FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Creating Chapters of Excellence The Creating Chapters of Excellence (CCE) Program aims to promote high chapter performance and educational and cultural programming within the community. There are currently 16 chapters participating in the program. If your chapter is interested in CCE, contact edu, or visit our Web site at Clear Thinking When Drinking: A CCE-sponsored program On Saturday, March 28, 2009 in the Kaufmann Auditorium, the new members in Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Theta Delta Chi, accompanied by their big brothers, received an alcohol education seminar, entitled Clear Thinking When Drinking, presented by Roman T. Solohub, Founder, President and CEO of Thinking When Drinking ( The program provides college students with alcohol education using a harm reduction model and educates them on responsible drinking. Chapter members in attendance received a copy of the book of the same title. Neighborhoods: Alpha - Beta - Gamma Alpha Neighborhood Event Creating Chapters of Excellence representatives from the CCE Alpha Neighborhood of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Lambda Pi Chi, FIJI, Chi Phi and Sigma Chi came together on Saturday, December 6, 2008 to celebrate the end of classes and to bring some holiday cheer to needy children in Tompkins County. Over thirty fraternity and sorority members participated in the Toys for Tots charity event, bringing in bags and boxes filled with toys. Beta Neighborhood Event The Beta Neighborhood hosted an interactive and educational scavenger hunt at the Johnson Museum on May 6, Members from Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Delta Psi, Kappa Delta, Theta Delta Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Kappa Phi Lambda were paired up to search through multiple exhibits and answer several questions put together by the museum staff through an educational scavenger hunt. The chapter members learned the rules, broke into teams, introduced themselves and then the teams were sent on the scavenger hunt. The teams were challenged with questions ranging from identifying a character in a painting; to creatively drawing ones own interpretation of a piece of art; to simply locating an artifact and giving its name. Each team member was awarded an Ithaca-themed book. Gamma Neighborhood Event The Gamma neighborhood, which consists of Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and Alpha Tau Omega, decided to focus on serving those in need in the Ithaca community. In November, the Gamma neighborhood decided to furnish Thanksgiving meals to those who are less fortunate. Each chapter was assigned a certain Thanksgiving meal fixing, such as yams, vegetables, dessert, turkey, etc. The donations were collected, and holiday gift baskets were made and donated to Catholic Charities providing meals for at least seven families in the Ithaca area. Additionally, to build community and get to know members from the other chapters, the neighborhood celebrated its success that evening with burgers at the Glenwood Pines. Cashen Mentors The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs would like to thank the three Cashen Mentors for their dedication to making the Creating Chapters of Excellence (CCE) program a success and their service to those 16 chapters participating in the program. Reighan Gillam is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and mentored the Gamma Neighborhood consisting of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Lambda Phi Epsilon National Fraternity, Inc. Christina Sannon is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and mentored the Alpha Neighborhood consisting of Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) Fraternity, Chi Phi Fraternity and Sigma Chi (along with Balfour Fellow Tyler Barger). Jonathan Zacherman is a member of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) Fraternity and mentored the Beta Neighborhood consisting of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Delta Sorority, Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Tyler Barger, of Sigma Chi Fraternity, is a member of Balfour Fellow, and is in the Alpha neighborhood.

