2 FROM THE TOP 2 Combat Airlifter Feb. 23, 2018 Warrior Games make triumphant return COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Community and business leaders joined representatives of the military at the Air Force Academy last night to mark the 100-day countdown until athletes arrive in Colorado for the 2018 Department of Defense Warrior Games. Now in their ninth year, the Warrior Games are returning to Colorado Springs, the city that hosted the inaugural Games in The Warrior Games will be free and open to the public throughout the competitions from June 2-9. The Warrior Games are a Paralympic-style competition between the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations Command. The United Kingdom Armed Forces, Australian Defence Force, and for the first time in Warrior Games history, the Canadian Armed Forces, recently confirmed they will compete in the Warrior Games. This will be the sixth year the U.K. Armed Forces will compete in the Warrior Games and the second time for Australian Defence Force athletes. Lieutenant General Gina Grosso, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services and senior Air Force officer hosting the evening s event announced the addition of three new adaptive sports to this DoD photo by EJ Hersom Petty Officer 2nd Class A.J. Mohammad, a Warrior Games Athlete and Navy veteran, competes in an archery competition during the 2017 Warrior Games. Archery is one of 11 sports featured during the 2018 Department of Defense Warrior Games at the Air Force Academy, which will be held from June 2-9. year s line-up: indoor rowing, powerlifting and time trial cycling. The other eight events include archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball. In my 30-plus years of service, nothing has moved me more than seeing the determination, resiliency and pure strength of our wounded, ill and injured service members, said Lt Gen. Grosso. In nearly 100 days, more than 200 warriors will arrive at Colorado Springs, Olympic City USA, to compete amongst each other for Gold, but more importantly, the comradery, healing, and recovery that comes with competitive sports. This is by far and away one of the most exciting sporting events I ve ever witnessed, she added. The 2018 Warrior Games, free and open to the public, are an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of wounded, injured and ill service members and veterans in overcoming adversity and thriving against the odds. The Department of Defense Warrior Games were established in 2010 as a way to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, ill and injured service members and to expose them to adaptive sports. Approximately 250 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and U.S. Special Operations Command will participate in the competition. They will go head-to-head in 11 sports including archery, cycling and time trial cycling, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, shooting, swimming, powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, track and field, engaging in friendly competition and experiencing the healing power of sports. 6 6 NEWS Combat Airlifter Feb. 23, 2018 Traffic Management Office: PCS season is on the move By Tammy L. Reed 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Stop! Do NOT mess up that piano. Anything else, just don t mess up that piano. The section chief for the Traffic Management Office, remembered stressing and yelling that at her movers during one of her five permanent changes of station where her grandmother s piano was, once again, successfully, coming off a moving van. Master Sgt. Elizabeth Witt, 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron section chief of Personal Property and Passenger Travel, knows the stress of moving and understands what people go through when they come in to TMO to move their whole lives for the first time, or the fifth. TMO is divided into two sections: Personal Property, where they move household goods for all services; and Passenger Travel, where they handle permanent change of station, temporary duty, and deployment travel. All of which can be stressful times for the service members, civilians, Department of Defense employees, or retirees involved. We really try to lessen that burden, because we do understand how stressful it is, no matter if you are PCSing, deploying or whatever it is, Witt said. 7 Combat Airlifter Feb. 23, 2018 NEWS 7 Move Continued from page 6 She adds, as far as personal property goes, people who are moving can relieve some stress by coming to TMO as soon as they get their orders. One of the biggest problems TMO staff has is people waiting until the last moment. Witt describes a service member PCSing overseas, and they are entitled to three shipments total. They will wait until two weeks prior to moving and want three different shipments picked up. May through September is TMO s peak season for moving, and orders will start dropping soon. As soon as you get those orders in, it may be four months before you re leaving, but come in and see us now, Witt said. It may take us three weeks to book versus a week because it is so far out, but at least you are guaranteed those dates especially if it s in peak season. PCSing customers need not bring anything else but their orders and a rough idea of how and when they want to move their household goods. Once they come in, a personal property representative will direct them to log into the Defense Personal Property System, CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB!! Once the customer inputs everything into the system, then a representative will sit with them for