The newsletter is published to inform Angus breeders, youth, allied industry interests and friends of the breed how Foundation funds are used and provide information about opportunities for charitable giving to further advance the Foundation s mission. ANGUS FOUNDATION STAFF Milford Jenkins, President Chris Stephens, Assistant Director of Development Kris Sticken, Administrative Assistant The Angus Foundation Heifer Package has been the premier fundraiser for the Angus Foundation to generate funds for Angus youth, education and research efforts. Generous Angus breeders from across the country stepped up as buyers on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) Angus Bull Sale in Denver, Colo., helped to raise $265,750 in support of the Angus Foundation. It was standing room only in the historic Stadium Arena when the Angus Foundation Heifer Package sold for $170,000 to longtime Angus supporters, Charles W. and Judy Herbster of Herbster Angus Farms, Falls City, Neb. We are honored to support the Angus Foundation by once again purchasing the Angus Foundation Heifer Package, says Charles W. Herbster, Herbster Angus Farms Chief Executive Officer and President. We strongly support Angus youth activities, and this is a great way to ensure a bright future for youth who want to be involved in the Angus business. The heifer that headlined the 2017 Angus Foundation Heifer Package was Basin Lucy 6265, donated by Doug and Sharon Stevenson, Basin Angus Ranch, Joliet, Mont. Herbster s purchase of Basin Lucy 6265 marks five years running that Herbster Angus Farms has bought the Angus Foundation Heifer Package. The unrestricted funds raised by the sale of the Angus Foundation Heifer Package will be put to good use increasing opportunities for Angus youth through scholarships and leadership development activities, supporting educational events for Angus breeders and funding important research that will impact the Angus industry, says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation President. Since its inception in 1980, the heifer package has raised more than $2.25 million for education, youth and research investments through the Angus Foundation. Members of the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) presented this year s heifer package before the start of the auction. In addition to the heifer, Herbster Angus Farms will receive 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Ill.; free transportation to the buyer s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Story continues on page 2

4 Angus Foundation Funds Raising the Bar in Iowa & South Dakota At Raising the Bar conferences, Angus youth are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, meet new people and learn what life is like in other parts of Angus country. More than 50 members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recently took part in leadership development and learned more about the beef cattle business. At Raising the Bar conferences, Angus youth are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, meet new people and learn what life is like in other parts of Angus country. NJAA members met March 2-5 at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, La., and April 6-9 at Iowa State University. The National Junior Angus Board has planned some fantastic events in Baton Rouge and Des Moines, says Jaclyn Clark, Director, American Angus Association Events & Education. We encourage all of our junior members to consider attending one of the conferences. Raising the Bar at LSU welcomed 21 juniors from 12 state junior Angus associations to Baton Rouge, La., where they toured the LSU campus, including the School of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture. Participants also toured three Angus operations: Continental Genetics, 12 Star Ranch and K Bar Ranch and got to see what it s like raising Angus cattle in a southern state. While there, they also got to experience Cajun culture. In April, Raising the Bar was hosted at Iowa State University. Nearly 30 Angus juniors traveled to Ames, Iowa, visiting Hawkeye Breeders, Blood Dairy and touring the Iowa State University campus, meat lab, Hansen Ag Center and beef teaching farm. The group visited two Angus operations: Nichols Farms and Glenn Rowe s. Attendees heard from former NJAA members Michael Cropp, an ISU graduate student; Chris Cassady, ISU professor and livestock judging team coach; Mike Anderson, 4-H Youth Development, talked about retinal scanning in Iowa; and Patrick Gunn, cow/calf specialist. To learn more about the Raising the Bar Conference, please visit Photos by Sarah Hill Fun for a Cause: Angus Foundation Golf Tournament 4 Join the Angus Foundation as they golf for a good cause! The 17th annual Angus Foundation golf tournament will be held on Tuesday, July 11, at The Legacy Golf Club, Norwalk, Iowa. The event will be held in conjunction with the 2017 National Junior Angus Show. The golf tournament is a fun way for Angus Foundation supporters to raise valuable dollars for Angus youth, education and research initiatives, says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation President. We look forward to this major fundraiser every year. NuTech Biosciences & Kentucky Nutrition Services, Lawrenceburg, Ky., is the 2017 golf tournament sponsor. The company purchased the sponsorship during the 2017 Angus Bull Sale at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., this past January. Registration is open until June 26. 