1 To Principals, Guidance Counselor, Teachers and Educational Leaders, Given the rising cost of higher education, many college-bound students struggle to afford the cost of books and supplies necessary each semester. Across the country, the average cost of books of courses can exceed $350 per semester. These expenses are often unmet through financial aid, forcing our students to work or depend on family contributions. Many borrow, or simply go without necessary textbooks for part of the semester, derailing the efforts of our best students. For over 100 years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has helped support and encourage both college aspiration and high achievement among young men. Providence area Alpha men continue to contribute to this great legacy through mentorship, scholarship, teaching, leadership and service in our community. To that end, we invite college bound men in the Providence, RI area to apply for the to help offset the cost of higher education for college-bound men. The Scholarship The LeCount Scholarship provides recipients with a total of $2000. The scholarship is divided into four installments of $500 distributed prior to each semester. LeCount Scholarship winners will be mentored by members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. throughout all four college years and Alpha men will serve as integral resources and advocates throughout this important period. About Joseph G. LeCount The scholarship honors Joseph G. LeCount, the first African American attorney registered to practice law in the state of Rhode Island. Brother LeCount went on to become the most influential civil rights leader in Rhode Island, responsible for ending segregation in the state s theatres and public establishments. In 1979, Brother LeCount helped establish the Mu Theta Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in Providence, RI. Thank you for your attention to this important cause. 2 Requirements and Application REQUIREMENTS 1. Applicants must be high school senior, African American men/men of color currently enrolled in a Rhode Island public or private high school. 2. Applicants must have a B average (80%) or better. Applicants from high schools that do not grant letter or numerical grades must be considered (or ranked) in the top 50% of the graduating class. Recommendations should verify this ranking. APPLICATION 1. An official mid-year transcript from your high school in a sealed envelope. 2. Copy of the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid report (FAFSA). 3. Copy of the applicant s Letter of Acceptance to an accredited college or university beginning in the summer or fall of the current year. 4. Type-written (max 500 words) essay on The Meaning of a College Education. The essay should highlight the applicant s career goals, outstanding academic work, community service activities, and extracurricular activities. *A related College Essay may be substituted and/or modified* 5. Three letters of recommendation/reference. References may be provided by teachers, ministers, counselors, employers, or community members (relatives cannot be listed as references). 6. Recent Photograph of the applicant (5 x7 or 8 ½ x 11 ). The application will be rated on appearance, clarity, academic achievement, community involvement, strength of the essay and references. Please print or type all application information. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND DISBURSEMENT The LeCount Scholarship winner will receive a total of $2000. The scholarship is divided into four installments of $500 distributed prior to each semester for four consecutive semesters, provided the winner(s) maintain a B average (3.0 GPA). LeCount Scholarship winners who choose to remain in contact will be mentored by members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. throughout all four college years. Alpha men will serve as integral resources and advocates throughout this important period. In order to receive the scholarship, young men must: 1. Submit a copy of the semester s registration prior to the opening of the school year; 2. Submit grades at the end of each semester to the MTL chapter designee; 3. Remain in good academic and social standing at the college or university; and 4. Maintain regular contact by , telephone, or in person with the MTL designated brother.

4 History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African- Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were developed at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, the organization recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by people of color. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. Du Bois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others.