Call 2 Action Summit In September 2008, a Call 2 Action (C2A) Summit was held in response to data that clearly identified problematic student behaviors as they pertain to alcohol and other drug consumption, hazing, diversity, and academic performance within the Greek community as compared to non-greek students at Cornell. That meeting pushed the Cornell Greek community to respond in a manner that created real and substantive change. Each chapter president and at least one other officer were invited to attend the Call 2 Action Summit, on September 5 and 6, The Summit explored both in large and small group settings and smaller group new member education/intake/recruitment, alcohol and drug use, and academic performance. In addition to the students, nearly 30 alumni participated in the Summit, both as attendees, and also as small group facilitators. The Tri-Council presidents agreed to take on the next steps of moving the challenges facing the Cornell Greek Community forward and formed a C2A Taskforce. The purpose of the C2A Taskforce was to address the problematic behaviors that exist today, but to also provide an opportunity for a working group to be available to assist with long-term maintenance of the community. Greeks Go Green The Taskforce included alumni, student leaders, OFSA staff, and faculty to devolop a formal charge; share initial ideas, and to focus on providing guidance and input around overarching strategies and identifying the components which are necessary to an effective, sustainable, wholesale change and plan for distribution and education of agreed upon actions; and successfully implement strategies for the spring semester. To promote systemic changes to: New Member Recruitment, Intake/Education & and Initiation Social Responsibility Academic Achievement Diversity The Taskforce will use a strategic approach having the following prongs: Effective Policy Education Alternatives Effective Consequences C2A in 08 NALFO fraternity brothers at the 2008 Call 2 Action Summit. Greeks Go Green (GGG) is an initiative to make the Cornell s fraternities and sororities more environmentally sustainable. It was kicked off at the A.D. White Leadership conference, and since then has been working hard to foster a culture of environmentalism among Greeks. Each chapter has elected a Sustainability Chair, with the role of working with Greeks Go Green to facilitate programming and environmental responsibility among members. Through a partnership with Hillel, over five hundred Compact Flourescent Light bulbs were donated and distributed to chapters along with a short presentation on energy conservation. Another goal of the GGG campaign is improving recycling systems in each house. Greeks Go Green is working in collaboration with the Varna Community Center (VCC) to set up a weekly collection of refundable cans and bottles from chapters. The funds raised through this project will help support the community programs provided by the VCC. The Greeks Go Green campaign has come very far over the past year and shows a great deal of promise in improving the environmental impact and awareness of the Greek system for the future FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS

Council Highlights Graduate Fellows of the Cornell Greek Community The Cornell Greek Community Graduate Fellows responsibilities include: Co-advising the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Letter Council, and/or Panhellenic Council Assisting with system-wide trainings, workshops and programs Mentorship to council executive board officers Support for the chapters FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs would like to thank the two Graduate Fellows who dedicated their time and energy to the leadership and program development of the Cornell Greek community and the three governing councils. Jessica Intravia is a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Jessica revamped the Recruitment Counselor training program, interviewed outgoing officers to do exit interviews, helped with the new member education task-force and provided guidance and mentoring to the Panhellenic executive board. Nwanyinma Nnodum is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Nwanyinma was instrumental in formalizing the MGLC 5-year strategic plan, developed educational MGLC videos, mentored the MGLC Executive Board and assisted with the development of a more formalized recruitment weekend process. Northeast Greek Leadership Association In February 2009, 15 leaders for the Greek community represented Cornell University at the Northeast Greek Leadership Association Annual Conference in Hartford, Connecticut. While in attendance, students gleaned useful ideas from educational sessions and keynotes on a variety of topics. They were also allowed the opportunity to learn from their counterparts at other institutions in the Northeast. This year the Greek community was awarded the prestigious Programming Award for Excellence in Philanthropy/ Community Service. CU Hazing Prevention Week This year marked the first annual Cornell Hazing Prevention week sponsored by the Greek community and the OFSA. Held in February, the week consisted of two major programs: a speaker presentation with discussion about the documentary Haze; a discussion about hazing with members of the Greek community to promote awareness and understanding. Greek Movers and Shakers Greek Movers and Shakers is a program that allows Greek students to help first-year students move into their dorm rooms when they arrive on campus in August. In 2008, there were approximately 225 Greeks that came to help. Greeks came back a day early to train with orientation leaders, provide assistance to first-year families, and get freshmen acclimated to Cornell and Greek life. Parents were thrilled with the helpful nature of the Greek students, and they were left with an improved perception of the Greek community at Cornell. Excellence in Education Award The Association of Fraternity Advisors recognized the collaborative efforts of the Cornell University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Cornell Outdoor Education (COE) with the 2008 Excellence in Educational Programming Award for the Positively challenging initiative. Positively Challenging is a collaborative effort to provide members of the fraternity and