6 Two Couples Honored for Angus Youth Support: Honorary Angus Foundation The 2017 Honorary Angus Foundation inductees are recognized for their commitment to the future leaders of the Angus breed. Since 1985, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Board of Directors has recognized and thanked those who have gone above and beyond in their support of Angus youth. The 2017 inductees will be recognized on Friday, July 14, during the National Junior Angus Show in Des Moines, at 11 AM in the Pioneer Pavilion. This year s inductees are Paul and Lynn Hill, Champion Hill Angus, Bidwell, Ohio, and in memory of Terry and Pam Bailey, High Roller Angus, Center, Texas. Paul and Lynn Hill, Champion Hill Angus, Bidwell, Ohio In 1985, the NJAA inducted seven Angus breeders. Each year, up to three inductees are honored by the NJAA. Any member of the American Angus Association is eligible to In memory of Terry and Pam Bailey, High Roller Angus, Center, Texas nominate individuals or organizations for the Honorary Angus Foundation. A complete list of previous honorees can be found online. First Talon Intern, Host Ranch The Angus Foundation is pleased to introduce Jessica Janssen, Fowler, Ind., as the first Talon Youth Education Learning Program Intern. Janssen will intern with Maher Angus Ranch, Morristown, S.D. The Talon Youth Education Learning Program internship is the legacy of Camron Cam Cooper of Talon Ranch. Cooper set up the Angus/Talon Youth Education Learning Program Endowment Fund in 2009 to be a holistic educational experience for students. The internship program pairs motivated Angus youth with working registered Angus breeders/ranches to provide youth valuable education and work experience for a summer. The internship program is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent college graduates under age 25 who are majoring in an agricultural field of study. Janssen is a junior at Purdue University, where she is pursuing an animal science degree. She has an associate s in agriculture from Ivy Tech Community College, Lafayette, Ind. Janssen s career goal is to become a beef nutritionist. I look at this internship as an opportunity to expand my knowledge of beef cattle nutrition, which will help me be a more well-rounded candidate when I enter the workforce following graduation, Janssen says. In addition, Janssen is a 12-year member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and Indiana Junior Angus Association. She served as the 2014 Indiana Angus Princess and competed as Indiana representative in showmanship at the 2012 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). Janssen s leadership extends beyond the Angus industry. She currently serves as Indiana Junior Charolais Association president, a role she s held for two years. At Purdue University, Janssen participates in Collegiate FFA and the Indiana Junior Beef Cattle Association. She has also received her American FFA Degree. Jessica is just the type of student that Cam Cooper wanted to provide with opportunities in the beef industry, says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. We believe she will gain a tremendous amount from her internship experience with Maher Angus Ranch. Maher Angus Ranch is a 550-head registered Angus herd on 8,000 acres in northern South Dakota. The ranch has previously hosted a foreign intern and hosts tours for other cattle producers. The ranch looks to provide Janssen with experiences in AI, rotational grazing, haying, brandings, steer selection, ultrasounding, preconditioning, heat detection, pregnancy checking, tractor operation, recordkeeping, fitting and showing, in addition to other educational opportunities such as local/ regional Jessica Janssen tours and beef industry events. I feel our family-owned and operated ranch has a lot to offer for education for a young intern, says Casey Maher, ranch owner and third generation Angus breeder. The intern will work side by side with lifetime ranchers. We believe Maher Angus Ranch and Jessica are a great match for the first Talon Youth Education Learning Program Internship, adds Jenkins. We are confident that Jessica and her host ranch will learn from each other and both will grow personally and professionally as a result of the experience. 6
