For those who have complained in the past that there were too few on the water events, that has been corrected. The committees have planned many great on the water events for the summer. I anticipate significant participation in these events. Remember that your participation is the key to making an event successful. We are a social organization and these events highlight our purpose. Our June Membership Meeting will be at Grosse Pointe Farms, Pier Park on 11 June. We take a break from our monthly Membership Meetings to enjoy the events planned throughout the summer. Watch the date for our September Membership Meeting. Many of us will be in Arlington Va. on 10 September for the USPS Governing Board Meeting. Thank you to all of the Vessel Safety Inspectors who have worked diligently the past few weekends at our major kick off events at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, Jefferson Beach and Beacon Cove. According to our VSC Chair, many GPPS VSC Inspectors have used their allotment of Decals and GPPS is in the process of ordering more Decals from our District Chair. Please contact P/D/C Bill Stano or one of the other VSC Inspectors to schedule your vessel inspection. Our Education Department continues throughout the summer and is offering the ABC class at the Grosse Pointe Farms, Pier Park in June and July. Registration for these classes is not through GPPS but directly with the staff at Pier Park. Remember to wear your life jacket when you are out on the water. Use you boating knowledge to be safe. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our Rendezvous which are planned to accommodate those who come by boat or car. Enjoy the summer and be safe. 1 Tars and Tripe Summer 2014

4 2 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Executive Department Lt/C Chester Dunbar, Jr., AP VESSEL SAFETY CHECK UPDATE Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Boats that pass the vessel safety examination are awarded a distinctive VSC Decal that alerts the Coast Guard an other law-enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws. The Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Vessel Examiners have been very busy over the past several weeks. Our examiners have performed vessel safety checks at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, Jefferson Beach Marina, Beacon Cove Marina and at the city parks of the Grosse Pointe Communities. In all, our vessel examiners have performed 117 vessel safety checks so far this year. If your boat does not possess all the requirements to receive a decal, you will not be red tagged, recorded, or reported to any Federal or State agency. Items failing to meet the State and Federal requirements are brought to the attention of the boat owner for remedy. By design, this is between the boat owner and the Vessel Examiner. Your boat can be re-examined at any time by any qualified Vessel Examiner. And we love to re-examine boats to keep you safe! Remember, under a 2012 Michigan law, a law enforcement officer my only stop and inspect a vessel which bears a Vessel Safety Decal upon a reasonable suspicion that the vessel or its operator is in violation of a boating law, operating under the influence or is otherwise engaged in criminal activity. The US Coast Guard can board your boat at any time regardless if you have a VSC decal. To schedule your free vessel safety check or if you would like further VSC information, contact PDC Bill Stano, JN at or wstano@comcast.net. PDC Bill Stano, JN Looking for USPS on Social Media!! 5 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron 3 SEO Report Lt/C Kurt Hansen, AP The phones have been ringing off the hook as we are getting the word out through the Web site, Vessel Safety Exams, and local Marinas about the Summer Boating Classes to be held at the Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park. They are the 5 week America s Boating Course -3rd edition which focuses on getting started, what you need, and rules to live by. They start on June 2nd and then again on July 7th at 6:30pm and run for 2 hours. Cost $ NEED to call Park ( ) to register the week before and open to all Boaters. Remember, the last night of class is the exam and your help is needed to grade test and recruit new members. Let s make this a summer to remember. Administrative Department Lt/C Frederick Muller, SN We have worked very hard at coming up with the summer rendezvous schedule and hope you will attend some of the events. We have a wide variety available by boat or land. Don t sit at home this summer. Come join us. Dave Charvat is working his magic to entice us all to come out for the Predicted Log this year. He has planned a meeting on Wednesday, June 4th at the Farms Pier Park on the Patio at 7pm, to meet with the Captains, and get all the information on their boats. You decide what boat you want to run. Then return at 8am on Saturday, June 14 to plot the course once you have been given the coordinates. The Boats will head out at 9am and run the course before the Lake gets too busy. Winner receives the money collected, the $10.00 entrance fee and name on the Cup. May the Best Captain win. 10 8 District 9 Eastside Predicted Log Saturday, June 14, 2014 How does your boat handle and perform? Nobody knows better than you do. Predicted log contests pit your knowledge and skippering skills against the clock. How closely can you predetermine the time it will take to travel each leg of a course? The Predicted Log Contest offers a fine way to practice navigation skills while satisfying one s competitive nature. The sport gives you a chance to join with other boaters on the water in developing good piloting habits along with enhancing enjoyment through social