sorority community with alternatives to hazing and alcohol abuse through adventure-based leadership development activities. More than 500 Greeks members have participated in a COE program over the past two and a half years. IFC Highlights Cascadilla Gorge cleanup - In partnership with the Plantations Natural Areas Program and Chi Phi Fraternity, ten staff from Cornell Outdoor Education rappelled down and cleaned accumulated trash and refuse from a portion of the Cascadilla Gorge slopes. Trash was hauled out of the gorge by 18 volunteers from Chi Phi. In years past, the fraternities had conducted the clean ups themselves, but safety issues prevented this from being continued. The fraternities hope to maintain and strengthen this partnership to help keep the gorges gorgeous. Overall the project was a tremendous success, and the area that was cleaned ended up being five times larger than what was originally anticipated. Interfraternity Council Summit In spring 2009, chapter presidents, representatives, and the IFC executive board spent a day addressing a number of issues facing fraternities at Cornell. The event was a culmination of

semester long discussions sparked by the Call 2 Action Summit in the fall. It proved to be a valuable time for leaders to address and tackle growing problems within the system. Attendees were able to have an honest conversation about the future of the Cornell s Greek community and focus on council-wide improvement. As a result six resolutions were passed that addressed new member education, social responsibility, and academics. The event was another positive step illustrating the Interfraternity Council s dedication to continual improvement and the effectiveness of self-governance. MGLC Highlights The Multicultural Greek Letter Council (MGLC) completed a 5-year Strategic Plan for its member organizations that focused on areas of internal/external relations, recruitment, viability of membership and alumni development. This plan also included a Path to Goals that would outline which stakeholders would be responsible for completing the assigned goals. The purpose of this plan is to unite the council behind one purpose and set them on a path for success in the future. The Mis-Education of the Black Greek program brought Rasheed Ali Cromwell, Esq. to campus during the spring 2009 semester to educate members of the MGLC community, and any others interested, on the multicultural fraternal movement. Rasheed is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The program was a huge success with the members of MGLC wanting to bring him back to campus to learn more about the change in expectations from pledging to membership intake. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Re-established The first intercollegiate fraternity, established by African- Americans, the Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, was re-established on October 18, The fraternity had been suspended, but 17 new members were initiated into the fraternity, which is a member of the Multicultural Greek Letter Council. The fraternity was founded at Cornell in 1906, by seven founders known as the seven jewels. PHC Highlights The academic year for the Panhellenic Council has been one wrought with transition. The students at Cornell have an amazing capacity for learning and leading. Yet, it has been challenging to help them see a path other than the one frequently used here at Cornell the Cornell bubble is strong. They have worked together to address several concerns within the Panhellenic community: unity and trust, the new member development programs, social responsibility and values alignment. The New Member Education Task-force has made substantial progress in tackling the heavily weighted issues inherent in the culture of Cornell s Panhellenic new member program. They have found that many chapters desire change but need support and motivation to make changes. The values of Greek life are intertwined with the changes and advancement that the Panhellenic community seeks. As the Panhellenic leaders look to the betterment of the community, they do so with the values they stand for firmly. WHAT Committee The Panhellenic Women s Health Advisory Team (W.H.A.T.) is an organization that aims to educate women of the Panhellenic community on health education. The group aims to distribute educational information as well as plan workshops, speakers, and other health programs. The team organized a Women s Wellness Week, which focused on mental health, sexual health and consent, exercise, and nutrition. Two workshops were put on. One; a rape and consent discussion and a self-defense class. The other was from the Cornell Fitness Center, on how to properly use free weights and exercise bands. Junior Panhellenic Council This year, the Junior Panhellenic Council made changes in an attempt to revamp the program and increase its effectiveness by electing executive positions, for the first time to foster leadership growth. An outside presentation from Cornell EMS was held to discuss general alcohol safety and the Medical Amnesty protocol. The program had group discussions, which focused on several important Panhellenic topics, such as upcoming recruitment changes. The Junior Panhellenic Council decided to focus on community outreach and service by organizing a school supplies drive and three educational visits to a local elementary school where the new members held presentations on individuality, health and wellness, and nature FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Sorority Brunch A new program established in the spring semester was a Sorority Brunch. The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. brought this idea to the MGLC Executive Board that would bring the sororities of MGLC and the PHC together to learn from one another. This program was very successful in the first attempt since approximately 75 women attended from the 21 sororities recognized on campus. Those in attendance were mixed together with women from other sororities and councils to answer questions that were placed on the table in order to break the ice. There were other activities throughout the morning that brought the women closer together while learning from one another. This program was held on Sunday, March 1, 2009 in celebration of Women s Herstory Month.

