1 Formerly called the Service League High School Summer Internship Purpose of the Program It s a summer only scholarship generously funded by the Service League of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. The purpose of this program is to introduce current high school juniors and seniors to career opportunities in healthcare. Selected students spend six weeks during the summer in a hospital environment, immersed in one hospital area of their choice. As part of the program, students will be required to prepare a presentation about their hospital experience that they will share in front of the staff and guests. General Information The Service League Board of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is a volunteer-based fundraising body of the hospital providing financial support for many important hospital programs one of them being the summer scholarship. In 2017, the Service League is awarding thirteen (13) $600 scholarships. Recipients will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours/week for a six-week period during the summer of Recipients will be selected on the basis of a health career interest, participation in extra-curricular activities, and scholastic achievement. Semi-finalists will be invited to an interview with managers of departments they are applying for. Once accepted, students will be required to attend a new volunteer orientation and complete a medical screening that includes a two-step Tuberculosis test and verification of vaccination records. Eligibility 1. Applicant must be interested in working in a hospital setting. 2. Applicant must be a high school junior or graduating senior at the time of application. 3. If you participated in the program last year, you are not eligible to participate again. Applicants must submit the following: Completed application with department selections (2 pages) A letter telling us why you are interested in this opportunity Two letters of recommendation (e.g. from teachers, counselors, supervisors etc.). Letters from family members or friends will not be accepted. Make sure to send all above documents in one mailing. All applications must be received (not post marked) in our office no later than 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 5 th, Incomplete applications or applications received after the deadline will not be considered. You will be giving a presentation describing your summer hospital experience and receive your stipend check. Attendance is mandatory. I will be a junior after the summer can I still apply? Unfortunately, not. You have to be a junior or a senior at the time of submitting the application. We are not able to make any exceptions. I may be going on vacation for a few weeks this summer, can I still apply? It s a six-week program that you have to be able to complete during the summer before going back to school. If you are planning to be gone for more than a week, you may not have enough time to fulfill the requirement. Do I follow a specific format for my one-page write-up? Yes: one-page double-spaced with standard one-inch margins and 12-pt. Times New Roman font. How many applications do you usually receive? On average, we receive 100 or more applications every summer. What is the best way to deliver the application? You can do it either by fax, mail or drop it off yourself in the Volunteer Services office. The office hours are Mon Fri 8am-4:30pm. An application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline. We will not make any exceptions for late submissions. We do not recommend you leaving the application at our information desks as we can t assume responsibility of any items left there. When faxing/mailing/dropping off your application, please make sure all documentation is included as we will not consider incomplete applications. Please do not your application and documentation. Who reviews the applications and conducts interviews? The applications are reviewed by managers of departments you are interested in. The managers then select candidates for an interview. What will my hours be? You have to complete 20 hours a week during six weeks (a total of 120 hours). The hours are during a regular business week Mon Fri. You will have a set schedule of 4 hours a day/5 days a week or 5 hours a day/4days a week. Your department manager will discuss your schedule with you prior to your first day. What is the format of the presentation I have to prepare? It can be a video, a PowerPoint presentation etc. It should be no longer than minutes and address questions regarding your experience. You will receive specific information on your first day. I wasn t accepted, can you tell me the reasons why? Unfortunately, we are not able to provide any specifics in regards to that. We evaluate all candidates on the basis of their interests, future career goals and an organizational fit. It s a very competitive program and the process is very similar to a job search. In an event you are not accepted, we still hope you gain valuable learning experience through this process. I wasn t accepted, can I volunteer instead? Yes, however, we have a very limited number of summer openings, so please let us know as soon as possible and we will try to accommodate your request provided we have an available shift. If you don t make any selections, your applications will be considered incomplete and rejected. Adult Day Services This outpatient adult day care center provides services for individuals with Alzheimer s disease, dementia, post stroke patients, Parkinson s and other medical conditions. In the course of the program, students will work alongside Medical Social Workers, nurses and recreational therapy staff. Students in this department will be assisting with art projects, crafts, bingo, card