interaction. Grosse Pointe Power Squadron This year we are changing the format in order to get maximum participation this year. As Power Squadron members you all know how to plot a course, measure distance and compute 60D=SxT. It is time to put those skills to work in a fun atmosphere with a small wager at stake. The radical change this year is that you don't need your own boat to participate. All that is required is a predicted log form filled out for the boat of your choice that is registered for the event. Ten days prior to the contest, June 4th, we will host a captains meeting at the Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park. At this get together we will teach new contestants how to prepare for making predictions and show everyone how to fill out the predicted log form. During the meeting everyone will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the captains who have a boat registered for the contest. You pick the captains brain for information about the speed and RPM's that he/she plans to run. Also get any information from past performances that may be available. At this point you decide which boat you want to "run" in the predicted log. Based on the information you have accumulated you make your predictions for your log. You re filled out log form makes you the "captain" of your chosen boat. At the conclusion of the contest all turned in log forms will be compared to the actual logs results and a total error score will be computed for each contestant. The lowest percentage of total error wins. The winning contestants name along with the name of his/her chosen boat will be engraved on the trophy. This is a traveling trophy and the winner takes it home for the year. The registration fee is $10, which is applied directly to the prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. 1st place gets 65%, 2nd place gets 20% and 3rd place gets 15%. We also ask that you bring a dish to pass.

Coast Guard Cutter BRISTOL BAY. The Bristol Bay will also be pushing their Aids to Navigation (floating buoys, fixed aids and ranges) barge. The barge is capable of carrying approximately 250 people. Bring binoculars if you have them, and dress warmly. ADDRESS: The U S Power Squadron, the U S Coast Guard and US Coast Guard CITY: Auxiliary are the world s premier marine safety organizations that take great pride in sponsoring this educational opportunity to recreational basic boating S t a t e: ZIP: students. This will be a unique 3-hour educational opportunity aboard the 140-ft ship and its 130-ft. barge for a total of a 270 foot vessel. Address: We will be traveling the waters of the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair. We hope this event will provide the basic boating students with a better understanding of the aids to navigation and their light characteristics. An understanding of the aids to navigation is an essential part of safe boating, although covered in the classroom during your course; it is best understood by actually seeing the aids at sea. The timing has been planned so that daytime and evening light characteristics of the aids can be seen. During the entire voyage, a Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary member and an active duty Coast Guard Officer will provide commentary. You will see and hear about Aids to Navigation and more during our river and lake cruise. You ll have fun and improve your boating safety. Each Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary student will be given a chart replica of the river and lake areas we are going to cruise, showing the various navigational aids and their individual characteristics. They will be numbered on the chart and the actual aids and their light characteristics will be identified as we pass them. We will begin boarding promptly at 7.00 PM at Coast Guard Station Group Detroit. This is at the foot of Mt. Elliott Avenue, right at the Detroit River. We will have personnel there to assist and direct you on parking and boarding procedures. A detailed map of the area will be mailed to you along with your boarding passes. Departure time is 7:30 P M. CHILDREN: Children who attend the USPS or the USCGAUX Public Boating Courses are welcome to participate in this educational opportunity. However, we must restrict participation by other family members (and friends) to those 12 years of age and older. The Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary are family oriented organizations and we sponsor many activities that include children. But, because this cruise requires the concentration of the participants, we have the age restriction. Thanks for understanding. ABOUT USPS: Formed in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is the world s largest nonprofit boating organization. Their 60,000 members in the 450 squadrons are boating families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating on the water and in the classroom. All USPS members are volunteers. USPS District 9 is composed of 2,003 members in 22 squadrons. Collectively, these 22 squadrons teach the USPS ABC3 Boating Course to residents of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Indiana. ABOUT USCGAUX: The Coast Guard Auxiliary was created by an Act Of Congress in 1939, as a nonmilitary, civilian affiliate of the Coast Guard, and as such plays a substantial role In the National Safe Boating program. The total Coast Guard Auxiliary family consists of 35,000 volunteers. The District 9 Central region is composed of 10 Divisions, with 56 Flotillas and about members. All of our basic boating students are being invited to join this event and because of this, we u urge you to get your reservations in early. Fill out the form today and mail it along with your check.