Delta Series In February the new members of the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council chapters gathered in Bailey Hall for educational programs covering hazing, social responsibility, leadership, unity and general membership education about Cornell s Greek community. Dr. Timothy Marchell, Director of Mental Health Initiatives at Gannett, was a guest speaker on the topic of hazing and hazing prevention FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Recruitment Phired Up: Dynamic Recruitment Workshop Approximately 60 students from both IFC and Panhellenic attended the recruitment workshop on Sunday, November 16, 2008, hosted by Josh Orendi of Phired Up Productions. Phired Up s Dynamic Recruitment workshop is a fun and interactive recruitment education program designed to help fraternities and sororities achieve a higher quantity and higher quality members. The workshop starts by helping participants master the four competencies of recruitment excellence; Skills development, Product knowledge, Audience understanding, and Motivation. The overarching theme of this program is to help chapters learn new and alternative recruitment techniques that have much less to do with the social side of these organizations, and more about what they truly have to offer and what they stand for. For more information about Phired Up, please visit IFC The Interfraternity Council (IFC) successfully completed the recruitment 2009 week with the percentage of acceptance increasing slightly this year with 756 registered and 509 signed bids compared to 772 registered and 506 signed bids from last year. The IFC continues to work to maintain adherence to the Recruitment Resolution and their Event Management Guidelines during the week. New Member Education Summit An event facilitated by the IFC s GAME (Greek Action on Member Education) Committee met on Saturday, November 22, 2008 to discuss value-based new member education and development. Todd Miner, from Cornell Outdoor Education, provided a presentation highlighting a number of programs that COE offers for fraternities and that can be funded by the Anthony Cashen 57, MBA 58 New Member Education Grant. Travis Apgar and members of the IFC Executive Board led discussions that underlined the dangers of hazing, the goals of new member education, methods to evaluate current new member programs, and ways to effectively incorporate a chapter s values into a new member education program. The group also collaborated to make a list of best practices and ideas to better regulate new member education as a system. MGLC The Multicultural Greek Letter Council (MGLC) planned a more formalized recruitment process for the spring 2009 semester. The formalized process included introducing the campus community to the purpose, history and ideals of the culturally-based organizations on campus. In addition, there was an opportunity for all students to meet the Greek members of MGLC at a social event during the day and a social party in the evening. There were 38 new members in fall 2008, and 51 new members in spring SPAM-A-LOT? Josh Onendi from Phired Up at the recruitment workshop. PHC This year s Panhellenic Council (PHC) sorority recruitment was bigger than ever; 649 women registered for recruitment, and 484 women matched with a chapter. The quota was set at 43 this year, compared to 38 in PHC retained women throughout recruitment very well with less withdrawals than past years. The chapter total was recalculated to average chapter size on Bid Day, and is now 152. Chapters are recruiting to that number.

Philanthropy and Community Service Cornell s Day of Caring More than 10,000 pounds of food and personal care items were collected during the September 11, 2008 Stephen E. Garner Day of Caring, sponsored by the United Way of Tompkins County. Contributing greatly to the success of this year s drive was the first-ever Cornell Greek Week Can Drive, a friendly competition among 12 teams comprised of several Cornell fraternity and sorority chapters, who vied to donate the largest number of cans of food. Cornell Greek community leaders, including Alison Ewing, Jason Georges, Jessica Kwon and Jason Shapiro, organized the drive. All together, the Greek community donated about 3,000 cans. Day of Demeter The annual day of service for the Cornell Greek community kicked off at Duffield Hall on Saturday, April 25, Svante Myrick 09, Ithaca Common Councilman, was the guest speaker who energized the participants to partake in community service. The fraternity and sorority members, led by the Tri-Council Vice-Presidents of University and Community Relations, Jason Shapiro (IFC), Stephanie Lai (MGLC) and Tricia Eliasinski (PHC), sponsored the community service initiative. This year the student leaders rose above and beyond previous years. Over 250 