We provide you with the necessary skills to prepare you for life after High School. Leadership Education develops leadership skills and acquaints cadets with the potential application of life skills to include discipline, responsibility, leadership and citizenship. Wellness, referred to as the Extreme Excellence Challenge (E2C) Program, is designed to test Cadets mental and physical strengths. Cadet instructions will consist of 40% Aerospace Science, 40% Leadership Education, and 20% Wellness. 3 EXPECTATIONS: Instructor Expectations: Come to class and be on time; bring something to write on and write with; show a positive attitude; and come prepared to learn. Both your performance and behavior are expected to always be nothing short of exemplary. Academic Honesty/Integrity/Homework: You will learn and live up to your Cadet Honor Code, and the Air Force Corps Values Classroom Success: all Cadets are expected to succeed (not fail) and to graduate. I. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS/OBJECTIVES Note: All AFJROTC classes are blends of material from an Aerospace Science (AS) component, Leadership Education (LE) [includes drill] component and Wellness component. Instruction contact time is AS 40%, LE 40% and Wellness 20%. Because JROTC classes are blended (mixture of different year Cadets), Level I AS & LE courses are always taught along with a higher level AS & LE course from year-to-year. AEROSPACE SCIENCE For organizational purposes Aerospace Science is separated from the Leadership Education component in each AFJROTC class. In practice, however, the overlap is considerable. For example, writing and speaking skills are categorized as Leadership Hours but can and should be incorporated into the Aerospace Science courses. Additionally, many of the Aerospace Science topics will be helpful in the Leadership Education classes. The course objectives are: AS-100: A Journey into Aviation History 1. Know the historical facts and impacts of the early attempts to fly 2. Know the major historical contributors to the development of flight 3. Know the contributions of the U.S. Air Force to modern aviation history 4. Know the key events of space exploration history Textbook: V-7025T Aerospace Science: A Journey into Aviation History
The course objectives are: 1. Know the atmosphere environment AS-200: SCIENCE OF FLIGHT 2. Know the basic human requirements of flight 3. Understand why Bernoulli s principals and Newton s Laws of motion are applied to the theory of flight and the operating principals of reciprocating engines, jet engines and rocket engines 4. Know the basic elements of navigation, the four basic navigation instruments, and current methods of navigation Textbook: V-8225G Aerospace Science: Science of Flight 2002 LEADERSHIP EDUCATION Leadership Education (LE) is an integral part of each year s instruction for AFJROTC cadets. Each year s activities are broken into Academic and Leadership components. In practice, however, the overlap is considerable. The development of writing and speaking skills are categorized as Leadership Hours, yet when used to present subject matter related to what is being taught in the academic area, the results are twofold. Additionally, many after-school activities provide the proving ground for newly learned leadership skills. Activities such as drill teams, model rocketry clubs, and the formal cadet corps operation all require offices with considerable responsibilities. To describe the leadership portion of the curriculum as being 288 hours (72 hours per year) is technically true; in practice it is highly understated. LE-100: Citizenship, Character & Air Force Tradition The course objectives are: 1. Know the importance of AFJROTC history, mission, purpose, goals, and objectives. 2. Know military traditions and the importance of maintaining a high standard of dress and personal appearance. 3. Know the importance of attitude, discipline, and respect, and why values and ethics are so important. 4. Know the importance of individual self-control, common courtesies and etiquette. 5. Know that an effective stress management program improves the quality of life. 6. Know why courtesies are rendered to the United States flag and the National Anthem. 7. Know why it is important to be a good democratic citizen and to be familiar with the different forms of governments. 8. Know the importance of keeping yourself well and helping others stay well. Textbook: V-7101T Leadership Education I: Citizenship, Character & Air Force Tradition 4
