1 1 SLOHS College & Career Center Regional, State and National Scholarships Below are just a few of the regional, state and national scholarships open to all high school seniors. These are not scholarships that are restricted to SLO High School graduates. For more opportunities, check out or other free scholarship search engines to assist you in your college financial aid resources. The SLOHS Local Scholarship Application is available online in late December. NOTE: Deadlines change from year to year; this list serves only as a guide. Scholarship Opportunities Due in October National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) Recognition & Talent Search Contact: Dena Willman, 800 Brickell Ave., Suite 500, Miami, FL 33131, (800) 970-ARTS, Fax: (305) info@nfaa.org; Eligibility: Senior high school students who are pursuing a career in the area of dance, music, visual arts, theater, writing, and film, etc. Must be between 17 and 18 years old and a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Award: Up to $3,000. Deadline: October 1 United States Senate Youth Program Contact: Ms. Erin Dimmitt, USSYP Coordinator, Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, CDE, 1430 N Street, Suite 5602, Sacramento, (916) edimmitt@cde.ca.gov, Established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. The 50th Anniversary program will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 3-10, Two student leaders from each state will spend a week in Washington experiencing their national government in action. Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 College Scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Deadline: October 1 The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Through this competition, students have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school. It is administered by The College Board and funded by the Siemens Foundation. from $1,000- $100,000 Deadline: October 3

2 WENDY S High School HEISMAN Scholarship This award honors both male and female high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics and student leadership. Eligibility: must have at least a 3.0 GPA and participates in at least one school-sponsored sport. Applications are available online at If SLOHS has a lot of applicants, even the school could win some cash! Deadline: October 3 AES engineering Scholarship AES is offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluated the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to the following question: What impact will the Natural Disasters of 2010/11 have on the global economy? How should these events affect future political, business and personal decisions? A minimum 3.0 GPA is required and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted first to a local chapter (see website or contact for more information), where the local chapter will forward selected applications for consideration at the national level. Financial need is not considered. Award: $1,500. Deadline: October 8 National Merit Scholarship Corporation Contact: School Guidance Counselor, 1560 Sherman Avenue, Suite 200, Evanston, IL , (847) Eligibility: Students sign up for scholarship by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Students must be high school students enrolling in college or a university the following year. Must be a U.S. citizen. Award: $2,500. Deadline: October 15 The Dreamer Challenge Scholarship Run by the California Museum and sponsored by Comcast, this competition asks California high school seniors to describe how their unique dream will change the world. The manifestation of your dream can be entered in a variety of mediums: essay, video, audio recording, artwork, presentation poem, etc. Award is $ Deadline: October 15 2