fraternity/sorority members performed service at local Ithaca locations such as Cayuga Nature Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Ellis Hollow Community Center, Ithaca Youth Bureau, the Greek Park area on campus adjacent to 14 South Avenue, the Museum of the Earth, Sabado Gigante, an annual street carnival held in the Commons and hosted by Lambda Upsilon Lambda fraternity, Salvation Army, Sciencenter, St. Paul s United Methodist Church, and the YMCA. We wish to thank our sponsors: Collegetown Bagel, Wegman s, and Red Jacket Orchards. Order of Omega Order of Omega and the Greek community co-sponsored Cornell s first Dance Marathon, Let s CU Dance in November 2008 with the Willard Straight Hall Student Union Board and CU Tonight. Modeled after the highly successful events at Penn State and Northwestern University, Cornell students and staff and Ithaca community members danced the night away, amidst campus and local entertainment to raise money for the Golisano Children s Hospital. The hospital is a division of the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, and an active member of the national Children s Miracle Network. The event raised $5,000 to support children and their families in the fight against an array of diseases and illnesses. Collegetown Cleanup Every Sunday throughout the academic year, chapters volunteer their membership to cleanup the Collegetown area. Members saw a need to live their values and take time out of their week to serve the local community. Chapter members meet outside of Collegetown Bagels and work to clean up the streets of Collegetown with trash bags, gloves, brooms and dustpans. The Cornell Greek community donated $2,100 for Dollar Makes a Difference; $2,500/300 hours for Greek Week Relay; 2,000 hours for Day of Demeter; and 400 hours for Trick-or-Treat Trail. For individual chapter philanthropy and community service, go to pages 18 and 19. Trick-or-Treat Trail A new tradition for the Greek community is to provide a safe and fun Halloween experience for children of all ages living in the Ithaca area. The second annual Trickor-Treat Trail links fraternity and sorority houses and a university community center together to provide one big route for parents to take their children trick-or-treating. The aim of the Trick-or-Treat Trail is to bridge relations with the local community while simultaneously serving an un-met need. The trail also ends at the Robert Purcell Community Center (RPCC) where those in costume could play games, eat candy, and enjoy kid-friendly Halloween films FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Members of Kappa Kappa Gamma

Greek Freak Step Show 2008 Cornell Greek Community Programs FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Leaders Retreat Chapter presidents from 70 fraternities and sororities, the 23 members of the Tri-Council Executive Board, OFSA staff, and alumni guests attended a Leaders Retreat on August 21, This retreat allows the student leaders to form relationships with each other, learn about priorities and deadlines, interact with alumni and staff members, and learn important lessons about leadership. The retreat was an important opportunity for the Robert G. Engel Associate Dean Travis Apgar and Fraternity Sorority Advisory Council Chair Tony Cashen 57, MBA 58 to share the Call 2 Action charge with the student leaders so that they could become active and engaged in the process of improving and enhancing our fraternity and sorority community. Greek Week Each year, the Greek community joins forces to create a week in early September that focuses on camaraderie, teamwork, philanthropy, service, and fun. The Tri-Council Vice- Presidents of Programming and the Greek Week Steering Committee executed events such as a barbeque for the entire Greek community featuring a Greek history test, a field day event featuring activities like a Four Square Competition, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on North Campus, and a canned good food drive in which over thousands of canned goods were provided to the United Way on behalf of the Greek community. In fall 2008 at the end of Greek Week, the Greek community gathered hundreds of members across Cornell in Barton Hall in a philanthopic event to break a Guinness World Record: the World s Longest Relay. The record was broken with 824 participants from Cornell, the fraternity and sorority community, and Ithaca residents who carried the baton in a leg of the relay. The event raised over $2,000 for the United Way of Tompkins County. Emerging Leaders Retreat The Emerging Leaders Retreat is an annual retreat funded by an endowment by Bob Selander 72. One representative from each of our 70 fraternities and sororities were invited to attend this day long experience in the spring semester. The event was held