The Future of Healthcare for Our Community Building on Excellence with the addition of New Single-Bedded Patient Care Unit Graduate Medical Education Conference Center
Mission Statement John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is an accredited 248-bed, non-profit community hospital dedicated to providing a wide spectrum of healthcare services of the highest quality to the residents of Suffolk County in a cost effective manner. As members of the Mather Hospital Family - trustees, medical staff, hospital staff, volunteers and benefactors - we are committed to providing care to the best of our ability showing compassion and respect and treating each patient in the manner we would wish for our loved ones. We will meet or exceed each patient s expectations through the continued collaborative efforts of each and every member of the Mather Hospital Family. Our Vision Mather Hospital will become the best community hospital in New York State. The Mather Pledge We pledge to provide your healthcare in an atmosphere of understanding and com passion. We pledge to provide you with technologically advanced state-of-the-art healthcare, as cost effectively as possible. We pledge to respond quickly to your needs and concerns, to answer your questions and to respect your dignity and privacy. We pledge to serve you nutritious and tastefully prepared meals in a timely manner and following your specific medical needs. We pledge to provide your care in an environment that is safe, clean and pleasant.
A 248-bed facility, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital was the first hospital in the Town of Brookhaven and has provided medical-surgical services to our community since What makes Mather exceptional? Mather Hospital is an independent community hospital that has received national recognition for its high quality of care and patient satisfaction. Mather ranks first among Long Island hospitals on Overall Recommended Care, a weighted average of all of the clinical care processes or core measures as reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Mather received an A for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent group that advocates for safety, quality and affordability in healthcare, for three consecutive periods (2013). Mather is one of only five hospitals on Long Island that earned the top rating. Mather ranks first in Suffolk County for Overall Patient Experience, based on the percentage of patients who rated their hospital a 9 or 10 on a scale from 1-10 in Medicare s Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. Mather also ranks first in Suffolk County on the average of all 10 HCAHPS patient experience questions, above the national and state averages. U.S. News & World Report has recognized Mather Hospital as one of the best hospitals in the region (2013). The magazine analyzed 4,793 hospitals nationwide and recognized 492 hospitals, including Mather, which meet national standards for strong performance and are located in the largest metropolitan regions. Mather s Transitional Care Unit also received a five star rating for the second year in a row (2013). Mather has a reputation in the community for its caring nursing staff. In 2013, Mather was designated a Magnet Recognized hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a prestigious recognition of quality, patient and staff satisfaction, and outcomes earned by only 4 hospitals on Long Island and 7% of hospitals nationwide. 4 Mather s success is also due to the fact that it is a leader in utilizing innovative technologies. It currently is the only community hospital on Long Island which has a 320-slice CT scanner and is performing Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA), an advanced, noninvasive digital imaging procedure used to diagnose heart disease quickly. Mather Hospital is also using a robotic surgery system to perform bariatric, gynecological/ oncological, urological and soon thoracic procedures. This technology provides the surgeon with magnified, high-resolution 3D images of the surgical site and translates their hand movements into precise micromovements. The philosophy at Mather is to treat every patient with respect. We are committed to providing our patients with quality, safe care. We do hourly rounding so we can anticipate what the patient needs. We treat the patients as if they were our family. - Anne Lasota, RN, BSN, 3 South Mather s clinical excellence is recognized by multiple accrediting organizations, including: American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery - Bariatric Center of Excellence (2011) and the Surgical Review Corporation (2013) American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines - Gold Plus Award in Stroke Care (2012) 2
National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers - 3 Year Full Accreditation (2012); one of only three hospitals in Suffolk County Commission on Cancer - American College of Surgeons - 3 Year Accreditation with Commendation (2011) A strong steward of resources, Mather Hospital delivers this extraordinarily high quality of care at a relatively low cost. We are facing challenges due to an aging facility and a changing healthcare environment. We seek your support for a plan that addresses these challenges and brings the care Mather provides for you and your family to an even higher level of excellence. The plan has three core elements: A 35-single-bedded patient care unit Mather has a strong commitment to quality and patient safety. At any time we have a number of initiatives, such as the protocols to prevent patient falls, reduce infections and ongoing education for nurses. And we include the patient in the decision-making process regarding their plan of care. - Frederick Albano, RN, MSN, Telemetry Offices and teaching facilities to support a Graduate Medical Education Program with residencies in Internal Medicine, Family Practice Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year State-of-the-art conference center 3
Exceptional. Caring.
Patient centered.
Why does Mather need to build 35 new patient rooms?
