Kodak Co. In addition, the exhibit contains a nearly lifesize crucified corpus showing the wounds of Christ corresponding to the Passion narrative in the Gospel accounts and the wounds shown on the Shroud. It also contains 92 panels detailing the history and science of the Shroud. The Shroud was chosen to coincide with our 15th anniversary theme, Encounter Jesus, said Jim Carroll, executive director of Spirit Catholic Radio. The Shroud brings the person of Jesus to something we can experience with our senses. My hope is that Jesus as a real person is something that can be carried with people after they view the exhibit. This is physical evidence that Jesus was a real person, and that he suffered and died, but of course, rose again. Spirit Catholic Radio is the area s only Catholic radio station heard across most of Nebraska, western Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Spirit Catholic Radio streams online at spiritcatholicradio.com and can be heard on the radio at FM in Omaha and Lincoln, 91.5-FM in central Nebraska, 88.3-FM in northeast Nebraska, 90.1-FM in North Platte and 89.3-FM in Chadron. 9 Knights Courier June My Catholic Identity and the Knights of Columbus by Dan Whitehead, Grand Knight Council 6192 I grew up in a family with an Italian Catholic mother and a father who converted to Catholicism after being raised a Protestant. My memories of being Catholic were that of having the Catholic religion forced upon us kids and me openly rebelling against it. I found out later in life that those Catholics who had converted, like my dad, usually practiced their religion in the strictest of (Catholic-Protestant) ways as though it were just between them and God. As a child, I was also aware that the Knights of Columbus were always around, but I never understood what they did or how they were involved with the Church. When I had become an adult and lived on my own, I wavered between attending church and not attending church. There was never any consistency. But as I grew older, I felt something was missing and began to attend church on a regular basis. I watched others as they prayed, whether they paid attention during the Mass, and how much they sang. I read and reread the Sunday Scriptures trying to understand how this all applied to me. But even then I felt there was something else missing. One Sunday morning at a parish breakfast I was asked to join the Knights of Columbus. Without thinking I said YES. This is when my life changed! Soon I began attending meetings and learning what being a Knight meant and I realized that I was becoming a better Catholic. I was practicing the First Principle of Charity on a regular basis, helping others for no other reason than it was the right thing to do. I also became familiar with clergy on a more personal level than just watching them during Mass. Many were also Knights and the casual conversations we had over lunch and dinner soon helped me to understand why I never strayed too far from the Church. Being a Knight ensured that my Catholic Identity was real. You see, being baptized does not always lead to Catholic Identity... it is much more than that. To me, Catholic Identity is living as a Catholic Gentleman should: practicing Charity, Unity and Fraternity among other Catholics; and Patriotism. This I learned from being a Knight of Columbus, the largest fraternal order of Catholic men in the world. The Knights taught me how to pray the rosary, something I am ashamed to say I never knew, and which has now become a daily ritual. As a Knight, I am a regular at Sunday and Holy Day Mass, and often a weekday Mass which I never believed I would do. Now I feel more alive within the Church which raised me, the one I never allowed to embrace me. This is all possible because of the Knights of Columbus. I now know what being Catholic really means. NOTE: Grand Knight Dan Whitehead wrote this article to share with you how the Knights has deepened his own realtionship with the Church and how he finally recognized his own Gift of Faith. Give another man (and his family) the opportunity to realize what it means to be a Catholic Gentleman and find his own Catholic Identity. Ask him to join the Knights. 132nd Annual Supreme Convention - Delegates Attending as Nebraska Delegates Delegates were selected Richard Lowery, State Deputy, Council Blessed Sacrament Lincoln at the State Convention in Jim Haiar, Past State Deputy, Council St. Wenceslaus Omaha April and remaining slots Tony Hergott, State Secretary, Council St. Isidore Columbus filled by State Deputy Rich Matt Richardson, State Program Director, Council 2272 St. Joseph s West Point Lowery. 17 Knights Courier June State Golf Tournament, August by Kevin Ostdiek, State Athletic Chairman home Summer is off to a great start and I hope that your family has been able to take advantage of the warm weather by getting out and enjoying our state parks, hiking and biking trails, and the many fantastic golf courses of our great state. If you are a golfer, this is a time of year when you still have hope that this will be the year that everything comes together and your driving, chipping, and putting all work at the same time! Many councils will be sponsoring or participating in golf tournaments. I encourage everyone to support the many fund-raising golf tournaments that are available during the summer months. A lot of money goes to support wonderful causes while we re chasing that little white ball around the course. And just as important, a lot of Knights develop friendships and camaraderie while participating in these tournaments. I m inviting all Knights who are golfers to our annual Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament on August 16th & 17th. This year, the tournament is at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell (the course is 5 miles south of Kearney on Hwy 44.) This is a phenomenal links-style course, designed by Jim Engh, full of challenges for golfers of all skill levels. We have a great package that includes two days of golf and a great dinner at the Kearney Holiday Inn on Saturday night after Mass. To allow Knights to get out to Kearney, and still get home in good time after the event, we will tee off with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday the 16th and at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday the 17th. We have a special rate for all Knights of Columbus golfers at the Holiday Inn Express just 4 miles or so from the course. The entry form including hotel room and golf is on page 16 and available online at GolfRegistrationForm.pdf. As usual, we will flight this event, so even if you are not a terrific ball-striker that can routinely shoot par, you still have a chance to win a prize. If you re like me and struggle to break 100, I am sure that you ll still have a lot of fun enjoying a fantastic course and getting to know your fellow Knights. Please promote this to all of the golfers in your council. I hope to see you at Awarii Dunes in August. Please contact me if you have any questions about the golf tournament or any other athletic event at: Kevin Ostdiek, State Athletic Chairman home athletics@nebraskakofc.org Awarii Dunes Golf Course, Axtell, Nebraska Visit often for updates, new program information, and important links. One Life, One Rose - Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run by Larry Peetz, State Community Director home mobile community@nebraskakofc.org ARRIVAL IN NEBRASKA The Silver Rose will be coming to Nebraska on Sunday, August 31, 2014 and crossing our state in 21 days. This year it comes to us from South Dakota. We will receive it in the northeast corner of our state. We pass it on to Kansas on Sunday, September 21, The actual schedule will be announced at the Leadership Seminar in North Platte July 19-20, 2014 and online at HISTORY OF THE SILVER ROSE PROGRAM The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program began in 1960 as a project of the Knights of Columbus Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project in several Knights of Columbus jurisdictions. Each year, a Silver Rose honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe and reaffirming our commitment to the sanctity of human life is carried by Knights from Canada, through the United States, and into Mexico to arrive at the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico on December 12, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Nick s score of 24 out of 25 baskets at the State Competition placed him as one of 28 International Winners selected from the nearly 110,000 participants across the Order. Congratulations to Nick Chambers, his family, and his sponsoring council, St. Wenceslaus in Omaha, Council **At the Nebraska State Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, one of our state competitors went above and beyond in sportsmanship. David Fanta, realizing that we had made a mistake in awarding him a first place trophy, informed us that he should have received second place and that Nolan should have been awarded first place. After checking the score sheets we realized that we had made an error and that David was correct. Over the upcoming summer, State Deputy Richard Lowery and State Youth Director Mitchell Lowery will be making a special presentation to David. David showed the true spirit of what our Youth Programs are all about! Again, congratulations to all of our winners and our participants this year! And thank you to all of the councils who helped make this year s Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship a great success.
