As the year gets busy with sports practice and other school activities, I encourage you to look at your calendar and pencil in 4-H Club Meetings. October is the beginning of a new 4-H year so we will be celebrating our past year with an Awards Banquet in November! 2 4-H Camp Scholarships This year there are Camp Scholarships available through 4-H Council thanks to the generous donations from Heritage Tractor of Pittsburg, Specialty Risk Insurance, and Community National Bank. These are limited to one per-youth per-year. To be eligible for this you must complete a Talk/Demonstration at County 4-H Club Days. The Scholarship will be refunded up to $100 upon the youths return from camp. This is a great way for youth to experience more youth development opportunities! Please call Will if you have any questions. 4-H Online system opens October 1, 2018 for a new year. Step-by-step instructions can be found on our Crawford 4-H website or at The system will save your information from last year. If you are a returning member do not create a new account. Please use the forgot password option if you don t remember your information from last year. New families will need to follow the instructions for new families on our website or at Paper enrollment options are available in the office. The state 4-H office is charging a $15 fee per child that can be paid using 4-H Online or by mailing in a check to the state. Our local office can NOT accept money. When you fill out the online enrollment you can apply for a fee waiver. I strongly suggest families utilize this option. PLEASE do not stop participating due to the fee. Contact Will because there are options available. County & State Fair Entries Please pick up county and state fair entries at the Extension Office as soon as possible! Any county fair entries left after the awards banquet will be disposed of. Base bid and ribbon money are also in the office. Please plan to get these picked up as soon as possible. Contact Will if you need to make other arrangements to get your things. District-Wide Officer Training There will be a district wide officer training on October 25 th at North Lawn Elementary Neodesha starting at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements have been made for local community members to assist with this training. We hope to use this as a training and a social event. We encourage you to come play some games, meet youth from other counties, and enjoy some snacks!

3 Volunteers! Volunteers must renew their certification very three years with an application and background check. As agents, we truly appreciate the time you spend with our youth. You are the reason 4- H works and we can teach our youth leadership, responsibility, good morals, and hands-on learning! We want to ensure our youth are safe and have the best environment around them to continue learning these things. You can help us by filling out the required paperwork. Then your certification will be good for another three years! Do you know someone that is good at cooking, sewing, rockets, legos, etc. and would be a great volunteer to help 4-H youth? Have them contact the Extension office! We are always looking for volunteers. Being a 4-H volunteer does not mean you have to attend every monthly meeting. Maybe you only help with gardening project meetings twice a year! Volunteers will need to go through the certification process November 27, :30 p.m. Girard High School Cafeteria RSVP by October 26 th to the Extension office 4-H members please invite your livestock buyers, plaque sponsors, and all 4-H volunteers to join us for our annual awards banquet November 26 th. The meal is provided by 4-H Council and everyone is invited to attend! {Youth if you plan to be at the banquet please RSVP. We will be changing the way we announce awards this year and would like to know in advance who will be present.} Shooting Sports Interested in the Smallbore pistol 4-H project, then now is the time to contact Brian Sanford, 4- H Shooting Sports Pistol instructor, If your 4-H member is interested in either Air Pistol or Smallbore Pistol. Brian will have information on age requirement, possible and practice dates. The 4-H member must be enrolled in the project. If you want to know more about becoming a Shooting Sports Instructor, contact Dan Mosier, , for details.

4 Paper Clovers Tractor Supply Tractor Supply will be hosting a Paper Clover event October 3-14, The Pittsburg Tractor Supply Store will be participating in this event. Consumers are asked to donate a dollar at the checkout. 4-H groups will then be able to seek scholarships from the store. Clubs should have received information about setting up tables at the Pittsburg Store October 3-14 th. I encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to promote 4-H. 4-H Dog Conference The dog conference held at Rock Springs 4-H Center will host educational classes on: Track 1: 1. Building Backyard Agility; 2. Dock Dogs; 3. I ve Got a New Puppy, Now What; and 4. Constructing Dog Toys through 4-H Citizenship; and 5. Canine Good Citizen. The event will be October or day only registrations are accepted. For more information, see the Kansas 4-H events page. Kansas Youth Leadership Forum & Volunteer Forum The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum for youth ages Delegates will experience workshops, a guest speaker, fun and educational activities, election of the New Youth Leadership Council and more. This is a great opportunity for older youth that are looking to grow in their leadership. This would be a great addition to a scholarship letter. Simultaneously at this conference they will be holding a training for volunteers. The early bird registration deadline is Oct. 15th. Normally a van of youth from our district attend this event. If you have questions about what happens at the forum contact agent Cheri Nelson. 4-H Robotics SpaceTech Experience Participants will learn how to program robots and use sensors. There will be a final team robot competition. Other engineering activities include making a catapult and launching pencil erasers, plus much more. There will be a tour of the Cosmosphere, a planetarium show, and a digital dome program. Registration includes three meals, two breaks, and an overnight stay. The experience will begin Friday, November 16, at 4 p.m., and will end on Saturday, November 17, 4 p.m. Cost will be $115 for youth between 9-18-years old and $115 for all adult participants. All youth must have a designated chaperone to attend. The deadline to register on the Kansas 4- H website is October 1st. Bird Feeders We still have bird feeders thanks to a generous donation by Tractor Supply Company of Pittsburg. 4-H Council is selling a variety of bird feeders to raise money for 4-H participation fees. There is a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes with suggested donations of $15 for large, $10 for medium, and $5 for small. We also have some bird seed and scoops for a $5 donation. You may pick up a feeder and leave a donation at the Extension office in Girard.

I encourage your club to plan something special to reach members of our communities and youth who are not in 4-H. Creating a poster to display at school, giving a presentation to a church group, or displaying a project at a business are all good examples.
