Saturday, at the Change of Watch the District came up again with a new great Bridge. Our new District Commander is D/C Anthony Lewandowski, AP. D/Lt /C Michael Babiarz, AP (Administrative Officer), D/Lt/C Janet Klumpp, AP (Executive Officer), D/Lt/C Ralph Ziegler, JN (Treasurer), D/Lt/C Thomas Smith, JN (Educational Officer), and D/Lt/C Jan Hartesvelt, S (Secretary) fill out our D-9 Bridge. During the coming year I hope we all have a chance to welcome them. The Spring Launch dinner meeting is coming up on May 11 at the GPYC. It is on our normal meeting day, the second Wednesday of the Month. Please plan on attending for it is the last big get together before the summer. Full information is in this Newsletter. The Vessel Safety Check officers are gearing up for the summer. If you feel that you would like to join them, please call Bill Stano and he will help you get certified. We have a very strong group who could always use more hands and eyes. At the very least, please get your boat examined and display the sticker with pride. It may prevent you from being boarded this summer and show you are an educated boater. The boats are slowly being put in the water. We are getting close to the summer boating season. Be safe out there. Use the training that you were taught in the class room for a safe summer boating season. Good Luck and May you have following seas! Commander Frederick Muller, SN Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Tars and Tripe May 2016

2 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Executive Department Lt/C Bill Stano, JN Have you launched your boat yet? Daddy s Dream II will be in its summer home in another week. I hope the weather decides to become spring! May is a very important month in the boating community. National Safe Boating week begins 21 May through the 27 May. During this week, the emphasis is to promote boating safety and the importance of wearing a life jacket. On a hot summer day, it is tempting not to wear a life jacket. In 2014 (the latest Coast Guard Statistics), the Coast Guard counted 4064 accidents that involved 610 deaths, 2678 injuries and approximately $39 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents. When the cause of death was known, 78% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims, 84% were not wearing a life jacket. Only 12% percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had received a nationally-approved boating safety education certificate. Eight out of every ten boaters who drowned were using vessels less than 21 feet in length. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol use rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; where the primary cause was known, it was listed as the leading factor in 21% of deaths. United States Power Squadrons The North American Safe Boating Campaign or simply Wear It! is a yearlong campaign focused on spreading the message of boating safety and the critical importance of always wearing a life jacket every time you head on to our wonderful Michigan Waterways. During this heightened awareness of boating safety, we as Power Squadron members can encourage fellow boaters to enroll in a safe boating class; like our ABC3 class, don t consume alcohol while operating a boat, know the navigational rules and always wear your life jacket! The North American Safe Boating Campaign has several fun and educational events scheduled to get the message out: Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day (May 20, 2016): A fun, educational event just prior to National Safe Boating Week encourages boating enthusiasts to heighten awareness of different life jacket styles, such as inflatable life jackets, and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work. National Safe Boating Week (May 21-27, 2016): The annual campaign kicks off the weekend before Memorial Day with National Safe Boating Week and continues throughout the year. Ready, Set, Wear It! Life Jacket World Record Day (May 21, 2016): As the kick-off event for National Safe Boating Week, thousands of people from around the world will attempt to set the world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated. You can find out more at ReadySetWearIt.com. Vessel Safety Checks are another way to promote boating safety by having one of our squadron s certified vessel examiners examine your boat and your well neighbor s boat to ensure your boat complies with all the federal and state regulations and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and call for help. What we do as Power Squadron Member has an effect on our fellow boaters. WE SAVE LIVES! Enough preaching, let s go and enjoy the water. PDC Bill Stano, JN wstano@comcast.net Don t just carry a life jacket Wear It!

