Gruwell 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In accordance with the Department of Defense Military Parental Leave Program, the Air Force will be expanding the parental leave policy on non-chargeable leave entitlements following the birth or adoption of a child. Effective immediately, the new policy applies to Total Force Airmen who are birth mothers and fathers, same-sex couples, as well as adoptive and surrogate parents. Under the new policy, AFI , Military Leave Program, outlines three forms of non-chargeable leave following a qualifying birth event or adoption: maternity convalescent leave, primary caregiver leave and secondary caregiver leave. 6 NEWS 6 Combat Airlifter July 20, 2018 Parental Continued from page 5 Air Force is trying to give more time back to the Airmen by increasing the amount of leave the secondary caregiver can take, said Staff Sgt. Brendan Hayes, 19th Comptroller Squadron financial operations flight supervisor. The increased leave of the secondary caregiver allows a little more time for the family dynamic to come together before the parent returns to work. Now maternity convalescent leave is six weeks, primary caregiver leave is six weeks and secondary caregiver leave is three weeks. Every birth mother will have convalescent leave. Caregiver leave is given in addition to the convalescent leave. For all three types of parental leave, the allotted time off must be taken all at once and cannot be split up. Primary and secondary caregiver leave can be taken any time within the first year after a child s birth or adoption. Giving birth is exhausting, and new mothers really do need that time to just let the body recuperate, said Tech. Sgt. Laprincess Day, an expecting mother. The fact they [Air Force] gave the option to have both parents home to take care of the baby for even a little more time is really good. Covered service members having a child by birth, adoption or surrogacy will determine which parent is the primary and secondary caregiver. Designations for caregiver status should be made as early as possible and follow Department of Defense guidance. Each parent can only hold one caregiver status per birth event or adoption; for example, a secondary cannot transfer their leave to the primary caregiver. Previously, Air Force policy authorized 12 consecutive weeks of maternity convalescent leave to female Airmen who gave birth. Additionally, 10 days of non-chargeable leave were given to an Airman whose spouse gave birth. Reserve Component Airmen should refer to Air Force Instruction for specific eligibility requirements. The Air Force policy, authorized by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, is effective immediately and retroactive to December 23, For additional information regarding the Military Leave Program, please visit AFI or call the LRAFB finance office at st Pentecostal Church North Pulaski Church of Christ Sunday Bible Study...9 am Sunday Morn. 7 Combat Airlifter July 20, How to properly discard old uniforms, training gear By Airman 1st Class Kristine M. Gruwell 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs NEWS Due to the upcoming uniform changes and increase in mission oriented protective posture gear training, all Airmen need to be sure they are properly discarding their Airman Battle Uniforms, MOPP gear and all other military uniforms. Whether the uniform is for training or operational purposes, military gear of any sort needs to be discarded in the proper fashion. There are a few different ways Airmen can dispose of their gear. Do: n Airmen can donate their old military uniforms to their local Airman s Attic or Little Rock Spouses Club Thrift Shop. The Little Rock Air Force Base Airman s Attic and LRSC Thrift Shop is located in building 864. n Local Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps units use old uniforms for their cadets. Airmen are able to donate their old Airman Battle Uniforms to these units. Do Not: n Throwing any uniform into a dumpster is violation of operation security. Uniforms can be used by the adversary to imitate an Airman which could give them access to areas on an installation. Therefore, if an Airman needs to discard their uniform, they can use one of the methods above. n Airmen cannot sell their issued items to other individuals. According to AFI section 2.2, depending on the kind of discharge, Airmen can either keep uniformed items, return uniformed items to the Air Force for reissue or return uniformed items to the Air Force so the Air Force can prepare them for disposal. n Airmen are issued training MOPP gear upon arrival to LRAFB. Before Airmen leave they are required to turn in their issued MOPP gear. Therefore, individuals should not attempt to discard this training gear in any way. If MOPP gear somehow gets used in a real world situation, there are steps taken by qualified shops to discard of the gear appropriately. n Airmen who wish to discard old uniform items RED S MINI STORAGE 800 Carver Ln., Jacksonville Keypad Access 24/7 Video Surveillance Paved Driveways On-Site Management Units Accessible 7 days a week 8 am-8 pm Multiple sizes available from 5x10 to 15x30 CALL TODAY...MOVE-IN TODAY U.S. Air Force graphics by Airman 1st Class Kristine M. 8 FEATURE 8 Combat Airlifter July 20, 2018 JOINT TRAINING Cascadia calls on LRAFB to assist in demonstrating capabilities Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Rhett Isbell 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Cascadia. It s a subduction zone along the western coast of the United States set to cause an earthquake every few hundred years capable of devastating much of the western seaboard in a matter of minutes. To minimize the fallout of such a catastrophic event, Kingsley Field, Oregon, was designated as a collection point for relief efforts of a potential disaster. Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, was called upon to assist Kingsley Field in demonstrating the demands and capabilities of air lift in a sustained humanitarian aid situation. It s a two-in-one exercise, said Lt. Col. Christopher Wright, 173rd Fighter Wing chief of wing plans. The main objective is to be able to host airlift-centered planes during a humanitarian response to the Cascadia earthquake and identify limiting factors in being able to properly manage them. We also had the added benefit of being able to have the C-130s and F-15s fly together. Having prior experience with flying C-130s, Wright felt that Little Rock s robust combat airlift capability would be a perfect fit for generating See Training, page 10 (Above) F-15Cs taxi onto the ramp July 14 at Kingsley Field, Ore. Ryan Maxey, 41st Airlift Squadron NCO in charge of standards and evaluations, prepares a C-130J cargo to be loaded with a tactical air navigation system July 14 at Kingsley Field, Ore. The tactical air navigation system weighs approximately 20,000 lbs.

10 10 FEATURE Combat Airlifter July 20, 2018 Training Continued from page 8 the data necessary to lay the groundwork for hosting a large-scale humanitarian mission. We performed a stress test of Kingsley Field s real-world capabilities to bring in aid immediately following a simulated tsunami or earthquake disaster, said Capt. Derek Potter, 61st Airlift Squadron C-130J pilot. I think it was a great learning experience for us and believe the unit here got what they needed to perform their mission successfully. Along with testing Kingsley Fields airlift capabilities, Little Rock Air Force Base was able to conduct joint training operations with the F-15 school house including; air-to-air engagements and escort tactics to the benefit of both units. Both units also found it helpful to be able to sit down and discuss what was and wasn t for the mission. Working to optimize mission time and manpower, LRAFB and Kingsley Field took the first steps towards a more effectively cared for coast and higher quality Air Force. effective in the air. One of the mission sets we train to is offensive counter air, said Capt. Chris DuBois, 114th Fighter Squadron F-15C instructor pilot, which means getting an asset into a contested area. Working with the C-130s, we were able to practice for this mission a lot more effectively and see what it s like to integrate with them I feel like this was a great first start, and there needs to be more exercises like this because you can never have enough practice for Cascadia, Wright said. It s got to be a joint effort, and we need to tie ourselves together more. It s invaluable training, and I hope we can set up a curriculum for the school house at LRAFB and for the school house here in the future.
