Traveling from Hawaiian papaya groves, to banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, the film looks at the polarized debate on GMOs and the fear, distrust and confusion surrounding the topic. It enlists such experts and icons as Mark Lynas, Alison Van Eenennaam, Jeffrey Smith, Andrew Kimbrell, Vandana Shiva, Robert Fraley, Marion Nestle and Bill Nye, as well as farmers and scientists from around the world, in an effort to separate the hype from the science and unravel the debate around food. The 2017 College Aggies Online scholarship program is the perfect opportunity! College Aggies Online (CAO) is an initiative of the Animal Agriculture Alliance, a nonprofit organization that helps bridge the communication gap between farm and fork. CAO is a nine-week program open to any college student or collegiate club interested in agriculture. To earn points, individuals will complete weekly assignments, connect with industry mentors and post on social media while clubs will host events on their campus to engage with peers about agriculture. At the end of the program, the top three individuals and clubs with the most points win scholarship money and the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC for the Alliance s 2018 Stakeholders Summit where they can meet future employers. The program kicks off September 10 and students are able to join through October 1. Message for Students Hidden in Center s Researcher Spotlights Every day researchers from across the U.S. impact what the world knows about its food. The Egg Industry Center, located at Iowa State University, works to introduce the public to the professionals who work on the science that impacts their egg supply. We started our researcher spotlight effort with a list of well-known researchers who are impacting the industry with their work, says Lesa Vold, EIC Communications Specialist. However, this most recent interview was the second notable professor we have reached who has retired in the last year, and just last week I learned of another upcoming retirement. Vold thinks there is an important message here for students. These researchers provide so much important expertise for our industry and they each fill an important niche role in positioning the industry for success, she said. It is important for students to look at the large variety of career opportunities that exist because the opportunities may be broader than you think. Vold points out that while a new graduate isn t going to immediately fulfill the open position of a seasoned researcher, someone will move up, and that creates an opportunity for someone new. Her advice for students is to talk to someone within the area of interest they want to pursue. This contact can likely help a student find out if their path will yield the career they are hoping for, and it may help them decide where to invest their efforts for internships or work opportunities while they are in school, she says. Who 5

6 knows, maybe one of the next most notable egg specialists is getting started right here, right now, at ISU! Other editions of the EIC researcher spotlight can be found here. 6
