1 APRIL 2018 NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR The Chamber of Commerce works to be involved in all areas of community development. One issue that has plagued many businesses in our community is the lack of a qualified workforce, particularly in the skilled and trade professions. The Chamber has partnered with the Cherokee Schools, WITCC, Cherokee Industrial Corporation, and Cherokee Area Economic Development Corporation to organize a career fair for 7 th grade students. We hope to open their eyes to a number career opportunities and impress with these students the importance of these careers in our community. We have identified 12 career paths which we will focus on, and are excited to be using a number of local businesses to present these topics. Topics will include: agriculture, transportation, CNA/nursing, construction, plumbing/hvac/ electrical, auto mechanics, police science, welding/ manufacturing, banking and small business ownership. Each of the careers that students will learn about are jobs that they can do right here in Cherokee. We realize this is a longterm strategy, but we want students to start thinking now about these careers as they choose their High School Classes and begin planning for their life after graduation. Our ultimate goal is that, as adults, they choose Cherokee as their home to Live, Work and do Business. The program meets Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) requirements, and will cover the following topics: providing safe food; contamination and allergens; the safe food handler; the flow of food - purchasing, receiving, storage, preparation and service; cleaning and sanitizing; pest management; facilities and equipment; and food safety management systems. 4 Cherokee Loyalty Card Program Program Overview for Businesses What is it: The Cherokee Loyalty Card is an incentive program, rewarding customers for shopping with Cherokee Chamber Member Businesses. How does it work? The Loyalty Card is a punch card the size of a business card. Each card contains $5, $10 and $20 punch options, totally $200. (5 - $20; 8- $10 and 4 - $5) Businesses will Punch the card at the check-out. Each card will require $200 in sales to be full. There is a $400 (2 cards) limit per sale. The card will include a space for the customer s name, phone number, and address. The back of the card will list participating businesses. Once the card is full, the customer can enter the drawing by returning the card to the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce or other participating collection points. A winner will be drawn on the last business day of every month for $100 in Cherokee Chamber Bucks. There is no cost to participate in this program. However, businesses that wish to sponsor the monthly prize drawings A complete explanation of the program will be ed to businesses, or is available at the Chamber.
