1 ON THE HORIZON September 2015 Volume 55 Number 8 NEW MEMBERSHIP MEETING PLACE September 16, 2015 at 1930 (7:30 PM) Come and check out our new digs The Bowman Restaurant at 9306 Harford Rd, Parkville, MD Our feature speaker this week will be P/C Ron Knight, SN the Canvas Geezer. Ron will be giving a presentation on all things canvas and will welcome your questions on material selection, care and design. COMMANDER I have to congratulate the entire squadron for the fantastic crab feast weekend. The weather was perfect. It simply could not have been better if we had ordered it from a menu. Many thanks to Executive Officer Douglas Riley, AP and all his hard working helpers. The crab feast itself was as good as ever. The beer was cold, the crabs were tasty and full and the band was rocking. Check out our facebook pages for plenty of pictures from the whole weekend. The marina was very accommodating as usual and we even were invited to a sock hop Saturday night. Saturday evening after everything else we had to soldier on into town for the traditional ice cream after the crab feast. Well maybe really wasn t that hard but we did endeavor to persevere. Sunday morning s pitch in breakfast at the marina featured a fantastic view of Rock Hall harbor and food that was way too good to pass up no matter how much we overdid it the day before. The only complaint about the weekend is that I have to wait another year for the next crab feast. After the crab feast and Labor day we know the season is winding down. In a few days we have the District 5 Fall Festival, sail regatta and fishing contest. That is always a lot of fun and if you get a chance to drop in, even at the last minute, please do so. The weekend of September 18-20th we re heading to Havre de Grace for the last cruise of summer. This will be a fun weekend getaway and very drivable if you prefer. Either way the squadron fee for weekend activities are the same price -$5 per boat or car. Once the boating season winds down there is still a lot going on. The District 5 fall conference runs October 30th through November 1st. This year our friends from Absecon Island are hosting it up in Cherry Hill, NJ. Yes that s still District 5 territory. Friday night features a Halloween costume party. You don t want to end up in the Sourpuss look-a-like contest by mistake so be sure to wear a good costume. In spite of all the fun we ll be having the primary focus of the fall conference is education and how to improve our outreach, teaching AND learning skills. It s a very important part of what we do and I encourage you to making a weekend of it. I m looking forward to seeing EVERYONE at the new meeting place this month! Respectfully submitted, Commander John L. Hall, AP Our New Meeting Place The Bowman Restaurant on Harford Road We will have a meeting room reserved from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday September 16th Those of us planning to eat should plan to arrive around 6:00 p.m. and we ll order from the menu. Those not planning on eating may arrive at any time but the meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. The best parking is on the left of the building and then enter through the double doors on the side. The Bowman Restaurant is located at 9306 Harford Rd, Parkville, MD 21234, just OUTSIDE the Beltway, on the lefthand side as you head north across from the CVS Drugstore. 1

EXECUTIVE OFFICER Staying Alive Last month, I wrote about boating safety and the important work of the Dundalk Sail and Power Squadron in educating recreational boaters about how to stay safe, and alive, in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. This month, I want to say a few words about keeping the Squadron safe and alive. As highlighted throughout this edition of On The Horizon, we are moving our Squadron meetings from Baltimore Yacht Club on Sue Creek to The Bowman s Restaurant on Harford Road. In advising Commodore Penczek of our pending move, we explained in a recent letter: Our decision is no reflection whatsoever upon BYC or the friendly reception we have always received during the 4½ years that Sue Island has been our home. Indeed, for the many Squadron members who belong to BYC, this is a difficult move. Our membership, however, is predominantly from the middle part of Baltimore County, and we are hopeful that a more central location, with a year-round dining room, will help us to attract and retain new members. We expressed our hope that the Squadron s close relationship with BYC would continue with vessel safety checks for boats in the Basin, honor guards when needed, and educational programs during Week On The Island. We also know that our numbers have not grown significantly since moving to BYC; Middle River is a very long drive for many of us; the electric gate can be off putting to prospective new members; and the climb up the hill well worth the view once you get there can be a challenge! We are also a very sociable group that enjoys our dinners together which, at The Bowman s Restaurant, will be available all year round. Change can be difficult, especially for those of us who love BYC, but if the Squadron is to stay alive, and to grow, and to do the important work of the United States Power Squadrons, we need a more central and accessible location. We are hopeful that our new meeting place will be as pleasant and accommodating as our former home on beautiful Sue Creek. Respectfully submitted, Lt/C Douglas B. 5 D/5 FALL EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE 30 OCTOBER 1 NOVEMBER CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL, CHERRY HILL, NJ Get ready for a ghoulish weekend 30 October to 1 November at the District 5 Fall Conference. Absecon Island with help from Kingsway & Delsea are planning a ghostly experience beginning with the Friday night Halloween Party. There will be non-stop dancing. Get your costumes ready as prizes will be given in several categories (to be named later). On the serious side, the Educational Conference at Cherry Hill will begin a new look. Yes, we will continue to focus on our educational activities. However, we will introduce several new topics to help SEO s, instructors and other interested squadron members promote boating education. First, we are going to have an all hands session to highlight important information and provide tools and techniques to help squadrons educate. For example, we will present updates to the educational program, courses and seminars in one session open to all that were introduced last fall. Want to learn more about marketing our courses? Stf/C Paul Mermelstein, SN of the national marketing committee will give you many ideas and thoughts on how to do it better. Next, we will present topics and seminars on familiar subjects, but with a different perspective. Are your seminars not delivering the right information? Come learn what makes a good seminar for your audience. Cdr Mike King, AP of the Wilmington Squadron will tell you how to combine education with your summer cruising. These topics and others will be introduced for the first time at this conference. Come to Cherry Hill this Halloween to learn and socialize with your United States Power Squadrons family from District 5! D/Lt/C Chuck Wells, SN D/5 Educational Officer 5

