2 Message from the Board of Directors The Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer Association (HHSVA) celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. In January 2000 our organization was formed out of the merger of two long standing and historic organizations, the Hamilton Civics and Chedoke-McMaster Volunteer Associations. Combined, both organizations had contributed almost 200 years of service to their respective hospitals. Although we have progressed to become a much larger and more complex organization when compared to our beginnings in the early 1900 s our goal remains unchanged. We continue to strive each day, just as our predecessors did, to support our hospitals and enhance patient care. It is my pleasure to report that we have had another successful year. This fiscal HHSVA donated over $1.7 million to Hamilton Health Sciences through our various funding streams including the final installment of our five-year, $2.5 million bed replacement program. This year marks the end of my tenure as President of the HHSVA Board of Directors. Congratulations to Gary Guthro who will begin as our organization s new president in June. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff, volunteers, Board of Directors members for their tireless efforts to ensure the success of this organization. On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to thank Louise Taylor Green, Vice-President of Human Resources and Organizational Development, who has served as the HHS liaison on our Board of Directors for over two years. The expertise and insight that she brings to the table is invaluable to our organization and has helped to foster our strong relationship with HHS. The achievements that our organization has experienced over the years would not have been possible without the leadership of our Executive Director, Tina Cooper. Her vision, drive and commitment to HHSVA s success is inspirational and it has been my distinct pleasure to work with her during my term. When considering all of the people who contribute to the success of our organization it has never been more true to say that the whole really is the sum of its parts. Ray Freckleton President, HHSVA Board of Directors Message from Hamilton Health Sciences Congratulations to the Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer Association (HHSVA) on another successful year. This year marks a special year for the HHSVA the 10th anniversary since the Chedoke- McMaster Hospitals and Hamilton Civic Hospitals Volunteer Associations amalgamated to become the Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer Association. We re lucky to have such a dedicated group of individuals working together for the benefit of our family of hospitals. From the operation of gift shops and cafeterias to creating a healthy environment through the Good for You program in all food service locations, the HHSVA enhances our hospitals for patients, visitors and staff. In the past year, HHSVA contributed $500,000 to replace outdated beds across the organization. It also provided more than $470,000 in funding to purchase essential equipment such as specialized wheelchairs that are integral tools in the rehabilitation of patients in various areas of our hospitals. Items such as these not only enhance patient comfort but they also allow our staff to provide better service to patients when they turn to us for vital care. On behalf of everyone at Hamilton Health Sciences, I want to thank the HHSVA for its ongoing commitment to making our hospitals as comfortable and caring as possible. 3 Capital and Patient Services Donations Annual Donations $1,746,720 Volunteer Recognition 3% Volunteer Resources 11.7% HHS Staff 10.2% McMaster Children s Hospital 4.1% Capital Equipment Capital equipment funding requests are submitted to HHSVA annually. The Board of Directors selects items based on the priority of need and funds available. In 2009/10, the following capital equipment donations were provided: Patient Services 21.3% HHS Capital Equipment 49.6% Bed Replacement Program $500,000 Year five of a $2.5 million, 5-year bed replacement commitment across HHS hyperbaric chamber $67,884 Used in the treatment of various conditions including carbon monoxide poisoning and healing of difficult wounds 2 SUPINE HIP POsitioning systems $61,264 Provides support and maneuverability to the patient s limbs during orthopedic surgery Patient Services Each year HHSVA receives requests from departments across HHS for funding to support patient programs and purchase equipment. The Board of Directors evaluates these requests and allocates funds for items which will have the largest impact on enhancing patient care. The following are examples of items donated in 2009/10: Pressure reduction mattresses, blanket warmers, specialized walkers and wheelchairs Patient care equipment accessories including cushions and backrests for wheelchairs Funding support for patient care programs such as the Social Work Emergency Fund Furnishings for waiting rooms, family lounges, sun room areas, and patient rooms Rehabilitation devices and funding for patient recreation programs Servo Ventilator Machine $51,900 Supports respiration in patients who are unable to breathe on their own by moving oxygen in and out of the lungs 4 radiology monitors $50,502 Specialized monitors with enhanced sensitivity which enables radiologists to observe subtle neurological changes in patients Nerve integrity monitor $35,457 Allows for continuous monitoring of nerve function during surgical procedures Ultraview monitor $17,661 Touch screen monitor which allows for the observation of several patients simultaneously from a central location MObile ECG unit $16,385 Enables rehabilitation patients to have ECG tests done at their bedside Make a Purchase, Make a Difference Without the ongoing support of the staff, patients and visitors of Hamilton Health Sciences the donations made by HHSVA each year would not be possible. All profits raised through the operation of our various retail outlets and services are directed back into our hospitals through the purchase of critical medical equipment and funding for patient care programs. 4 Message from the Executive Director I am pleased to provide an overview of our fundraising results for this year. Total revenue exceeded $10.8M and although we experienced a decrease in comparison to the previous year we can still be proud of our contribution to HHS despite numerous challenges experienced throughout the year. In total we donated over $1.7 million towards enhancing patient care at HHS with over $800,000 being directed to fund a wide variety of patient care equipment items. Changes at the hospital sites had both positive and negative effects on our operations this year. At McMaster we experienced a decrease in revenue as a result of construction in the lobby and loss of the flower shop space. Our Chedoke operations also saw a decrease in revenue with the temporary closure of the Oasis Coffee Shop due to the move of the rehabilitation department to the General. The opening of the new rehabilitation and research buildings at the General brought increased traffic and contributed to record sales of $3.2 million. Finally, St. Peter s joined the HHS family of hospitals with HHSVA assuming operation of the gift shop and vendor program. We were pleased that many of our objectives were accomplished including: Increasing revenue from our floral website Implementing an -a-patient program for HHS Receiving positive customer feedback results with 72% of our customers responding that their expectations were exceeded Maintaining a staff satisfaction rating of 89% Decreasing staff turnover from 50% to 26% Reaching our target for overall labour cost percentage despite reduced sales and continuing increases to the minimum wage rate Growing our catering sales to over $710,000 As we look to the next year, we will be making substantial investments in order to improve our operations and our results including: expansion of the Barton Bean, addition of a new coffee shop at the Rehab Building, and implementation of a new POS system for all of our gift shops. 5 Message from Volunteer Resources Volunteer Resources is an integral part of Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS). Our dedicated volunteers support various hospital programs, enabling Volunteer Resources to assist in enhancing the quality of services that HHS provides. Aligning our own department goals with that of the organization ensures that the work we do adds value to all members of the HHS community, including patients, visitors, staff and fellow volunteers. In April 2009, HHS celebrated National Volunteer Week. Over the past year, 12.5 million Canadians gave 2.1 billion hours of their time, energy and skills to benefit their communities. At HHS our almost 1,500 volunteers contributed approximately 100,000 hours. Volunteers are selfless individuals who demonstrate their genuine compassion for the wellbeing of others. They support essential causes by taking action and making a real difference. This year was especially challenging for our volunteers as they balanced their own personal safety and their commitment to helping others during the H1N1 pandemic. I m proud to report that the pandemic had minimal impact on volunteer activities with the majority of placements remaining active during that period. We are grateful for the commitment of our volunteers to remaining steadfast in meeting the needs of the programs that rely on their services. One of these initiatives was the launch of a Standardized Volunteer Opinion Survey to assess the satisfaction of our volunteers. Recommendations from the report will be considered to ensure the volunteer experience at HHS continues to be a positive one.