one-on-one counseling to go over their checklist. One of the things they tell them about is the official Department of Defense moving portal, which is packed with information to help people move successfully and how to file a claim if it was not so successful. We definitely tell people about the website, especially when they call and say that they don t have orders, but what can they do? You can check out Prepare yourself, arm yourself, know what you are going to do when you come in here with those orders, said Tech Sgt. Jaimie Bauer, 19th LRS TMO non-commissioned officer in charge of Personal Property and Passenger Travel. DPS and the one-on-one counseling is the same process for a contracted carrier move, or an old school do-it-yourself move. For a carrier move, the similarity ends with TMO sending the customer s finished paperwork to the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office South Central for them to book a carrier. A lot of people move themselves. Or do a partial move, where they ll have a carrier come in and move most of their stuff, and they ll move their little things, then get paid for it. There s a gain to it, Witt said. Capt. Benn Slikker, a pilot trainee TDY from Vance Air Force Base, Okla., normally does his own moves, but this time he s moving overseas. I am here TDY from Vance AFB, learning to fly the C-130J model. Today I m at TMO because while I m at Little Rock, I m actually in the process of shipping all of my stuff for my PCS to Ramstein Air Base, he said. My wife will be in Oklahoma at the end of the month to supervise the moving company. I didn t call beforehand, but I usually know that anytime something has to do CABOT S ANNUAL DINNER & LIVE AUCTION THURSDAY, MARCH 8 TH 6:00 PM CABOT NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY 300 COMMERCE PARK DR., CABOT, AR LIVE AUCTION! My experience with TMO was very good, she did a very good job, answered all my questions and was very helpful with information. The big thing that I try to teach my young Airmen coming in, is that people handle stress differently, Witt said. It s our job as customer service to take care of them and make sure that we ve relieved a little bit of that stress. Bauer added, I think once that customers get in, and they see how smooth the process is with us giving them all the information they need, they re pretty happy by the time they leave. 8 8 FEATURE Combat Airlifter Feb. 23, 2018 What s that smell? Water, Fuel flight keeps Little Rock fresh Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Grace Nichols, 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Little Rock Air Force Base is home to Agile Combat Airlift. Although the ground may be what C130 s land on, It s what s on the inside that counts, too. Airmen the 19th Civil Engineer Squadron Water and Fuel Systems flight maintain systems moving more than 500 thousand gallons of water daily through 56 miles of underground pipes enabling base personnel to shower and hydrate, while also up keeping separate pipes dedicated to fuel. the team of 17 service members and six civilian Airmen are in charge of a variety of necessities including maintaining the natural gas distribution center, sprinklers and other components relating to safety of personnel and equipment. Because of this, the water in Water and Fuel stands for many things checking the chlorine levels in the base pool to providing water for fire hydrants, but its main component is a little smelly. We re in charge of the sewage systems on base, said Airman 1st Class Jacob Ballew, 19th CES Water and Fuel Systems journeymen. Anything that flushes or pumps water is our responsibility. Anytime a toilet or similar component on the operational side of the base gets clogged, it s the flights job to restore flow. It s a dirty job, but the people make it worth it, Ballew said. Sometimes things go as planned, sometimes they go awry really fast. We have to rely on each other. the team performs daily checks on all their responsibilities, especially lift stations which are used to prevent waste returning to its source. Poop doesn t flow up hill, Ballew said. We want to keep it that way. the job demands the team be versatile, knowing both the fuel and water tools of the trade while keeping up to standards. Before any of them can take the plunge, training and safety precautions must take place. We learn by doing, Ballew said. there are lots of aspects we have to learn by being mentored on the job. the Airmen train to be knowledgeable in both the systems and measures to take to be safe while on duty. Safety comes down to the little things, like washing your hands and wearing rubber gloves or being updated on immunizations and respirator training, said Staff Sgt. Luis Lepe, 19th CES Water and Fuel Systems maintenance supervisor. Being mindful of what we re doing regarding safety as well as training is key, especially when dealing with water and electricity. According to the Airmen, they attribute much of their success to the civilians on their team, depending on them for knowledge on all avenues of the mission. People are the most important aspect of Combat Airlift, Ballew said. Without them, planes don t get flown. Personnel need hydration and clean facilities and planes need fuel. I would like to think that s a major part of Combat Airlift. Airman 1st Class Jacob Ballew, 19th Civil Engineer Squadron Water and Fuel Systems journeyman, maintains systems moving more than 500 thousand gallons of water daily through 56 miles of underground pipes Feb. 2 at Little Rock Air Force Base. The Water and Fuel flight is comprised of 17 service members and six civilians.