games, clerical tasks a variety of other activities and duties. Students may also be involved in special projects and meetings to gain a better understanding of patient care. This facility is located off campus, at Church St. and Potter Rd. in Des Plaines. (One Adult Patient Care Nursing Units This opportunity exposes students to an adult nursing unit; students perform various non-clinical tasks to help aid in the comfort and well-being of our patients. The tasks include: responding to call lights, providing comfort items to patients, restocking supplies, assisting with an array of other non-clinical duties. Students may also be involved in special projects and unit meetings to gain a better understanding of the nursing profession and patient care. (Four positions available) Adult Therapies This outpatient facility provides comprehensive physical, occupational and speech therapy services to adult patients with a variety of neurologic and orthopedic diagnoses. Student in this department will have the opportunity to assist therapists in patient activities, provide light clerical assistance, as well as other miscellaneous non-clinical tasks. This facility is located off campus, at Church St. and Potter Rd. in Des Plaines. (One Ambulatory Surgery Center Our Ambulatory Surgery Center performs a variety of same-day surgeries and procedures on both pediatric and adult patients. Students in this department perform various non-clinical tasks to help aid in the comfort and well-being of our patients. The tasks will include: providing comfort items to patients, restocking supplies, providing wheelchair assistance, and other non-clinical duties. Students may also be involved in special projects and unit meetings to gain a better understanding of the nursing profession and patient care. (One Expressions Program This program is part of Older Adult Services. It is designed for people living with the earliest stages of memory loss. Components of the program include camaraderie, support physical activity, mental exercises, creative expression, and education regarding memory loss. Students in this program help with an array of non-clinical tasks including preparing and passing out activity supplies, assisting with discussion groups, and maintaining a clean and organized environment. Students may also be involved in special projects and unit meetings to gain a better understanding of early stage memory loss. Art Therapy and exercise are part of the daily activities. (One position available) Infection Prevention This department provides epidemiological analysis based upon the results of surveillance, causal analysis, device utilization data, infection prevention risk assessment, data management, analysis and presentation. Student in this department will have the opportunity to assist the Infection Preventionists in observation of hand hygiene, environment of care rounds and construction rounds as well as other miscellaneous non-clinical tasks to provide the student with a better understanding of the infection prevention profession. 4 Pediatric Therapies This outpatient department provides therapy services to our pediatric patients. Occupational therapy provides evaluation and treatment to improve children s functional performance in fine motor skills, motor planning and coordination, activities of daily living, and sensory processing. Physical Therapists provide evaluation and treatment to make children as independent as possible with their mobility. Speech-Language Pathologist provides evaluation and treatment to children and adolescents who are demonstrating speech, language, and/or feeding disorders due to a developmental delay, motor delay, or injury. A student place in this department would have the opportunity to assist our staff in patient activities and provide light clerical assistance, as well as other miscellaneous non-clerical tasks. This is the only position that requires the student to be 18 years old by June 1 st, (One Pre-Surgery Our Pre-Surgery department prepares patients for surgeries and procedures on both pediatric and adult patients. Students in this department perform various non-clinical tasks to help aid in the comfort and well-being of our patients. The tasks will include: providing comfort items to patients, restocking supplies, providing wheelchair assistance, and other non-clinical duties. Students may also be involved in special projects and unit meetings to gain a better understanding of the nursing profession and patient care. (One Radiology This outpatient department is on the hospital campus at the Center for Advanced Care. It provides outpatient radiology testing that includes X-ray, Ultrasound, CAT scan (CT Scan) and MRI. Students in this area will provide numerous non-clinical duties such as walking patients to and from the reception area and their testing area, stocking basic supplies in the exam rooms, issuing discs with images to patients and a variety of clerical duties. Students may also be involved in special projects and department meetings to gain a better understanding of the radiology technologist profession. (One Sterile Processing Our Sterile Processing department is responsible for providing sterile supplies and instruments to our operating rooms as well as several other departments throughout the campus. The student will assist our technicians by helping to stock our work stations, putting away supplies and instruments to shelves, and assisting with preparing case carts for surgery. Students handle clean supplies only. It is a great opportunity for those interested in a potential career in Surgical Nursing, MD, or Surgical Assisting, our SPD department gives you great exposure to what it takes to make sure the surgeon has what he/she needs for their surgical patient.