7 United States Power Squadrons : A Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador NOAA/NWS Mission, the Mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its National Weather Service (NWS) includes the following: Predicting changes in weather and climate and sharing that information with others. Protecting life and property and enhancing the economy. With the vision of building resilient communities and economies that can adjust to change. The vision recognizes that it is not enough to just disseminate short and long term weather forecasts. In addition, the recipients of such forecasts must be prepared to take appropriate action in other words to build what NOAA/NWS calls a Weather-Ready Nation. Weather Ready Nation NOAA however knows that building a Weather-Ready Nation requires more than the government alone. It needs all sorts of nongovernmental entities that can facilitate better community, business, and personal decision making. Everyone government, for-profit companies, nonprofit organizations, and individual citizens must be involved in an effort to move people and society as a whole toward heeding warnings, knowing what action to take and taking it. The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative is NOAA s effort to formally recognize NOAA partners that are improving the nation s readiness and responsiveness to extreme weather and water events. In addition to various U.S., state, county, city and town agencies, WRN Ambassadors include a diverse assortment of companies and organizations. Some examples are AccuWeather, The Weather Channel, the American Meteorological Society, the American Red Cross, a large number of radio/tv stations, universities, and the U.S. Sailing Association. USPS has joined their ranks. USPS Commitment to be officially recognized as a WRN Ambassador, USPS has committed to: Promoting Weather-Ready Nation messages and themes to its stakeholders; Engaging with NOAA personnel on potential collaboration opportunities; Sharing success stories of preparedness and resiliency; Serving as an example by educating employees on workplace preparedness. As NOAA/NWS has recognized, the USPS primary contribution will be its continuing efforts to make recreational boaters weather wise knowledgeable about weather and weather forecasting with the purpose of improving situational awareness and the quality of preparedness and decision making. Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador Logo to recognize USPS as a WRN Ambassador, USPS, its national organization, districts and squadrons have been authorized by NOAA to use the WRN Ambassador Logo. All USPS districts and squadrons are encouraged to do so. Please note: Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador and the Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador logo are trademarks of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, used with NOAA s permission. NOAA authorizes the use of the WRN Ambassador logo or service mark in printing, recording, or electronic storage media (e.g., pamphlets, logos, badges, decals, signs, video, audio, web page, and other paraphernalia or medium) by Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors to identify them as affiliated with the NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative. 7
8 SECRETARY S REPORT Please send me any changes for the roster, DB2000 (the United States Power Squadrons database), and the On the Horizon mailing list. Send to stuartnewborn@gmail.com so the Squadron will have your current information. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our Squadron s meetings and events! Respectfully submitted, Lt/C Stuart Newborn, S Secretary TREASURER S REPORT The squadrons finances are in good shape. We have made our annual contribution of one dollar per member to the USPS Education Fund. This fund is used to help develop new and improved educational courses and materials for USPS. All bills have been paid and we have more cash in the bank than at this time last year. Part of this increase is due to well run and well attended squadron fund raising events like the Wurst cookout and the Crab feast. Please consider how important these fund raisers are to the squadron each year when considering if you can help with them or attend them. Respectfully submitted, Lt/C Richard D. Bussey, P Treasurer ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER It s hard to believe that September is already here, and the summer drawing to a close. Susan and I have had many wonderful experiences sailing this summer, most recently the Squadron s Crab Feast in Rock Hall, and are still looking forward to a few more. Notable among these are the District 5 Fall Festival and Sail Regatta, and the Squadron s Last Cruise of Summer. The Fall Festival and Sail Regatta will be at our boating home, Maryland Yacht Club on the weekend of September 11-13, and the Last Cruise of Summer s destination is Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace Maryland on September Both destinations are first class facilities and the weekends promise to be a lot of fun! Why not come by boat or car and share in the enjoyment with your fellow squadron-mates! This month the featured speaker at our General Membership Meeting will be P/C Ron Knight, SN the Canvas Geezer. Ron will be giving a presentation on all things canvas and will welcome your questions. While on the topic of speakers, if you missed our August meeting you missed a great talk by P/D/C Bernie Karpers, N. Also known as Dr. Karpers Bernie spoke to the effects that the 8 elements we boat in and alcohol consumption have on the human body, and the aspects of boating safety that will help ensure that we all stay healthy, and alive, while on the water. Many thanks to Bernie for this very educational and potentially lifesaving presentation! I would also like to give special recognition to our Membership and Member Outreach Committee chairpersons Susan Rudy and Dianne Newborn for the work they do in bringing new members into the Squadron and encouraging participation among our current membership. They do work hard at these jobs and I am sure that if anyone volunteered to give them a hand they would very much appreciate the help! Respectfully submitted, Lt/C David Blades, AP Administrative Officer
