3 Welcome to the University of Northern Iowa! On behalf of all of our Greek letter organizations, thank you for your interest. The UNI mission is to provide transformative learning experiences that inspire students to embrace challenge, engage in critical inquiry and creative thought, and contribute to society. This mission is achieved through a variety of activities on campus, from the classroom, to internships and study abroad, to getting involved in campus organizations. Greek membership creates countless opportunities for learning through each individual chapter, the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, and the organizations large alumni networks. Scholarship, fellowship, leadership, and service are the values we embody as a Greek community. Our Greek organizations develop individuals into leaders and instill values that promote personal development. Throughout the years, our Greek members significantly influence our campus, positively impact the surrounding communities, and make a difference in the world every day. We are proud of our Greek organizations and value their multitude of contributions to the campus and community. I invite you to explore our Greek system and discover the great opportunities they will provide. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Congratulations on joining the UNI family. We look forward to being a part of your success! Sincerely, Dr. Leslie Williams Dean of Students

4 Four Pillars Fraternity & Sorority Life provides UNI students with meaningful student engagement experiences, develops leadership skills and contributes to student learning. The FSL community promotes living by the Four Pillars which unite all Greek-letter organizations: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Friendship.

5 Scholarship Academic excellence is a vital aspect of fraternity and sorority membership. All chapters require a minimum GPA to be considered for membership. Initiated members must maintain that GPA in order to remain active and in good standing. Chapters also provide support and resources to new members which can help them transition academically from high school to college: + Educational programs and workshops + Academic Learning Center partnership + Tutoring programs + Proctored study sessions Service Service is an essential pillar of fraternity and sorority involvement at UNI. Chapters sponsor a variety of fundraising events called philanthropies for both national and local charitable organizations. Chapters also come together as a community to participate in campus-wide philanthropy and service events such as Dance Marathon, MLK Day of Service, blood drives and much more! In 2016, fraternities and sororities raised over $30,000 to contribute to Dance Marathon s fundraising total of $370, In the last year, UNI Fraternity & Sorority Life contributed more than 6,000 hours of service and donated over $50,000 to various organizations, including: View each chapter s average GPA at uni.edu/involvement/fsl. Leadership + Ronald McDonald House + Autism Speaks + House of Hope + American Heart Association + Cedar Bend Humane Society + Girls on the Run + American Red Cross Developing leaders for life is an important part of Greek involvement. Members have the opportunity to hold executive positions within their chapters and on governing councils. Additionally, many students regularly hold leadership positions in a variety of student organizations across campus. Greek students can be found on Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG), Dance Marathon Executive Board, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Connecting Alumni to Students (CATS), Orientation Leaders and Cat Crew. Friendship Joining a Greek organization is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond the boundaries of ordinary friendships. Bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood provide UNI Greeks with a home away from home, mentorship, career networking and a sense of community at a large university.