at the Ithaca Hilton Garden Inn. Participants build relationships with each other, have in depth conversations about the fraternity/sorority community, brainstorm, and discuss current issues in an open forum. Likewise, the participants also attend a panel of seasoned student leaders to hear their advice and best practices. Laura Sanders, Assistant Dean of Students in OFSA, facilitated a leadership lesson focused on Patrick Lencioni s book The Five Temptations of a CEO. The students also engaged in a conversation and experiential exercise about what it means to be a part of a values-based organization facilitated by Kara Miller, Assistant Dean of Students. Greek Freak Step Show This annual traditional Step Show held on April 18, 2009, performed for the Cornell Community at large, was promoted during Cornell University s Diversity Hosting Weekend (DHW), as a means of entertaining and exposing prospective students to one of Cornell University s most prominent side of student life, the Cornell Greek Community. It is said that the rich tradition of the collegiate experience comes with the spirit of Greek Letter Organizations, which is why the Multicultural Greek Letter Council at Cornell University held its annual Greek Freak Step Show Competition at the State Street Theatre of Ithaca, NY. Each participating Organization had about 13 minutes to perform for the attending crowd. With over 500 people in attendance and a total of 10 Organizations participating, this year s step competition proved to be a successful one; attendees cheered for their favorite organizations and enjoyed the whole spirit of this cultural competition. In addition to the aforementioned, all proceeds earned through tickets sales of the event were then awarded in the form of multiple MGLC Sponsored Book Scholarships to graduating high school seniors in and within the Ithaca area. The winners of the Step Competition were: 1st Place: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Maryland All-Star Step Team 2nd Place: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc Mu Gamma Chapter 3rd Place: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Beta Epsilon Chapter Participating organizations also included Phi Beta Sigma (Kappa Xi Chapter), Pi Delta Psi (SJU Colony), Alpha Phi Alpha (Alpha Chapter), Lambda Pi Chi (Alpha Chapter), Lambda Theta Phi (Chi Chapter), Lambda Theta Alpha (Gamma Phi Chapter), and Kappa Phi Lambda (Iota Chapter).

A.D. White Leadership Conference The 12th annual leadership conference was planned by the Tri-Council Executive Vice-Presidents for the newly elected executive board members of our fraternities and sororities on campus. Alumni and staff also attend as guests and expert facilitators. Though the event was held on Valentine s Day, we saw a record number of attendees, approximately 450. Ed Gerety, a nationally acclaimed keynote speaker, began the day by teaching our students about the responsibility they have as Brothers and Sisters in the fraternity/sorority community. Students then attended breakout sessions to discuss the Call 2 Action topics of hazing prevention, social responsibility, and academic enhancement. There were also trainings offered for very specific officers, such as presidents, new member educators, social chairs, house managers, and stewards. This program exists in part due to the kindness of our sponsors: Sciarabba Walker & Company, LLC, Shaw Law Firm, Stewart Howe Alumni Service, and Student Management Corporation (SMC). Greek Awards The 12th Annual Greek Awards Ceremony took place in the Memorial Room of Willard Straight Hall on April 26, 2009, and started off with Susan Murphy 73, Vice President of Student and Academic Services as the keynote speaker. She challenged the Greek leaders in the room to strive for the betterment of the community and create positive change. Nearly 300 members of the Greek community including students, faculty, staff and alumni were in attendance. Individuals and chapters were recognized for their accomplishments and dedicated support to the fraternity and sorority community. The event ended with a reception in the Art Gallery catered by Cornell Dining and featured the jazz ensemble, Seafood Platter. A list of chapter and individual awards can be found on pages 14 and 15. Homecoming 2008 Homecoming On Saturday, September 27, 2008, the Cornell Greek community held their annual Homecoming Tailgate in the Bartels parking lot. Chapters registered a spot where they were permitted to grill out and relax with their alumni members who came back for the Homecoming festivities. The Homecoming Tailgate was greeted by rain for most of the morning, but that did not stop many of the chapters from coming out and celebrating with their brothers and sisters. Many of the chapters held Homecoming events at their chapter houses to reconnect with alumni. Faculty Appreciation The Cornell Greek community honored faculty from the seven colleges who have made a positive impact on their learning experience and who have inspired members of the Greek community at the annual Faculty Appreciation Ceremony held on October 28, The keynote speaker was Dr. William Fry, Dean of Faculty. Five Greek students were also recognized and received Greek Scholar of the Year Awards for their academic achievements. For a list of Faculty Awards, go to page FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: HIGHLIGHTS Greek members at the Leaders Retreat