LE-200: Communication, Awareness & Leadership The course objectives are: 1. Apply the key factors of effective communication 2. Know the ways in which personal awareness affects individual actions 3. Know the key elements of building and encouraging effective teams 4. Apply the key behaviors for becoming a credible and competent leader Textbook: V-7102T Leadership Education II: Communication, Awareness & Leadership DRILL AND CEREMONIES The Drill and Ceremonies course provides an in-depth introduction to drill and ceremonies. This is not a stand-alone course, but it is to be taught as part of the Leadership Education 40% component for each Air Force Junior ROTC class. The Drill and Ceremonies course concentrates on the elements of military drill, and describes individual and group precision movements, procedures for saluting, drill, ceremonies, reviews, parades, and development of command voice. Students are provided detailed instruction on ceremonial performances and protocol for civilian and military events and have the opportunity to personally learn drill. Though each class will follow an established lesson plan, most of the work is to be hands-on. The course objectives are: 1. Know the importance of drill and ceremonies and when and how to salute. 2. Know basic commands and characteristics of the command voice. 3. Apply and execute the concepts and principles of basic drill positions and movements. 5. Apply the principles and procedures of drill movements used with smaller units. 6. Know the function of the group and the wing. 7. Know how groups and wings are formed. 8. Know the purpose and definition of ceremonies and parades. Textbook: V-2627T AFM : Personnel Drill and Ceremonies WELLNESS CURICULUM The Friday AFJROTC Extreme Excellence Challenge (E2C) Wellness Program at Reagan is a unit-designed program per HQ guidelines. Wellness is an official part of the Air Force Junior ROTC program. It is an exercise program focused on individual base line improvements with the goal of achieving a national standard as calculated with age and gender. Wellness is instrumental in developing citizens of character dedicated to serving our nation and communities. The program is provided as a tool to help you develop individualized training programs for your cadets. Cadets will be given the opportunity to put into practice the wellness concepts that are taught in Leadership Education I. Instructors are free to include other activities cadets enjoy such as team sports in order to keep the Wellness Program fun and motivating. The Wellness Program is modified to meet individual goals. Personal improvement will be rewarded. The program is comprised of nine (9) warm-up exercises, which can be conducted with minimal space and with minimal climate dependency (e.g. the 1-mile run). The exercises develop all muscle groups and 5
provide sufficient anaerobic and aerobic intensity. They require no equipment and use only body weight and common objects (e.g. chairs). The course objective for the Wellness Program is to: 1. Motivate JROTC cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. 2. Create an individualized training program based on national standards by age and gender. 3. Identify areas of improvements for each cadet. 4. Incorporate a physical training program to reach goals. NOTE: The following instructions are also provided on AS & LE days: 1. Current World News Events 2. Front Page News From The Austin Statesman 3. Internet Discovery Streaming 4. Instructor Show n Tell 5. Instructor Food for Thought Group Activity II. Evaluations: The final semester grade will be cumulative based on weekly grades (CVE, pop quiz/uniform wear), and the end-of-cycle exam. All Cadets will receive WEEKLY grades, with uniform grades as a major grade. The following subjective areas will also be observed and measured: 1. JROTC Class Participation 2. Class Participation---other than JROTC 2. E2C Participation on Fridays NOTE: Measured performance in the above areas will determine if Cadets are allowed to participate in Cadet CIA activities. Grading Policy Graphics Chart: 6
Level I (CH): daily homework and/or subjective assessment and evaluation of behavior and performance Level II (FA): weekly assessment by use of pop quizzes or demonstrated performance Level III (CA): Cycle/Unit assessment by use of written and/or performance exam A. Uniform Days: Every Wednesday & Thursday 1. Wear of the AFJROTC Cadet Uniform is MANDATORY. The Air Force uniform will be worn once a week to ALL classes and the PT uniform will be worn on Wellness Fridays. Improper or disrespectful wear of the uniform and/or not wearing the uniform to all classes on uniform day will result in a grade of 0. Guidelines for the wear of the uniform can be found in the TX- 011 Cadet Handbook & Guide. Uniform make-up day, for those Cadets not wearing the uniform on their make-up day, is always the day after your scheduled uniform wear day. Cadets are still required to wear the uniform all day, must see an instructor to be inspected, and cannot receive a grade any higher than 80 after inspection. 2. Weekly uniform inspections will be conducted with a possible weekly grade of when no uniform or grooming violations are evident. Points will be subtracted from 100 for each violation found. The inspection will be conducted by instructors and/or Flight Commanders using the standards listed in AFI and AFROTCI The Cadet Inspection Checklist will be annotated with any discrepancies discovered during the inspection and maintained in the Flight Binder. B. Weekly POP Quiz: All Cadets will be given a pop quiz every week in the areas matching the JROTC curriculum: LE, AS, E2C, and Drill. NOTE: CADETS ARE ALLOWED TO USE CLASS NOTES FOR ALL POP QUIZES---BUT NOT EXAMS. C. District Integrated Grading Scale (IGS): Tier II General Education Courses D. Late Work: will not be accepted and not graded---unless for unusual circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor. E. Tutoring: will be available before school, after school, on the weekends, and from senior Cadets. Ask for tutoring schedules and Cadet availability. 7