Grosse Pointe Power Squadron SEO Report Lt/C Chet Dunbar Jr., AP 3 We did not have anyone sign up for the GPS Seminar at the GP Farms Pier Park so I have a few weeks off. There are students registered for the Knots, Bends & Hitches class on Monday, May 16. This is a one night class starting at Anyone who would like to help out would be appreciated. The 5 week ABC Boating Classes will also be at the Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park, Monday night, May 23- June 27 and July 11- August 8. These are also well attended, so come out and help Bill and I. Also refer your family and friends who are in need of Basic Boating Education. Hopefully we can generate some interest in the Fall to have a Seamanship and Piloting Class after all these classes. Dave Charvat has offered to use his boat for On The Water Training if anyone is interested in these classes. Way to go Dave. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has asked once again for us to do a Morning Boating Safety Class for the Youth on Saturday, May 21 during the Great Lakes Festival Weekend. It is a great way to connect with Junior Boaters. Plus, We will have a Booth out on the patio during the Festival to do Vessel Safety Exams on their boats. The Harbor Master would also like us to teach a class for the Dock Hands. We still have some books from last year and should be able to handle this. Help is always appreciated. I want to congratulate all those who took the Boating Class this winter and the Sail Class just finished their exam. We have a few new members from these classes and hope to see them at the Spring Launch Dinner Meeting for introductions. Remember, an Educated Boater is a Safe Boater. Let s save lives together. Chet Dunbar The United States Power Squadrons participates in the Vessel Safety Check Program through a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States Coast Guard, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. A member wishing to become a vessel examiner must be a USPS member in good standing, at least 18 years of age and study the Vessel Safety Check Manual available on the USPS web site. When the member is comfortable with the VSC material in the manual, the member must pass a VSC Exam. After passing the exam, the member must complete five supervised VSC exams under the supervision of a qualified VSC Examiner. The Vessel Examiner must complete five vessel safety checks per calendar year to remain eligible to perform Vessel Safety Checks the following year. To become a Vessel Safety Examiner, please contact PDC Bill Stano, JN at or at wstano@comcast.net Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Tars and Tripe May 2016

4 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Administrative Department Lt/C John J. Sulkowski, AP It s May and work is going into high gear to get our boats ready for the season. My fishing friends have already been out chasing walleyes due to the mild winter and lack of ice. Water levels look like they are up to where they were last year at this time. United States Power Squadrons May is also time for our Spring Launch Dinner at our May meeting on Wednesday the 11th of May at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, 16:30. We will be having a Buffet of Chicken Marsala, Rosemary Pork Tenderloin, mashed Red Skin potatoes, Broccolini with Pearl Onions and Bacon, Caesar Salad and Fresh Baked Cookies and Brownies for desert. Coffee and tea will be provided. Cost $25.00 / person. There will be a cash bar. Please see the flyer in this Tars & Tripe and RSVP to P/D/C Bill Stano JN. wstano@comcast.net. There will be a Power Pointe Presentation on the 2016 Rendezvous and Event schedule, using our New projector. We are building on last year s events with some of the same and many more new events. I have a great team of helpers and organizers who have come up with a great selection on rendezvous and events. Past Commander Joan McCarron is sponsoring a trip to The Player s in November 4, 2016 which should be lots of Fun. We will have Flyers and a Calendar for the events at the meeting but some are also in this Newsletter. Come share the excitement of a New Boating Season. Don t forget to check out the list of Events going on around the State at the other Squadrons. It is a great way to meet new boaters and see what Boating activites they are sponsoring in their areas. If you would like to sponsor a rendezvous or have an idea for a rendezvous, please let me know. National Safe Boating Week May 21-27, 2016

Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Secretary Department Lt/C Rose Stano, P 5 Well this is crunch time. We are reporting back from District 9 meeting and gearing up for Boating Safety Week and Summer Schedule. Unfortunately, the Roster is behind schedule but should be out for the June Summer Picnic. Despite the cold rainy weekend, we were all having fun and learning a lot at the District Conference. Linda Lalonde and I did a presentation about being Positive and getting the message out of our Mission of Boating Safety and Community Education to retain members and grow our Squadrons. It is so easy to look at our glass( Squadron) as being half empty when we really need to celebrate our accomplishments. It s that Positive Can Do attitude, that will keep us going and on the right track as the economy improves. That s why I go to District and National meetings, to feel the energy and bring it back. Everyone needs to go to to look at the plans for Pittsburg and the Governing Board in August 24-28, USPS is hoping to fill the 399 rooms at the Sheraton Pittsburg Hotel at Station Square. There is a listing of the planned activities around the meeting on that site and the Dinner Boat Cruise should sell out. So get your reservations in now for this new adventure. Anyone interested in Leadership training should attend. There will be a new $35.00 registration fee for anyone wanting tickets for meals and events. This was voted on in FL as a way to control costs. Remember this is a small price to keep a noble organization going. In this Newsletter is the list of Vessel Safety Dates, Times, and Places. You are all welcome to get involved by manning the education table we have set up. We pass out information on USPS, classes and help schedule the vessel exams. We also will be taking picture at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on