Alumni Highlights Outreach activities occurred during the past academic year in an ongoing effort to support our alumni volunteers and inform all Greek alumni as to the current state of fraternities and sororities on campus. The success of our Greek organizations is directly linked to the volunteer support and financial resources of our alumni and friends. Alumni Organizations Alumni Interfraternity Council The Alumni Interfraternity Council (AIFC) reviews and provides counsel to fraternities about practices related to technology, social policies, and alumni volunteer recruitment. Council Officers include: FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Council Meetings The Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Council (FSAC) serves to advise the Vice President for Student and Academic Services, the Dean of Students, and the Robert G. Engel Associate Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs on broad matters of policy and planning for recognized fraternities and sororities at Cornell University. The alumni, in cooperation with the administration, students, and faculty work to assure that the Cornell Greek community remains healthy and strong in providing a unique living learning experience among peer institutions. The work of this collaborative Council over the last academic year proved invaluable. In addition to the traditional meeting each academic semester, several FSAC members served on the Call 2 Action Taskforce, providing alumni leadership, guidance, and support to the undergraduate Tri-council leaders as they addressed critical issues within the system around social responsibility, productive new member education and intake practices, and academic excellence. The support of the FSAC makes it possible for the Greek community to take innovative approaches to long-standing challenges, and further increase valuable alumni and student interaction and mentorship. All Greek Alumni Homecoming Reception As has become tradition, each year the Alumnae Panhellenic Council (APAC) and Alumni Interfraternity Council (AIFC) host a reception for all alumni who are members of a fraternity or sorority, welcoming those folks to Cornell Homecoming Weekend. This past year we added the newly forming Alumni Multicultural Greek Letter Council (AMGLC) to the list of hosts, truly encouraging this to become an event inclusive of all Cornell Greeks. The Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students Kent Hubbell 67 (Alpha Delta Phi), Tony Cashen 57, MBA 58 (Delta Upsilon) who serves as Chair of the FSAC, and the Robert G. Cory Wright 95 (Pi Kappa Phi) Alumnae Panhellenic Advisory Council The Alumnae Panhellenic Advisory Council (APAC) exists to keep sorority alumnae advisors at Cornell aware of current trends, to promote and be an advocate for the sorority experience, and to improve the sorority image on the Cornell campus. Council Officers include: President, Donna Green Barsotti (Kappa Delta) Vice President Membership Recruitment, Lisa Everts 92 (Chi Omega) Vice President Finance and House Corporations, Barb Kathan Verna (Delta Phi Epsilon) Vice President Volunteer Recruitment and Development, Lauren Mossotti-Kline (Gamma Phi Beta) Alumni Multicultural Greek Letter Council Update The alumni Multicultural Greek Letter Council (AMGLC) continues to organize and build an alumni base around the region. Frank Wilkinson 84 serves as President. On March 25, 2009, the AMGLC successfully held an after-work fundraiser in NYC. The event attracted well over 100 Cornell alumni and supporters of the AMGLC community. For more information on AMGLC, please contact Frank at f.b.wilkinson@gmail.com. Trustee-Council Greek Breakfast In October 2008 the OFSA had the pleasure to once again organize a breakfast for all Greek affiliated Trustees and members of the University Council. The officers, members, and alumni of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity did a wonderful job of hosting the event at Hillcrest. The approximately twenty-five attendees of the event participated in conversations with student leaders, Cashen Mentors, and administrators. REUNION 2009: Over 1,500 Greek alumni returned to campus for Reunion, June 5 and 6.