12 Chapter Housing All current chapters at UNI have housing and members have the opportunity to live-in should they choose to do so. Typically, upperclassmen live in the houses and most chapters require specific chapter leaders to live in the house during their term, such as the Chapter President or other members of the Chapter Executive Team. The houses are open to all members with common areas to study, socialize or relax in between classes. Special events and house meals also occur at the houses. The houses also contain artifacts, awards and memorabilia that are special to the chapter. House tours will be part of the fall recruitment schedule for both fraternities and sororities, but parents and students can schedule tours by ing SORORITIES Chapter FRATERNITIES House Max Occupancy Address Ownership Alpha Delta Pi Olive St. Private Alpha Xi Delta College St. Private Alpha Phi W. 22nd St. University Gamma Phi Beta Merner Ave. University Chapter House Max Occupancy Address Ownership Kappa Sigma College St. Private Pi Kappa Alpha W. 22nd St. University Sigma Alpha Epsilon Sigma Phi Epsilon W. 23rd St. Private W. 15 Fraternity & Sorority Life Involvement Opportunities ORDER OF OMEGA Order of Omega is a national leadership honor society for members of fraternity and sorority organizations. It recognizes juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leadership, involvement within the respective fraternity and sorority organizations, and service within the local community. Members are selected from the top 3% of students within fraternity and sorority life at each institution. The Gamma Phi chapter of the Order of Omega was founded at the University of Northern Iowa on April 16th, 1981 and continues to flourish today. GREEK WEEK Greek Week is a week-long celebration each spring within the fraternity and sorority life community at UNI. Members of the Greek community work together to plan a week full of programming, friendly competition, and community service events. Some events include: LIP SYNC, God/ Goddess Talent Show, Greek Olympics, Game Show Night, community services events, and more! IFC/CPH ACADEMY The IFC/CPH Academy is a North American Interfraternity Conference and National Panhellenic Conference joint program designed to provide hands-on training and tools to ensure the success of the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and individual council officers. Members of the University of Northern Iowa councils attend this conference annually which allows them to focus and engage their leaders for the betterment of the community. CHAPTER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES Each chapter in the Fraternity and Sorority Life community at UNI has opportunities for individual members to attend different leadership conferences. These conferences are held at regional or national levels and provide many opportunities for membership development. UNI GREEK LEADERS RETREAT The UNI Greek Leaders Retreat is a day long event that takes place right before the start of the spring semester. Leaders from the fraternity and sorority governing councils as well as chapter executive teams meet to learn more about the community, develop leadership and teambuilding skills, and how to support each other.

16 HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BE A MEMBER OF A CHAPTER? Being in a fraternity or sorority does require a payment of dues. This money is used to fund the operations, social events and programming for the chapter. It also allows the inter/national organization to continue to provide resources and support for the chapter. Dues vary between chapters. Contact individual chapters for more info. HOW MUCH TIME DOES CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP TAKE? Everyone is different when it comes to time management. Many Greek students are able to manage chapter responsibilities, jobs or internships, academics and involvement in other campus organizations. The time commitment for joining a chapter varies, but all chapters have weekly chapter meetings and other mandatory events throughout the year that are planned out well in advance. FAQ frequently asked questions AS A FAMILY MEMBER, HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY STUDENT? Students need support throughout the new member recruitment and intake process. You can empower your student by encouraging them to gather information and ask questions before they make the decision to join a Greek organization. Fraternities and sororities are different on every campus. You may have a Greek affiliation or opinions about Greek life. Encourage your student to form their own opinions and choose the group that they are most comfortable with joining. Be a good listener. Most of the time your student just needs someone who is willing to listen to the ups and downs of their experience. Talk to your student beforehand about financial obligations and time commitment.

17 WHAT WILL I GET FROM GREEK LIFE THAT I WOULD NOT GET FROM ANY OTHER STUDENT ORGANIZATION? At UNI, we take great pride in all that fraternity/sorority membership has to offer. Greek membership provides students the chance to enhance their college experience. Unlike other student organizations, fraternities and sororities are values-based organizations and expect their members to uphold the values established by their founders. Joining a fraternity or sorority will allow students to develop leadership skills, achieve academically, and make a difference through philanthropic or hands-on service. Membership offers a sense of belonging and provides students with a home away from home. I VE HEARD THAT FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES HAZE THEIR MEMBERS. IS THAT TRUE? University of Northern Iowa has a zero tolerance policy for those who allow and/ or facilitate hazing activities. Additionally, each chapter abides by strict antihazing policies from their inter/national organization. All University of Northern Iowa students and student organizations must adhere to the Student Conduct Code. The university defines hazing as: An act that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or that destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of intimidation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization. Participation or cooperation by the person(s) being hazed does not excuse the violation. Failing to intervene, to prevent, to discourage, and/or failing to report those acts may also constitute hazing. Violation of this university policy may result in disciplinary actions against the student(s) and or organization(s) charged with such acts. For more information regarding university discipline procedures, visit: In addition to university sanctions, a person who commits an act of hazing may be subject to criminal charges under section of the State Code of Iowa. All members will be provided with a copy of this policy. Hazing may be reported on campus to the Student Involvement Center, the Office of the Dean of Students, or UNI Public Safety and anonymously by calling NOT-HAZE.
