1 Cooperative Extension Service Pike County 148 Trivette Drive Pikeville KY (606) (800) Fax: (606) extension.ca.uky.edu Kentucky State Fair I will be making two trips to the Kentucky State Fair this month, one to judge 4-H Needlework projects before the fair opens and the second to work in the FCS Extension booth in the Main Street section, promoting UK Extension, our Plate it Up recipes and answering questions! There is always a lot to see and do at Food Preservation We still have a few spaces left in our last two remaining food preservation classes. Call if you re interested and get registered. Each class is $5.00. August 9 at 10:00 a.m., we will be pressure canning green beans. September 1 at 10:00 a.m., we will be canning Basket Class The next basket class is scheduled for August 18 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The cost will be $20-$30 depending on the size and reed used. New the fair. Best of luck to all our Pike County 4-Hers competing and exhibiting as well as to the Pikeville High Junior Chef Team who will compete for the state title on August 20! Fair tickets can be obtained at tomatoes. All food preservation classes are intensive and handson experiences. Participants do the canning under supervision after a short training class. Spaces are very limited. weavers need to contact Sue Jennings at and pay a $20 deposit before the class date. 2 Pag e 2 Beginner s Breads I ve scheduled (what I think will be) one final set of Beginner s Breads classes for this fall. I m not likely to offer this again for quite some time. If you are interested and haven t made time for it, now s your chance. Classes will be Tuesday evenings September 13, 20, 27 and October 4 at 5:30 p.m. We usually finish in 2 hours or less. The classes are offered as a series; you must take all 4 courses. During classes we will make biscuits and scones, cinnamon rolls, various shapes of dinner rolls, and finally yeast loaf breads. This is a very hands -on class and makes you eligible for the Advanced Bread Making series I offer. Please call to register and pay within seven days to reserve your spot! AARP Driver Course The next AARP 55 Alive Safe Driver Course is scheduled for Thursday, September 22. We are currently accepting registrations. The course is from 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Registration is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Space is limited. You may call us at to register. Ovarian Screening The next Ovarian Screening trips are in September. We will leave the office at 8:00 a.m. Those registered are: Thursday, September 8, 2016 One appointment available. October Sewing Workshop The Northeast Area Master Volunteers in Clothing are offering a multi-day sewing workshop in Lawrence County in October. Classes look great and you can be there in a little over an hour from Pikeville. A flyer is included in this newsletter for you.

5 L e a r n i n g, L e a d i n g, S e r v i n g P i k e C o u n t y E x t e n s i o n H o m e m a k e r C O N N E C T I O N Homemaker Council The Pike County Homemaker Council meeting will be on Friday, August 12 beginning at 10:00 a.m. We will be making plans for all our fall events, discussing new fundraising ideas and having a great time! Come support your new county officer team and chairman too! New Homemaker yearbooks, officer materials, etc. will all be available that day. Lunch will be potluck so bring your favorite dish to share. September Lesson The first homemaker lesson of the year is Economical Entrees on Thursday, August 25 at 10:00 a.m. at the Extension Office. We will learn creative and money-saving ways to make your main dishes really special. Samples of several dishes will be available for taste-testing. Every club needs to be represented for training. Feel free to bring guests or invite potential homemaker members. The monthly lesson is a great place to recruit new members! 6 Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association for Kentucky Extension Homemakers are a great TEAM!! Our team co-captains, Ms. E. Go and Ms. Way to Go, are eager to increase our membership. Our game plan is to increase membership by 1,000 members by January 1, As a team, we can make this happen! Each county is challenged to increase membership by 3 members each year for the next 3 years! We re striving for a NET gain of 3 members each year, so any loss in membership will need to be recovered through new members AND your membership should INCREASE by at least 3 members. This is our SMART goal for membership Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. Come on, KEHA!!! Show your spirit and let s increase membership by at least 1,000 by 2019! We ll keep score for the next three years, and celebrate our champions. Here s how: Any county increasing membership by at least 3 will be recognized at the KEHA State Meeting each year. (Remember: Your tipoff will be the number of members in your county as of December 31, Your challenge is to increase that number by at least 3 in 2016, 2017 and 2018.) Any county that achieves 3 for 3 - makes the goal of a net gain of at least 3 members in 2016, 2017 and will be entered in a drawing for a $500 prize to be awarded at the 2019 KEHA State Meeting. Ms. E. Go and Ms. Way to Go will continue as our co-captains. The county with the greatest increase in members (by percentage) each year will receive Ms. E. Go and $300.
