2 Department Activities FITNESS EQUIPMENT: The Physical Fitness Facility at the new police building has been outfitted with all the aerobic and strength equipment that was recently ordered. The training and orientation of employees in its use is currently underway. DEPARTMENT TOUR: The police department hosted several members of the Surprise Police Department for a tour of the police facility in preparation for construction of their own new facility. DARE GRADUATION: The DARE class graduated, which concludes Officer Miller s first year as DARE/School Resource Officer. VERDE LANE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: On April 28, the Verde Lane Neighborhood Watch Group presented a letter of thanks to the police department for assistance in the enhancement of security for the neighborhood and the acquisition of two additional street lights for the neighborhood. FAMILY ADVOCACY CENTER: On April 26, several members of the police department attended the grand opening ceremony for the Family Advocacy Center in Eloy. Major Cases & Investigative Events: ARMED ROBBERIES: Count on Cash a local business, was robbed at gunpoint and several thousand dollars were stolen. The suspect robbed the Sunstate bank two weeks later and was apprehended a few days later in Texas. Investigator Pacheco and Sergeant Walker continued working on the 2004 Stockman s Bank Robbery and met with a federal prosecutor concerning the investigation, which may result in additional arrests in that investigation. CASES FOR REVIEW: Investigations sent 22 felony cases to the Pinal County Attorney s Office, four cases were approved for felony charges, three cases were deferred prosecution, fifteen case are still pending or on the Grand Jury waiting list. FBI INVESTIGATION: Investigator Pacheco was assigned to assist the FBI in a classified investigation in the City of Coolidge. DEATH INVESTIGATIONS: Investigators responded to two death scenes. Both were determined to be the result of natural causes. CHILD DROWNING: Officers responded to a near drowning call in which a child fell into a canal. The child was not breathing at the time of the call. Upon arrival officers found that 15 month old Julian Ibarra had fallen into the canal located along the south side of the property. After falling into the canal the child was sucked through an opening releasing water into the field. The child was located by his sister in the field laying face down in the water. She initiated CPR until medical personnel and officers arrived. The child was flown to a valley hospital and is now recovering.

3 CRIMINAL TRIAL: Investigator Pacheco and Sergeant Walker prepared for trial on Clinton Slaughter on a Forgery case. The trial concluded with a guilty verdict. COUNTERFEITING INVESTIGATION: Officer Martinez attempted to stop a motorist for a stop sign violation and the driver attempted to evade him. After a small chase through a neighborhood involving two additional officers, Officer Tercero stopped the vehicle. While investigating the subject s actions and examining the interior of the vehicle, Officer Martinez observed an open wallet lying in plain view. The visible contents appeared to fresh $20 bills, but the bills did not look legitimate. Upon closer examination, Martinez found them to be counterfeit bills, all with the same serial number. The subject was arrested and a search of the vehicle uncovered several items of stolen mail. Over the next four days, the investigation continued and a search warrant at a private residence was executed. This was the same home the suspect was originally seen leaving on the day of the arrest. During that warrant 61 counterfeit bills in twenties, fives, tens and ones, several computers, approximately 20 hard drives, printers, scanners, and copiers were seized as evidence of counterfeiting. In addition, a small amount of explosives were also located in the form of railroad torpedoes which is an impact explosive. DPS was called and removed the explosive devices. FLORENCE POLICE ELDERLY ABUSE: A mutual-aide investigation was completed for the Florence Police Department regarding elderly abuse. The case was determined to be unfounded. TRAINING/MEETINGS: Sergeant Walker attended Protecting Children Online Unit Commander Training. Investigator Vance attended Forensic Interview Level Two Training. Investigator Pacheco attended Computer Based Crimes Training. BURGLARY SUSPECT APPREHENDED: Officers responded to a burglary from auto call and while traveling along Vah Ki Inn Rd in the 300 block West, Officer Narreau observed a subject jump from one yard to another in the construction area behind the church. Narreau went to the home under construction and found the subject attempting to hide from him on the second floor of the framed home. The subject possessed numerous items taken from vehicles in the area, including a check book from the vehicle of the original burglary call and a helmet cover identical to ones found in the burglary victim s vehicle. The helmet covers were later discovered to have been stolen from a storage shed in the area. Throughout the morning, additional stolen property was recovered from the alleyways in the area. DRUGS SEIZED/SUSPECT ARRESTED: Officer Tercero received information from a concerned citizen involving suspected drug activity at a local residence. Investigators assisted with a knockand-talk which resulted in the seizure of approximately 140 grams of marijuana packaged for sell. The suspect was arrested and he admitted to possessing the marijuana for sell. DRUGS/EXPLOSIVES: Officer Martinez responded to a call of a burglary in progress. During his investigation he made contact at the residence in question and contacted two subjects who reside there. Officer Martinez detected a strong smell of burning marijuana coming from the opened front door and when he confronted the occupants, they admitted to smoking marijuana. During the search for the marijuana, officers also found three devices which appeared to be explosives, so the house was secured and an explosives tech from PCSO was called to assist. The devices were determined to be explosive (CO2 cartridges with green fuses) and were destroyed by the explosives tech. Both subjects were arrested and charged.

4 CONSTRUCTION THEFT: While Officer Alvarado conducted surveillance at the Meritage Homes (aka Heartland Ranch), he observed a truck exiting the area with several pieces of lumber in the bed of the truck. When he checked with another officer, it was determined that the truck had entered the area with its bed empty. A traffic stop was initiated and when asked, the driver had no reason for being at the housing track. It was later determined that the subject had been at a house under construction without permission and he had removed 14 pieces of lumber from the construction site. The subject was arrested and during the arrest, 9.1 grams of methamphetamine, several items of drug and smoking paraphernalia, two fully loaded firearms (1 semi-auto pistol and 1 revolver), and burglary tools (lock pick set) were located in his vehicle.
