3 National Chemistry Week Chemistry - Our Health, Our Future The American Chemical Society s local Savannah River Section is Celebrating National Chemistry Week in October. Hands on science demonstrations will be held at the following locations October 15th Science Enrichment and Education Day at Ruth Patrick Science Center, USCA - 9am-2pm Georgia-Carolina State Fair (downtown Augusta) - 2pm-6pm October 22nd Georgia-Carolina State Fair (downtown Augusta) - 2pm-6pm Western Carolina State Fair (Aiken) - 2pm-6pm October 29th Western Carolina State Fair (Aiken) - 2pm-6pm Demos for Hispanic participants (North Augusta) - 2pm-4pm We are still seeking volunteers. Fair volunteers receive free fair admission. SEED volunteers get a free T-shirt and lunch. Students younger than 18 are required to have an adult volunteer present during volunteer activities. Students, teachers, and parents are welcome to volunteer (a great extra credit activity). Please contact Linda at ldyoumans@ gmail.com or if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions. Also, if you can t volunteer, you are welcome to bring your children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors out to any of these events. All members are welcome to participate in any of our public outreach events. If you can fit just one event per year into your schedule, it would be greatly appreciated. 4 Local News Chair s Corner It s actually starting to feel like fall here in the CSRA, and with cooler weather comes National Chemistry Week (or NCW). This year s theme is Chemistry Our Health, Our Future to correspond with the International Year of Chemistry s Chemistry and Medicine quarter. The local section will be busy at several venues throughout the CSRA and we still need volunteers so please get in contact with me, Kim Crapse, or Linda Youmans-McDonald to help. In addition, we are planning a meeting with Phillip Buckhaults at MCG (excuse me, GHSU) to discuss genetics and mutations look for an update from Kathryn Taylor-Pashow. - Tad Whiteside, ACS-SR Chair 2011 Upcoming Event Nancy Jackson, ACS President, will be speaking to the local section on November 9th at Casa Blanca in Augusta, GA. Dinner will be $20 per member. Students, 50-year, and unemployed members receive $5 off. 4 Science On Tap The Science On Tap, the new outreach program that involves going to the people, returns on October 20th at Aiken Brew Pub, Aiken, SC from 5pm to 7pm. One round of beverages will be provided to the volunteers. If interested in participating, please contact Tad Whiteside (tad.whiteside@srnl.doe.gov ).
5 Award for Excellence in High School Teaching Susan Smith, Chemistry Teacher at Westminster School of Augusta, is the 2011 recipient of the ACS Division of Chemical Education Southeast Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching. She will be honored at the SERMACS 2011 Awards Banquet. And the award consists of a plaque, a $1000 honorarium from the ACS Division of Chemical Education, a matching $1000 honorarium from SERMACS, travel expenses (subject to restrictions) and meeting registration for SERMACS Furthermore, the SERMACS 2011 organizing committee will acknowledge her in the meeting program. Local News to apply but preference will be given to presenters. Please contact Glenn Fugate ( or glenn.fugate@srnl.doe.gov) for an application. Local Section T-Shirts We are planning on ordering T-Shirts for volunteers to wear during National Chemistry Week events. They will be white, short-sleeve, with the local section name on it. Volunteer s shirts are complementary, but if you would like one, they will be $10 each. Please send a note to Linda Youmans- McDonald (linda.youmans-mcdonald@ srs.gov) with your size, ASAP. Student Travel Winner The Savannah River Section of the American Chemical Society will be giving a $500 travel grant to an undergraduate student attending a regional or national ACS meeting. Grants will be given for a spring and a fall meeting. Students must fill out the form below and submit before the appropriate deadline. Winners will be chosen based on the application submitted. A student does not have to be a presenting a paper or poster in order 5 Local Elections Local section elections are underway and end October 25th. Registration Meeting registration is only $35 for K-12 teachers Regional News High School Program October 29th Workshop fee of $5 and the Awards Luncheon is $10 *Note ACS-SR will reimburse any local section K-12 teacher the $5 registration fee for the workshop. Career If you are planning on attending SER- MACS2011, and are an employer, job seeker, or student, you are invited to participate in the Career Fair, which will have programs all week. In addition to interview opportunities there will be three ACS career workshops and additional workshops to meet the needs of midcareer as well as entry-level chemists and students. Individual resume reviews and a speed networking activities are planned. 7 Awards Request for Nominations for the 2012 Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest. Nominations deadline is October 15, 2011 The Esselen Award for Chemistry in the public interest is one of the most prestigious honors provided by the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society. The award annually recognizes a chemist whose scientific and technical work has contributed to the public well-being, and has thereby communicated positive values of the chemical profession. The Awardee should be a living resident of the United States or Canada at the time of nomination, and the significance of this work should have become apparent within the five years preceding nomination. National News The award consists of a medal and a check for $5,000. Travel expenses incidental to the conferring of this award will be reimbursed. The award will usually be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts at the April meeting of the Northeastern Section. The Awardee will deliver an address on the subject of the work for which the honor is being conferred, or for work in progress which is also directed to chemistry in the public interest. 7 More information at awards_esselen.html Elections You should soon receive a packet from ACS-HQ inviting you to vote for the next ACS president.