3 3 College Jump Start Scholarship Applicants must write a 250 word essay on hard work and educational goals. Applicants must be committed to using education to better their life and that of their family and/or community. Apply online at Awards of $250, $750 and $1,500 Deadline: October 17 Horatio Alger California Scholarship Program Thirty- seven $4,000 scholarships awarded to student of critical financial need (AGI below $50,000) who exhibit integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to higher education. Involvement in co-curricular and community activities a plus. Stokes Educational Scholarship Program Open to high school seniors, particularly minorities. Must have SAT score of 1600 or ACT score of 25. *By participating in the program, you agree to work for NSA for at least oneand one-half times the length of study upon graduation.* Must be planning to major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering. Award: Tuition and fees paid for in full, guaranteed work after graduation Deadline: October 31 Coca-Cola Scholars Program Applicants are evaluated based on leadership, community commitment, academic achievement and part-time employment. 250 seniors- at least 2 from every state will receive a minimum of $10,000 and a trip to Atlanta over Spring Break. 50 student receive $20,000. Initial applications available at: Deadline: October 31 Prudential Spirit of Community Award Eligibility: Students must be in grades 5-12 from any state. Student must show participation in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application. Award: $1,000-$5,000 and a trip to Washington D.C. Apply at Deadline: October 31 Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsor this $30,000 scholarship for students in 9-12 th grade. The essay topic is Is ther pride in serving in our military? A essay and recording based on the topic should be 305 minutes long. Application and information at: -of-democracy.. 4 Vacancy.com Blog Scholarship Scholarship for students who have their own blog by providing a short essay and placing on own blog. Amount: $500. The winner will be selected by a Vacancy.com judging panel based on purely subjective criteria such as "creativity," "insight," and / or "it made me laugh so hard I got the hiccups". There is no minimum length requirement. Feel free to use images or videos. You must convince us of the awesome nature of your ideal apartment, and you must include a link to a property listing page on Vacancy.com. If there's no link, the entry will be disqualified. Also, you must post the essay on your own blog or website and send us the URL. Don't just the essay... that won't count. Deadline: November 1 Intel STS Science Talent Search Scholarship The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) is the nation s most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors. Since 1942, first in partnership with Westinghouse and beginning in 1998 with Intel, SSP has provided a national stage for the country's best and brightest young scientists to present original research to nationally recognized professional scientists. Eligibility: High school seniors must submit a written report or an independent research report in science, mathematics or engineering. More information and online applications at: Awards: 40 finalists invited to Washington DC for competition and $630,000 in awards dispersed. Deadline: November 1 Stokes Educational Scholarship Program Open to high school seniors, particularly minorities. Award: Tuition and fees paid for in full, guaranteed work after graduation Deadline: November 15 PBA Sally Beauty Scholarships Seven $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to high school graduates desiring to enter the cosmetology profession. Essay, letters of recommendation and transcripts required. Application available at Deadline: November 15 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Male and female students compete separately for identical awards. To be eligible, you need to be a high school senior and a US Citizen. Selection is based on a point system which includes academic achievement, leadership, extra-curricular activities and financial need. Please return all completed applications to College and Career Center, or your nearest Elks Lodge. Deadline: November 30 Love your Body Poster Contest Sponsored by the National Organization for Women Foundation. Posters should be graphically attractive and use a dynamic message. We especially look for images that demonstrate beauty is not limited by body size, body type, ethnicity, age or physical appearance. The winning posters will be displayed in schools and other public settings, so please consider this when designing your poster. Award: Contact for details Deadline: December 31 Scholarship Opportunities Due in January Toyota Community Scholars Program This program is designed to provide financial support to students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and a willingness to contribute to the betterment of their school and their community. Eligibility is based on nomination by school, senior status, an average of 3.0 GPA or better, actively involved in a service organization or project, be a US citizen or permanent resident and plan to pursue an undergraduate 6

7 7 degree at an accredited four-year college or university. On-line nominations and applications are found at: Deadline: January 4 Gates Millennium Scholars Program Any graduating senior with the following ethic backgrounds may apply. African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American. Applicants must be either US citizens or legal permanent residents how have maintained a minimum 3.3 GPA. Selection will be based on Leadership, Community Service, Extra curricular Activities. Applicants must also meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility as determined by the FAFSA. On-line applications are found at: GMS will select 1,000 talented students each year to receive a goodthrough-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. We provide Gates Millennium Scholars with personal and professional development through our leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career. Award: Program covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and living expenses not paid for by grants and scholarships already committed as part of the recipient s financial aid package. Deadline: January 11 Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship The Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program is open to high school juniors who are enrolled in accredited public or private high schools in the United States. You must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, and plan to further your training or education in any accredited certification, licensing or training program or institution of higher education. You must also demonstrate accomplishment in three of the four following areas: special talents, leadership, community service, obstacles overcome. 8 Pacific Gas and Electric ( PG &E) Employee Associations The Employee Resource Groups at PG&E will reward college-bound students for their academic achievements and community service who reside in a P G & E service area. The InspirAsian Employee Resource Group will be awarding at least 10 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each The Black Employee Resource Group offers 10 or more deserving students will receive a scholarship in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 The Samahan ( Filipino) Employee Resource Group is awarding scholarships in amounts up to $2,000 to at least 10 deserving college-bound high school seniors The Latino Employee Resource Group is awarding several scholarships in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 to eligible high school seniors. The PrideNetwork Employee Resource Group awards $5,000 scholarships to at least 5 students for their service to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The Women s Network Employee Resource Group administers awards to deserving students who reside in PG&E s service area. Deadline for most PG & E Scholarships: January 17 equality Scholarship Collaborative: Any graduating high school student residing in Northern or Central California. Scholarships are awarded to applicants that have demonstrated service to the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community. Applicants must be planning to attend a two-year or four-year post secondary institution, including trade schools. Application and information can be obtained at: Award: 14 $5000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, one $5000 scholarship to a nursing student, and one $2000 scholarship to a medical student. Deadline: January 17 The William S. Davila Scholarship Fund Any graduating senior working in the food industry or sons and daughters of parents working in the food industry may apply. (Food Industry is defined as retail supermarkets companies, manufacturers, brokers or distributors of food products sold in retail food stores) Individuals working in a fast food or regular restaurant are NOT eligible to apply. Students must be planning to enroll in a full-time course of study at an accredited four-year college or university. Application: Deadline: January 20 McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship Any high school senior who has owned and operated a genuine business or non-profit is eligible to apply. The applicant must have had at least one paid employee and planning to attend a 4-year college located within the 50 states. Apply online at ckelveyfoundation.org. Deadline: January 25 Dean Children Memorial Scholarship Eligibility: Applicant must be an undergraduate pursuing a degree in Education. Must also reside from one of the following areas of California: San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Ventura, Riverside, Orange, or San Diego. Award: $5,000 8