Evidence clearly shows that our highest performing Cornell chapters are those whose undergraduates and alumni follow best practices in the cooperative management of their chapters. ~ Anthony B. Cashen Best Practices for Alumni Organizations Greek organizations are an integral part of Cornell s student residential living-learning system. Elevated expectations for positive educational and social performance, changing times, and a challenging economy, require that they must adapt to remain viable. To do so, alumni organizations should institute best practices that have emerged through the efforts of individual alumni chapter officers, Cornell s Chapters of Excellence program, and consulting/management firms such as Stewart Howe Alumni Service. Applying best practices in fund raising increases alumni involvement that benefits Cornell while supporting individual chapter operations. Sigma Alpha Epsilon s (SAE) turnaround is a great example of a best-practices success story. SAE saw annual gifts double, then triple, after combining volunteer efforts with professional consulting and management services. Alpha Delta Phi s program had a similar result, more than doubling annual giving. These successes were due to the adoption of best practices: optimizing house financial management, adopting a regular communications and giving program, organizing volunteer efforts, hosting alumni events, planning for fundraising, and complementing internal efforts with outside resources. Visioning sessions help create new strategies for growth. Phoning events, or thank-a-thons, build donor loyalty. An effective communications program follows a reliable annual cycle, usually beginning with a fall mailing. At least two newsletters should follow, with dues or gift reminder mailings, lapsed-donor mailings, and effective donor-acknowledgment procedures. An up-to-date, feature-rich website is another critical component. Database-driven websites feature online giving and alumni look-up functionality. (with solicitations) may complement paper mailings. Creating alumni networks now will help create a culture of giving. Stewart Howe Alumni Service For almost 130 years, Stewart Howe Alumni Service (based right here in Ithaca) has provided back office support to alumni organizations at colleges with strong Greek communities. Stewart Howe serves mostly nonprofit groups, including almost 200 Greek chapters at more than 30 schools, as well as foundations and other education- based groups. The firm provides support and volunteer management, as well as a variety of resources for organizational infrastructure. Stewart Howe s assistance adds consistency and discipline, building greater alumni support and interest, helping manage precious volunteer time, ensuring the best use of limited resources FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS Sigma Alpha Epsilon brothers on retreat

Undergraduate, Alumni, and Faculty/Staff Recognition FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: UNDERGRADUATE, ALUMNI, AND FACULTY/STAFF RECOGNITION In a community where many stand out for academic, social, and philanthropic accomplishments, it is important to recognize those who go above and beyond expectations. Throughout the year, the undergraduate councils along with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs seek to highlight the accomplishments of our faculty, students, alumni, and administrators. The following section recognizes these recipients. 16 FRATERNITY AND SORORITY ADVISORY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT: UNDERGRADUATE, ALUMNI, AND FACULTY/STAFF RECOGNITION Dyson Undergraduate Scholarships An opportunity for fraternities and sororities to recognize outstanding undergraduate leaders was created in part by University Trustee and Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Council member John Dyson 65. John, in conjunction with the University Scholarship Campaign, matched gifts toward the establishment of scholarships that relieve portions of recipients work requirements and provide significant grants. It was out of this generous offer that the program, informally known as the Dyson Scholarship Challenge, was created. Alumni raised a minimum of the necessary $37,500 to establish or enhance a scholarship endowment fund for the chapters listed below. More than $2.9 million was raised to establish 26 new scholarships for fraternity and sorority leaders Dyson Scholarship Recipients (alphabetical by chapter): Alpha Delta Phi Tradition Fellowship Colm Kelleher Alpha Phi Cornell Tradition Fellowship Julianna Valle Velez Alpha Tau Omega Ralph Henn 69 Scholarship Austin Helman Alpha Zeta A. 18 Kitchen Safety & Sanitation The OFSA Kitchen Safety and Sanitation program reached a major milestone this year. A generous alumni gift enabled us to offer nationally accredited food safety education, free of charge, to all 48 sorority and fraternity cooks. As of April, 2009, 42 cooks have earned their ServSafe certification. This is an important first step toward providing safe food to our fraternities and sororities. In addition to the ServSafe classes, the alumni gift has covered supplemental food safety education and resources for many chapters this year. All classes and resources are provided by Christine Applegate, OFSA Kitchen Safety and Sanitation Educator. Awareness has also been raised by making food safety a category in the Chapter End of Year report. Many chapters responded with well thought out food safety programs. The 47 chapter stewards have also been encouraged to take the ServSafe for Steward s Course which provides a comprehensive food safety education aimed towards the particular needs of Greek stewards. As of April, 2009, 20 stewards have gone through the course. An additional 14 stewards have full ServSafe certification. In order to advance the cause of food safety in the chapters, the Steward s Course will again be offered in the school year. 21 Judicial Summary The judicial system that governs fraternities and sororities is two-fold. The primary process, the Greek Judicial Board is self-governed. Council officers partner with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs to resolve cases of alleged chapter misconduct. The secondary process is facilitated by the Fraternity and Sorority Review Board and is the administrative judicial process for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Cases involving allegations of individual misconduct are referred to the Office of the Judicial Administrator. Below is a summary of the judicial complaints compiled by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. This summary includes complaints that were and/or are being processed through the fraternity and sorority judicial system.
