It is a welcome change as we have more time to visit with family and friends and do things like watch baseball games on TV, go see movies, or read novels. For me it is also a time to write articles for our newsletter. I hope you enjoyed the social events and information sharing meetings that were held September through May. I refer to the September luncheon at Peridia, with guest speaker Matt Manfra, the Marina Jack boat cruise in late October, the early January luncheon at Peridia, with guest speaker, Jordana Silberman scholarship recipient, the Sarasota airport tour and lunch at Captain Brian s in late February, the spring training baseball game at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota,in mid March, and our annual Beach House luncheon event in May. Our five game watch parties at Sarasota Brewing Company were well attended. Especially the Rutgers vs. Iowa State Pinstripe Bowl game televised on December 30. It was the final Rutgers football game where Greg Schiano appeared as the head coach of the Scarlet Knights. Who would have predicted that Schiano would become the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We now look to Kyle Flood, Schiano s successor, to lead Rutgers to a winning season. Another major change came with the announcement that effective September 1, 2012, Robert L. Barchi will become the 20th President of Rutgers University. As in the past members of the club volunteered to represent Rutgers at college fairs held in the counties of Sarasota and Manatee. Due to lack of funds in the budget, Undergraduate Admissions found it necessary to discontinue the Rutgers Book Award program. However, our club was able to continue presenting the Rutgers Book Award at ten high schools without aid from the University. The book award presenters included Stephen Attles, Gus Andolino, Marvin Smith, Martin Soble, Jacquelyn Cress, Barbara Jacoby, Ihor Hron and Chip Churchill. Those club members that attended the January 8 luncheon at Peridia met Jordana Silberman, first recipient of the Rutgers Club of Sarasota-Manatee/Art Jacoby Scholarship. Having been invited to be our guest speaker, she told us about her experience as a first semester college student at Rutgers and how much she appreciated receiving the scholarship. At the BeachHouse luncheon a motion to send a $ donation to the Rutgers University Foundation for the scholarship fund was approved. A check was sent to the attention of John Pearson. He replied, I want to thank you and the Rutgers Club of Sarastoa/ Manatee for this gift. It will be deposited in the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee-Art Jacoby Scholarship Fund. We deeply appreciate this show of support as we strive to build this scholarship fund to $100, and beyond. On the topic of support I have seen an increase in the number of Rutgers Alumni and guests attending our meetings and events. I hope this trend continues. Chip Churchill, President

Matt Manfra, Guest Speaker I September Luncheon At our September 18 luncheon meeting alumni club members and guests welcomed guest speaker, Matt Manfra, Director of Outreach Programs, Department of Alumni Relations, Rutgers University. His topic was How to Best Engage Alumni. To support his title theme he used sub topics: Social Activities Educational Opportunities Scholarship Fund Raising Recruitment A question and answer period followed his presentation. During his tenure at Rutgers, Matt helped increase the number of alumni clubs, developed the first two New Jersey based clubs, and produced a Best Practices Document in use by Rutgers alumni clubs today. 2

Scholarship Recipient Honored Mission Encourage Rutgers Alumni who reside in municipalities located in Sarasota and Manatee counties to attend meetings and events sponsored by Rutgers University and by the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee, thereby supporting the mission of the Rutgers University Alumni Association, Advance Rutgers University by Engaging All Alumni. Perpetuate the programs of having club members volunteer to represent Rutgers at college fairs and present the Rutgers Book Award to juniors at high schools in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Keep Rutgers Alumni informed about University and club events via newsletters and periodic updates on the club website. Conduct meetings for information sharing and socialization. Engage in activities that help foster school spirit and create new friendships. Among the guests were Raquel and Scott Silberman, parents of our special guest, Jordana Silberman, first recipient of the Rutgers Club of Sarasota- Manatee/Art Jacoby Endowed Scholarship. Jordana had sent a letter to the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee. In the letter dated September 12, 2012, she wrote: I am pleased to hear that I am the recipient of your scholarship award! I want to thank you, for without this, it may have been difficult for me to attend Rutgers, which so far has been an extremely enjoyable year! Because of this generous scholarship, my time at Rutgers has been a dream come true, experiencing all these new things that I would have probably never had in Florida. I am grateful for the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee giving me this opportunity. I don't know what I would have done without it. Your generosity has inspired me to help others, just as you have for me and I look forward to an amazing freshman year at this truly prestigious school, Rutgers. Speaking to the luncheon guests, Jordana told us she is very happy at Rutgers, enjoying the social life and being active in Rutgers Hillel House as well as the Chabad house which flourishes with Jewish life. She somehow finds the time to maintain a job at the Rutgers Zone, an arcade for students. We thanked Jordana for coming to Peridia and wished her all the best in the future. 3

4 Airport Tour & Luncheon Members and guests of the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee were invited to a tour at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. The tour began at the Firehouse where highly trained Firemen demonstrated how they respond to emergencies at the airport utilizing fire trucks, special equipment and apparel. The next tour was at the control tower which proved to be very interesting. The last presentation took place at builders row where club member retired Captain Martin Sobel is constructing a plane. Captain Sobel is the president of the EAA Chapter 180 at Sarasota. At the completion of the tours RU Alumni and guests shared lunch at Captain Brian s Seafood Restaurant located adjacent to the airport. 4

5 Spring Training Baseball Game at Ed Smith Stadium Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays Rutgers Alumni and guests attended a spring training baseball game on March 13, 2012 at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. RU Alumni and guests occupied three rows in the reserved grandstand section. We consumed hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, beer and wine. Seats for the game were located in the reserved grandstand section. We got to see many of the Tampa Bay Rays in action before the start of the Professional Baseball season. The game ended after 10 innings. The score was Orioles 10 and the Rays 10. 5

6 Annual Club Luncheon Meeting at BeachHouse Restaurant Alumni and guests attended a luncheon on May 5, 2012 at the BeachHouse Restaurant in Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. Lunch was served on the outdoor north pavilion where there was a beautiful view of the beach and gulf waters. There were giveaways and prizes.