Saturday, May 21 of people in life jackets to send to the Ready, Set, Wear It campaign. Last year we sent in about 60 people in life jackets. It was great to see the response of people to the inflatable jackets. This year I would like to take more pictures. Also, I have a new challenge this year. I have signed up for a booth at the Macomb Senior Expo at the Gibraltar Trade Center for Friday, May 20 from 9am to 1pm. This is Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day. I am asking the available members in our Squadron and the other Macomb Squadrons to come talk to Seniors about the volunteer opportunities in USPS and Promote Life Jackets use. Plus I can take pictures of other Venders, with their permission, in life jacket to send to the Boating Safety Council. After that I will be heading to Charvat, the Florist, on Mack Avenue to take a pictures of his employees in life jackets. Anyone else want me to take their Picture? Last year Dave, Chet Dunbar, and I participated. So feel free to take a selfie and send it to me. rstano@comcast.net. Who is ready to have some Fun? 14 12 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron BOATING SAFELY WITH KIDS ON BOARD Published by the Marketing/ PR Committee United States Power Squadrons Contact Greg Scotten Nothing gives parents and grandparents more delight than showing the kids a good time on the water. Unfortunately, in our desire to please, we often jump into situations without thinking of the dire consequences such as the forces when making a sharp turn with a tube or while pulling a wake board. United States Power Squadrons One extremely dangerous practice for any age is bow riding. Children are on a slippery curved surface with minimum side rail protection while receiving a maximum jolt from waves and passing wakes. I recently saw a boat go by with three kids sitting on the bow with their feet dragging in the water. They had to reach over their heads to hang on to the bow rail. The owner probably never pictured churning propellers running over his kids. Remember that an initial boating experience can be very scary and disorienting for a child. Put yourself in the position of being too small to see over the rails, of being deafened by the roar of the engine, or of being tossed off balance by the pounding waves. You can help their stability by making sure they wear secure shoes with soft soles for traction. It is a good idea to employ lightweight clothing for children and disposable swim diapers for toddlers. These items will not get too heavy when wet. Many children fall into the water while boarding a boat or playing on the dock. It is a good practice to have them don the jackets all the time, on or near water. A life jacket should fit snugly so as to not rise over their heads when in the water. A good test is to grasp the life jacket at the shoulders and lift the child off the ground, simulating flotation. When children fall unexpectedly into the water, they will experience sudden panic. Have them wear the jacket in your pool or at beachside to check the fit and to get them comfortable with the feeling of flotation. Don t let an emergency be a child s first time in a life jacket. When a child falls into the water, time is of the essence. Plan in advance for who takes the helm, who points at the child to maintain visual contact while you turn, who throws the flotation device to the child, and who goes overboard to render assistance. Having such a plan in place saves confusion and precious seconds. Following these simple tips, will help assure that kids have a safe boating experience. These precautions also allow parents to worry less, knowing their kids can return another day for more boating fun. Be good to your kids, but don t love em to death. Take the time to think and plan before embarking on your next outing. To learn more about safe boating practices to take a boating class or seminar from the United State Power Squadrons. Contact your local Power Squadron or As its members remind us: Boating is fun We ll show you how. Lt. 15 Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids! 13 Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids! Offered by the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron Between bathing suits and picnic lunches it can be easy to forget something - especially children's life jackets. Every parent wants to make sure his or her child is as safe as possible, and that goes double for parents who take their kids on the water. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety & Clean Water makes it easier for boating families to stay safe with its national life jacket loaner program. Around the country, over 500 marinas, fuel docks, BoatUS Towing Operators, Army Corp recreation sites and other waterfront businesses lend out kids life jackets for the day or weekend to families who have a temporary need for one. One of the program s goals is to educate boaters on the significance of wearing the appropriate size and type of life jacket while boating. Another is to make sure a day of boating isn t spoiled just because a family forgot a life jacket at home. And finally, the most important goal is to simply keep kids safe on the water! The loaner program is ideal for boaters who may be having guests on their boat and wish to avoid purchasing extra children s jackets for one- time use. New this year, is a limited number of adult lifejackets. The program is funded in part by donations from more than half a million members of BoatUS. The Boat U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water advocates partnerships between volunteer organizations and boating businesses. Organizers say the loaner program is designed to help boaters comply with state law requiring children under 6 years old to wear either a Type I or Type II life jacket while on an open deck. Children typically drown in less than three minutes. By wearing a correctly fitting life jacket, their chances of survival in the water increase dramatically. Here is how the program works: A boating family can go to a participating marina and borrow a life jacket for short- term use. Three different size jackets are available: infant (under 30lbs.), small child (30-50lbs.), and youth (50-90lbs.). Each jacket has a Boat U.S. Foundation Logo printed on it and a plastic tag with return information. Where can I go to borrow a life jacket?
