3 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Since its beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed over $430 million to educational and youth programs for students in the State of Texas. Currently, more than 2,400 students are on Show scholarships, attending more than 80 different Texas colleges and universities. In 2018, the HLSR Scholarship Program will award and fund more than 750 scholarships to outstanding Texas students. The Show s more than 33,000 volunteers donate countless hours each year to make the Show a success. Their efforts, along with the support of sponsors, corporate contributors, scholarship donors and auction buyers, are building a future for deserving young men and women in Texas. 3

4 GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS To be eligible for a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship, an applicant must: be a citizen of the United States and be a Texas resident graduate from high school during the school year have made a formal application to enroll with intent to attend a Texas college or university and participate in a curriculum leading to a bachelor s degree Texas college must be Accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Not-for-profit 4

5 AREA GO TEXAN SCHOLARSHIP 79 Area Go Texan scholarships will be awarded $5,000 four-year renewable scholarship (totaling $20,000) At least one winner is selected from each participating county. In addition, 11 scholarships are awarded at a district level 5

6 AREA GO TEXAN SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS Must score at least 950 on SAT 19 on ACT Must be in the top third (1/3) of the graduating class Must meet General Scholarship Qualifications Attend a public high school in one of the 68 participating counties 6

8 EXHIBITOR SCHOLARSHIP 30 Exhibitor Scholarships will be awarded $5,000 four-year renewable scholarship (totaling $20,000) Must be exhibitor in current (2018) and one of three prior years Graduating seniors only Limited to small number of programs initially from Horse Show and Livestock Show Qualification criteria 950 on SAT or 19 on ACT Homeschool Students eligible to apply enter 1 of 1 for class rank on application Private School students are also eligible to apply for this scholarship program. 8

10 TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP 5 Technical Scholarships will be awarded to student s pursuing an Associate s Degree or Certificate program in an approved technical field Applicant must have participated in the HLSR Agricultural Mechanics Show and/or Tractor Technician Competition $4,500 two-year renewable scholarship (totaling $9,000) Applicants must submit online application No SAT/ACT/Class Rank requirements Texas college must be accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and must be not-for-profit 10

11 HLSR SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS For 2018, the Show will fund 140 scholarships through partnerships with the Texas 4-H and FFA programs. Scholarship recipients are selected by the program, provided the applicant meets basic Show requirements. Students are required to submit applications directly to the program and must meet the qualifications set by the program and the Show. 11

12 HLSR SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS Must score at least 950 on SAT 19 on ACT Must be in the top quarter (1/4) of the graduating class. Must participate in the 4-H or FFA program and apply directly through that program, Must meet General Scholarship Qualifications. *See program for additional requirements and deadlines. 12

13 ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP $1.2 million in scholarships to current HLSR scholarship recipients $4,000/semester, up to 4 semesters and is awarded based on semesters remaining in undergraduate studies Must have completed a minimum of 4 semesters of college by the end of Spring 2016 semester Students must be classified as college Juniors and have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher Application available through their HLSR Scholarship account in April and due in June. 13

15 APPLICATION PROCESS Applications must be completed and submitted online Applications can be started, saved, and edited before the student is ready to submit it Applicants are also required to submit the following documents via mail Scholarship Application Summary Individual Scholastic Record (ISR) Authorization Form Official Transcript FAFSA Student Aid Report Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, no exceptions Once the application is submitted, students receive a confirmation along with links for the required forms.

16 INDIVIDUAL SCHOLASTIC RECORD Applicants are responsible for having the ISR certified by the high school counselor or registrar and collecting all supporting documentation. Home schooled students are not required to provide class rank and ISR must be completed by parent of legal guardian. The ISR and documentation include student s class rank student s anticipated graduation date GPA with the high school s maximum GPA official high school transcript verification of SAT or ACT score high school counselor or legal guardian certification 16

17 FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) Applicants must complete the FAFSA and submit their Student Aid Report (SAR) The FAFSA application is available online October 1, 2017 Families will report their 2016 tax return information. The Show provides students with an example of an official SAR 17

19 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If SAT scores are used, the highest score for each section can be taken from different test dates The math and verbal section of the SAT must be added together to get a final SAT score A print out of test scores from College Board is acceptable. If SAT/ACT scores are on the transcript, that will count as an official record We will only accept an official transcript, copies are not permitted 19
