2 P a g e 2 R o t a r i p o s t Women and Rotary At the Large Club Conference in January it was mentioned many times that May 2017 was of great significance and that we should honor an event that happened 30 years ago. I m speaking about the landmark decision in the case of the Board of Directors of Rotary International vs. the Rotary Club of Duarte, CA (May 4, 1987). This little club had 8 members. The male superintendent of schools invited two female school principals to join their club, Mary Lou Elliott and Donna Bogart, followed a few weeks later by Rosemary Freitag who was a psychologist. It was strange that after the Supreme Court decision was made forcing the issue of women joining Rotary there was no communication from Rotary International until the next dues bill went out. There was never any other notice sent to the Duarte Club from Rotary International indicating agreement or disagreement with the Supreme Court decision. A member of that same club, Susan Whitlock, became the first female president of any club in the entire world and because the first female club president to attend an international convention. Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. wrote, Indeed, by opening membership to leading business and professional women in the community, Rotary Clubs are likely to obtain a more representative cross-section of community leaders with a broadened capacity for service. One member of our club told me that this is why Rotary in the U.S. is doing well and the Rotary Club of Shreveport is doing well. It is our hope that this will reemphasize the SERVICE ABOVE SELF motto and that these organizations will obtain new volunteers! For the next five weeks, you ll learn about the opportunities available for participation. On May 30 th, you ll have the chance to bid on the committee you want to join. The fifth and sixth groups of committees are Youth Service and Raise & Give Services. Youth Service Committees Director: Hardy Foreman RYLA Encourage members to send their children/grandchildren to Camp Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Determine a member participation activity at RYLA. Interact Re-activate the Interact Club at Green Oaks High School and determine methods for our members to support the Interact students. Chair: Lawrence Brandon. Rotaract Continue supporting and encouraging the BPCC Rotaract Club. Invite and include them in our service activities and encourage our members to attend their meetings. Raise and Give Service Committees Director: Milton Hutchinson Rotary Club of Shreveport Foundation Encourage donations to RCoS Foundation. Educate members about our club s foundation and what we do via the foundation. Chair: Sarah Collier. Fundraisers & Events Determine member family fun events and fundraisers for member involvement. Chair/Co-chair: Scott Wysong and Merrill Wautlet. Scholarships Work with local colleges/universities to obtain applicants. Choose winners and present the awards at a Rotary meeting. Chair: Alan Prater. Grants Manage the grant process from announcement, applications, review, award, and completion report. Share grant recipients contact information with the Programs Committee. Chair/Co-chair: David Cook, Mike Ferrell.

Larry is the owner of Transportation Provider Services. He is a native of Memphis and received his BBA from Memphis State University. His first Rotary connection was his 3 year membership at the Rotary Club of Bossier City. He joined our club in 1997 and was sponsored by Tom Arceneaux. Larry was elected club director and then moved up the executive chain to become club president in He then served as Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 6190 from He maintains 100% attendance either here at his home club or visits other clubs for make-up credit, including clubs out of the country when he is traveling.
