Leveraging Tech to Improve Officer First, the low hanging fruit: Seat belts Use them! Body armor Wear it! Reflective gear Put it on! Don t assume this is already happening! The Dangers of the Road Operational Track 13
Being Seen Is Important! This is Not a Time for Stealth! Operational Track 14
Leveraging Today s Tech In-Car Cameras Lowering Speed-Threshold Activation Track & Review (Also check authorized runs) Educate and Address Recognize those who do the right thing. Hold accountable those who don t. Operational Track 15
Leveraging Tech In-Car Cameras Suggestions: Emphasize the officer safety aspect of lower speeds. Verbalize legitimate high-speed runs. (Overtaking a speeder, 80/40) Verbalize clearing an intersection on code runs (clear left, clear right, etc.) Leveraging Tech Body-Worn Cameras Officer survival also means career survival and this tech is a gamechanger. Provides more of the officer s view compared to in-car video. Superb training tool. Reviews serve as catalyst for change. Operational Track 16
Operational Track 17
Leveraging Tech Dispatch Systems Location/Premise/Person History Commitment and Communication AVL/GPS Some systems can provide realtime speed awareness & notification. i Check w/vendor. 25 Leveraging Tech In-Car Computers Proper mounting. Check crash history! Log-in and screen saver advisory. Encourage a safety culture w/ messages. Consider screen & keyboard lockout at a preset speed. NBC News Distracted Cops Operational Track 25
Leveraging Tech License Plate Reader Systems Can be used for alerting officers to vehicles associated with dangerous individuals. Think in terms of premise history in CAD. Training issue: Advisory NOT actionable. And There s Always the Low-Tech Reminder Operational Track 26
Closing Thoughts Predictable really is preventable. Do a risk assessment andaddressthe address issues. It is very important to get buy in. Officer safety is the key. Family angle! Use Below 100 to educate and motivate. Closing Thoughts Emphasize role of supervisor and FTO. Courageousconversations should bepart of the department culture. Catch cops doing things right and recognize. Discipline may be necessary. Technology should never impede or diminish vehicle safety. Plan ahead. We can do this, we must do this. Operational Track 27
To every man there comes in his lifetime that special moment when he is figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered a chance to do a very special thing, unique to him and fitted to his talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared or unqualified for that which would be his finest hour. -Winston Churchill The time is now! The life you save may be your own. Operational Track 28