Award: $500-$14,000 Deadline: February 1 Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel s Scholarship Fund Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be pursuing a bachelor s degree, maintains a GPA of 2.75 or higher, and be attending a public university in their state of residence. Award: up to $20,000. Must be a high school senior, college freshman or sophomore. Award: $2,000; Deadline: February 14 Elks Legacy Awards Any child or grandchild of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2006 is eligible to apply for the Elks National Foundation Legacy Award. The applicant must be a

10 10 high school senior and apply through the related member s Elk Lodge. SAT or ACT test scores are required. Applications and more information can be obtained online at: Award is $1,000 renewable for four years. Deadline: February 1 Elks Vocational Training Scholarship Planning to attend a vocational or technical training program or school? This year the Elks plan to award 58 Grants of $1,000 with the option to renew to grant the following year. This program is open to any US citizen who wishes to gain occupational skills for a specific job. Selection criteria is based on whether the student is qualified for the planned field of work, whether the application is completely filled out and a score rating based on student motivation, need, skills, academic work and neatness. Deadline: February 1 Ellen Masin Persina Scholarship Contact: National Press Club, Attn: General Manager Office, th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C (202) , Eligibility: This scholarship is open to minority high school seniors who have been accepted to college and plan to pursue a career in journalism. Applicants must demonstrate an ongoing interest in journalism through work in high school and/or other media, submit a one-page essay on why they want to pursue a career in journalism and have at least a 2.75 GPA in high school. Award: $2,500, renewable; Deadline: February 1 Monsanto Company- Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program Must be pursuing a two- or four-year degree in any area related to agriculture. Minimum SAT score of 850 out of 1600 or 1320 out of 2400 or minimum ACT score of 18 required. Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale required. Applicant's family must be actively engaged in corn, cotton, grain sorghum, production agriculture, soybean, vegetable production or wheat. Scholarships are available for both FFA and non-ffa members. Award: $1,500, non-renewable. Deadline: February 15 Alzheimer s Foundation of America-AFA Teens Alzheimer s Awareness College Scholarship: AFA offers an annual scholarship to a deserving college-bound senior. Write an essay about how Alzheimer s disease has changed or impacted your life and what you have learned about yourself, your family and/or your community. Applicant must be a minority FFA member interested in pursuing a degree in agriculture. The following ethnic groups may apply: African-Americans, Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, Alaska Natives, or American Indians. They may be residents of any state, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or the District of Columbia. Award: One $10,000 and three $5,000 scholarships are awarded Deadline: February 15 Best Scholarships This year the Best Scholarship Program will award 1,000 scholarships of $1,000 each to students in grades 9-12 living in the U.S. or Puerto Rico who plan to enter a fulltime undergraduate course of study upon high school graduation. Students need solid grades, involved in volunteer and community activities, and /or work experience. Apply at Deadline: February 15 U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program: Forty $1, scholarships awarded in a random drawing. No essay and no minimum GPA. Programs runs October Through February. Apply online at: Deadlines are rolling C.I.F. /Farmers Scholar Athlete of the Year The best of CIF athletes (with at least 2 years of varsity play) along with a GPA over 3.5 qualifies high school seniors to apply for this statewide scholarship which awards $5000 to a male and female athlete for the state and $2000 for each section. Deadline: February 26 Sons of Italy Scholarship Program Students with verifiable Italian heritage may apply online at: Submit a typewritten original essay of words about a personal experience which demonstrated or generated pride in your Italian heritage. Letters of recommendation, essay and application required. Award is 10 to 12 merit-based scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. Deadline: February 26 CORE College Opportunities Resources for Education Must be of Chicano / Latino descent and an undocumented student. Must be or will be a high school/ged graduate who will enroll for the first time in an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Due to limited funds, students enrolled in college after they have graduated will not be considered. Must demonstrate financial need and must demonstrate academic potential and promise.
