1 HAMPTON ROADS CHAPTER American Society of Military Comptrollers Inside This Issue 1 Message from the President 2 Upcoming Events Board Members 4 ASMC chapter News 5 ASMC Hampton Roads Fund Raising Proposal by Seth Fargen 6/7 Article by Wendy Watson F I V E Message from the President Seth Fargen S T A R C H A P T E R OCTOBER 2011 As the incoming President of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the ASMC, I want to thank you all for the opportunity to work with you during the upcoming year and express my appreciation to the outgoing officers for their hard work during the past year and the achievement of the Five Star Status for our Chapter! I also wanted to thank everyone who has assisted the new committee chairs with getting familiar with their new roles and hope that you have all had an opportunity to meet at one of the luncheons. 8 Executive Board Meeting Minutes 10 Community Service Corner 11 Flier and Directions The Board has approved the upcoming events for the year which is included in this month s newsletter and which we will be posting a calendar on the Chapter s website so that you can easily see upcoming events. As a reminder, donations for the Write Stuff School Supplies are due between August. As we look forward to the next year, I have set several goals for myself and hope that you will join me in making these possible. Professional Development - Increase the number of people passing the CDFM and CDFM-A exams and gaining their professional certifications. Sponsor local training sessions and coaching from those who have passed the tests. Membership - Increase our civilian, military and contractor members by 10%. This may be a challenge in an environment of cost controls and budget cuts, but we could easily exceed this if we all could sponsor in one additional person. Look to gain additional executive and management support throughout the area. Publicity and Ways and Means Increase our revenues and awareness of the Chapter within the community. This will allow us to fund additional scholarships and Community Service activities. While we will continue to sponsor many of our traditional events, I am proposing a new event, which I think you will all find exciting and a great opportunity for us all! (See related article). I will be working with each of the individual committees to set specific goals and present to the Board for approval. I encourage you to join a committee of interest and share your ideas! If you re not sure what the committees do, please see the Committee Descriptions and members in this issue.

6 PAGE 6 CDFM Certification By Wendy Watson, CDFM-A As a new season of cooler weather and fall foliage begins, think about pursuing your own CDFM certification goal. Make an investment in yourself and review the below information taken from the ASMC website: In addition to completing all three module examinations, the candidate must satisfy the following financial management experience requirements before being issued his or her CDFM certificate. Complete four years of federal government related financial management experience (with an associate degree or higher), or Complete three years of Defense related financial management experience (without degree), or Complete two years of Defense related financial management experience if the candidate holds an Associate, Baccalaureate, or higher degree. The process begins with visiting CDFM Program Enrollment on the website and complete the application online or through the mail. After you receive your CDFM Candidate I.D. you have two years to take the basic three modules required for CDFM certification. If you are not yet an ASMC member, you can join at the same time and receive the member rate. For those who have attained the CDFM certification, a Module 4 Acquisition awaits. I took the test a second time after taking the Acquisition module training class and passed it. I now have the Acquisition specialty behind the CDFM. Topics covered in the module include Systems Engineering, Resource Management and Human Systems Integration to name a few. The class was interesting and fast paced. A great deal of material is covered in two days and you will not get bored. The CDFM testing process is a challenge but not impossible by any means. You can set each test as a goal for yourself. I am sure you work with someone who has attained this certification. That person can be a great coach or mentor to help you on your way to your goals. The classes are the best way to prepare for the test and then study on your own leading up to each test. If you are unable to get away to the classes, you can purchase study guides on the ASMC website and study on your own. The first three modules do have some overlapping material such as Fiscal Law. I know people that have taken each test two weeks apart and were successful. I took the first three one month apart. You have to find the schedule that works best for you. You have two years to complete it once you are a registered CDFM candidate. your own testing schedule based on your personal and family needs. You set
7 PAGE 7 I also have a few words to my fellow CDFM s and CDFM-A s. There is information for you as well on the ASMC website about the CPE requirement. It is a 12 page document that I recommend you read and save for future reference. You are required to acquire 80 hours of CPE every two years. Your certification date is the benchmark for the two years. A full listing of the ways you can earn CPE s is in the document. There is a wide variety of methods in addition to the standard training classes. Included is a self study program that ASMC offers on its website with National PDI training classes. You can view the classes online or purchase the entire set of DVD s. The CPE requirement is another good reason to attend our own chapter s monthly membership luncheons. Start investigating the CDFM process and get your feet wet with registering to be a CDFM candidate. You also help the chapter in attaining the certification. The chapter earns points for each member that earns the CDFM. The obvious reason of enriching your knowledge for career and professional development is basis enough to pursue the CDFM. You can make a difference in helping the Hampton Roads ASMC Chapter receive the coveted Five-Star recognition at the National PDI too. Ms. Tara Lambert will be speaking on The Importance of Certification in Today s Environment at the Hampton Roads Chapter luncheon meeting on October 26, 2011at the U.S. Coast Guard Base Support Unit, Portsmouth. Please contact your Chapter Area Representative by October 20, 2011 to reserve your spot.