7 Lake Elliott Selected for Young Cattlemen s College Lake Elliott, Robert Elliott & Sons Angus, Adams, TN, will represent Angus at the 2017 Young Cattlemen s Conference, hosted by the National Cattlemen s Beef Association. The Angus Foundation is pleased to announce that third-generation Angus breeder Lake Elliott, of Robert Elliott & Sons Angus, Adams, Tenn., has been selected as the Angus representative to the 2017 Young Cattlemen s Conference (YCC), hosted by the National Cattlemen s Beef Association (NCBA). NCBA s YCC program is an opportunity for young leaders to gain an understanding of all aspects of the beef industry from pasture to plate and showcase the industry s involvement in policy making, issues management, research, education and marketing. The opportunity to learn more about all aspects of our end product and the placement/regulation of that product is very important to my operation, Elliott says. Also, the amount of interaction with legislators in the YCC program allows for some guidance in what needs to be done to ensure a future. Robert Elliott & Sons Angus raises 260 registered Angus cattle, and Elliott serves as herdsman for the operation. Elliott s leadership skills blossomed as a teenager, serving as a Tennessee Junior Angus Association director for four years and then as vice president. He also represented Tennessee as a voting delegate in National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) elections. As a teenager, Elliott also served as a voting delegate to the annual Angus Convention of Delegates, a role he has served in more than 10 times, to date. Elliott has a degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) in animal science with emphasis in production and management. During his college years, Elliott was a member and officer in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the UTK Student Cattlemen s Association and Block & Bridle. He s also been a member of NCBA for 20 years and has attended the NCBA Convention. Elliott has served for six years as an advisor to the Tennessee Junior Angus Association and served as the adult chair of the education committee at the 2012 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). He has also served six years on the Tennessee Angus Association board of directors. He participated in the 2009 Beef Leaders Institute. My involvement with youth activities has been the most rewarding, Elliott says. I believe our junior members will carry the torch for our breed and its place within the beef industry. Several junior members that I once mentored are extremely successful adult members today. Outside the Angus industry, Elliott has also stepped into leadership roles. He served for six years as a director of the Tennessee Beef Industry Council, and four of those years as vice chairman. In addition, Elliott has served three years as Montgomery County Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers president. Lake is a natural born leader, says Chuck Grove, Forest, Va., one of Elliott s references. He is precisely the type of individual this program was designed to assist future leaders of the beef industry. We feel that Lake will be an outstanding representative of the Angus Foundation, says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. His outstanding leadership skills, achievements and passion for giving back to the Angus breed made him the ideal choice for the YCC opportunity. What Will Be Your Legacy? 8 President s Message Milford H. Jenkins Hello from your friends at the Angus Foundation! It s my hope that after reading this newsletter, you too, will glean a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction seeing your charitable financial support to the Angus Foundation making a difference. Whether through Raising the Bar Conferences, Young Cattlemen s Conference (YCC) or scholarships during this time of year, your gifts are empowering our Angus youth and providing beef cattle producers the opportunity to learn invaluable leadership skills and continued education. In July, at the upcoming National Junior Angus Show, more than 100 Angus Foundation undergraduate and graduate student scholarships will be distributed to outstanding Angus youth from across the country, totaling $216,000. Our portfolio of awards presented at the NJAS continues to grow each year. This year will be no different, as we ll be awarding the inaugural Pat Goggins Memorial Angus Scholarship, Joe Bill Meng Memorial Scholarship and Joel Harrison Memorial Scholarship. All of these investments in Angus youth and consumers of Angus genetics make a positive difference in advancing the Angus breed, as evidenced here. Whether through Angus youth, educational and leadership programs, or beef cattle research, generous charitable gifts enable the Angus Foundation to fund these noble pursuits and continue to progress forward.
