2 2 Combat Airlifter April 20, 2018 WASHINGTON (AFNS) Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Stephen Wilson emphasized Airmen will continue leading the way in preparing for the future of war and highlighted the importance of speed, connectivity and innovation during the 2018 Future of War Conference on April 9 in Washington, D.C. Wilson said the goal is for the Air Force to be the thought leaders for future conflict to deter, defend and win any future fight. The service is looking for new ways to do business and accelerate the transfer of ideas from the lab bench to the flight line to increase lethality and provide the joint force a technological advantage. Industrial-age speed won yesterday s war. Digitalage speed will win tomorrow s war, he said. It s going to take all of us working together across academia, across government and across industry we re going to have to compete to win. That s where I think we can FROM THE TOP VCSAF highlights speed, innovation as keys to victory in future war By Tech. Sgt. Robert Barnett Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs come together. Wilson noted the general nature of war will not change, but the speed of connectivity will. The Air Force must be able to collect and decipher information and produce dilemmas for our adversaries at a rate they can never keep up with. It is not just speed in decision-making. It is also speed in budgeting, contracting, acquisition, defending the homeland and owning the high ground in air and space. In short, speed wins, he said. It is about data the oil of the 21st century, he added. The intent is to invest in technology and apply it flexibly across all domains, including space. Space is essential for any joint warfight, Wilson U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Robert Barnett Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Stephen Wilson speaks during the 2018 Future of War Conference on April 9 in Washington, D.C. Wilson discussed how the service will fight in the future. said. How do we acquire space capabilities faster? Our space force today is the envy of the world. And, the United States Air Force is responsible for 90 percent of that. Space is a contested domain that provides many capabilities to the nation, including indications and warning, missiles, communications, GPS and more it must be defended, Wilson said. The service is building a defendable architecture to maintain the U.S. advantage in space. Air Force leaders are training space operators and working to speed up the acquisition process for building capabilities, partnering with industry, enabling milestone decision authorities and other transaction authorities, all to advance space capabilities faster. Mission success starts and ends with people, he continued. We start with really good people, Wilson said. We then make sure they ve got the right education, training and experience; they re confident and proud of what they do; they re personally and professionally fulfilled. And, when we do that, we get mission success. 5 Combat Airlifter April 20, 2018 NEWS 5 Buddy Bison program comes to Little Rock AFB By Airman 1st Class Grace Nichols 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Services Activity is partnering with the National Park Trust to bring the Buddy Bison Great Outdoors Challenge to Little Rock Air Force Base from March 31 to Aug. 11. Buddy Bison is a free program allowing children and families to participate in activities such as camping, canoeing, fishing and hiking while exploring local state and national parks. Funding from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Military Community and Family Policy is enabling the Air Force to pilot the program at eight bases throughout the Air Force. The success of the program will determine its extension to other installations in the future. The program promotes healthy-habits with parents and their kids in the local community, said Otis Williams, 19th Force Support Squadron Youth Center program manager. This a good way to see the area for families who have just moved here. U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Codie Collins Children from the Proctor & Gamble Andre Roberts Football ProCamp play football in June 2017 at Little Rock Air Force Base. Andres Roberts, an Atlanta Falcons wide receiver and former military child, worked side by side with volunteers to help teach children different football skills. Participating children receive a Buddy Bison passport or bingo card to collect stamps at Buddy Bison stops found on the base and parks in the community. The children will receive various awards for a certain number of activities attended. Most people in the military try to live a healthy lifestyle, and this promotes that for kids in a fun way. Williams said. The event kicked off at the 2018 Family Fest at the Warfit Pavilion March 31. Children may sign-up and receive their stamp cards and a free Buddy Bison stuffed animal toy. In addition to Family Fest, the 19th FSS Youth Center will host multiple Buddy Bison events at different locations throughout the state for both members and non-members. Although not every installation will be enrolled in the Buddy Bison program, all can participate in NPT s Kids to Parks Day, held the third Saturday of May. According to the NPT s website, the national day of outdoor play encourages exploring outdoor recreation, learning about science, technology, engineering and math; and embracing park stewardship. For more information about the program or to get involved, contact Otis Williams at For information about Kids to Parks Day, visit www. parktrust.org/kids-to-parks-day/. The office works toward the elimination of unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment against military and civilian employees, family members and retirees based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or sex, to include age and disability for Department of Defense civilian employees. Members who feel they fall under any of these categories may speak to an EO representative to find a solution. It is important for commanders to foster a positive human relations environment within their unit, said Staff Sgt. Joshua Wilson, 19th EO office equal opportunity advisor. The EO office provides subject matter experts to advise commanders and organizations throughout the base to identify, assess and remove EO barriers. Additionally, the office hosts special observances for different cultures and heritages. 8 8 FEATURE Combat Airlifter April 20, 2018 green flag Little Rock Delivering military reach with agile combat airlift Story by Airman 1st Class Codie Collins 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Personnel from the 34th Combat Training Squadron and U.S. Army personnel collaborated with coalition forces from France, New Zealand and Australia during the Green Flag Little Rock exercise April 6-15 located at Little Rock Air Force Base and Ft. Polk, La. Green Flag is a live joint-training-tactical exercise which maximizes proficiencies in command and control, planning, airlift and air mobility support operations. Our coalition and joint partners are critical to projecting and sustaining combat airlift across the globe, said U.S. Air Force Col. Gerald Donohue, 19th Airlift Wing commander. Exercises such as Green Flag provide us with opportunities to train together, improve our interoperability and strengthen our partnerships, all of which enable us to provide agile combat airlift at a moment s notice, anywhere in the world. Goals of Green Flag are to improve mission management, situational awareness and weather planning. Through focused determination, thorough communication and total force integration, these goals were met. Green Flag allows the Airmen to have an opportunity to do their job in a static environment before entering a real-world situation, said Master Sgt. Corey Long, 19th Operations Support Squadron chief of training. Additionally, Green Flag allows an array of military forces to hone their skills in a variety strategies which will benefit future operations with Air Force allies. The training permitted the U.S. Air Force and international partners to work together and learn from one another, Long said. It s important to train with our partners so we re better prepared to work in a real-world situation. No two exercises are the same, which helps the mobility enterprise continually challenge their warfighting skills, while providing real-world experiences with partners they may not be able to get with home-station training. The Green Flag Little Rock exercise is the premiere Mobility Air Force training which occurs four times annually. It continuously evolves to prepare the war fighter to perform in any environment.