The last time Mather Hospital built a patient room was 30 years ago. Patient needs have changed. Single-bedded rooms are the standard in healthcare today, but private rooms make up only 13% of Mather Hospital s medical-surgical patient rooms. The project will create 70 single-bedded rooms by building 35 new private rooms and converting 35 semi-private rooms. The current lack of private rooms means patients are kept waiting in the Emergency Department. Mather Hospital often operates at 90% plus bed occupancy, making finding a bed difficult due to infection control and same-sex roommate requirements. Quiet plays an important role in the healing process. Patients rate Mather highly on satisfaction surveys, however noise around the room continues to be a challenge. Additional private rooms will help to reduce the level of noise that patients experience. The rise of superbugs that are resistant to treatment is leading to more serious infections. While Mather has an excellent infection prevention program, private rooms will further reduce the risk. Studies show that single-bedded rooms reduce the length of a hospital stay. 1 The percentage of our population over age 60 is growing rapidly. This segment of the population is the biggest utilizer of hospital services. By increasing efficiency and reducing length of stay, more private rooms will help to ensure Mather has the capacity to care for our community members. 1 A Cost-Benefit analysis of Private Versus Semi-Private Inpatient Rooms in a New Hospital, Anthony E. Boardman, Van Dusen Professor of Business Administration, University of British Columbia and Diane Forbes, Industry Canada, Ottawa, May 16, I have been a nurse for more than 30 years and have witnessed rapid and significant changes in healthcare. The new 35-single-bedded unit will, above all, address our patients and families expectations for privacy. In addition, we will be better able to meet patient placement needs based on isolation needs, and minimize patient transfers by bringing the latest technology, such as cardiac monitoring, to the bedside. - Grace Ebinger, RN, Nurse Manager, 2 East 7
Decentralized nursing stations are better for care because nurses and aides are closer to their patients. We can hear what s going on and can respond quickly. Patients family members can easily find us. It s reassuring to have a nurse right outside your door. - Jeanne Brennan, RN, BSN, 2 East My patients are very ill with multiple symptoms. They are often suffering and sometimes at end of life and there is an amount of dignity that the patient can preserve when they can be (in a single room) with their families and have invaluable, quality time. - Alice Kolasa, DO, Palliative Medicine 8
Single bedded patient rooms are not a luxury but a necessity. This environment lets us better manage our bed placements and reduce infections; it promotes privacy, quiet, patient satisfaction and, overall, healing. Marie Mulligan, RN, Chief Nursing Officer/VP At Mather we always strive to enhance the patient experience. The new unit will improve safety and quality of care as well as provide added comfort for individual patients. The addition of the Residency Program will give patients more time with the physicians caring for them and, in turn, improve communication between patient and physician. - Michael Tofano, MD, Director of Hospital Medicine 9
What do you expect from a healing environment?
Now. Only 13% of the rooms are single bedded. Most patients experience 3-5 room transfers per hospital stay. During periods of high occupancy, patients are held in the Emergency Department due to the unavailability of an appropriate bed. Patients tell us that noise levels are too high. Soon, with your help. The majority of patient rooms will be single bedded. Telemetry monitoring capacity will be increased. Better room management will decrease or eliminate the need for room transfers. The hospital environment will better support a patient-focused, decentralized nursing model. A rooftop garden will offer a natural respite for patients and families. Families involvement in the healing process will be better supported because of the unit design. Patients will have a quieter healing environment. More patients will have their own bathroom and shower. Single rooms will offer more appropriate space for a growing palliative care program. Patients risk of infection will be further reduced. 11
Why does our community need a Graduate Medical Education Program?
Ninety-five percent of Long Island hospitals report that there is a shortage of primary care physicians in the region. One out of four primary care physicians on Mather s medical staff will be of retirement age in the next five years. There is also a shortage of psychiatrists and physicians trained in geriatrics. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), by 2020 there will be 45,000 too few primary care physicians nationally. Furthermore, AAMC recommends there should be an additional 2,000 graduate medical education training positions in primary care per year until 2020 to adequately address this shortage. Healthcare Reform will increase the number of New Yorkers insured by 1.2 million people, significantly adding to the demand for primary care physicians. At the same time, large numbers of our community members are entering their retirement years, when they will most utilize hospital care. Upon the completion of their residencies, many doctors will choose to practice and establish roots in the community in which they trained. In addition A state-of-the-art conference center will facilitate high quality education opportunities for future and present doctors, nurses, other clinicians and our community. Advanced teleconferencing technologies will engage experts from around the world in the training of our residents and the clinical development of our community physicians. Nurse education leads to improved patient outcomes and is a priority for Mather Hospital, which recently received Magnet Recognition status, a prestigious recognition of healthcare quality. The Residency Program highlights leadership and academic skills that will enable the graduates to cater to the healthcare needs of our community and in particular the geriatric population. The training years at Mather Hospital also focus on developing the academic skills of the residents through a variety of clinical experiences. - Dinesh Sethi, MD, Internal Medicine One out of four primary care physicians on Mather s medical staff will be of retirement age in the next five years. 13
Who is going to be caring for you in 5 years?
Now. Patients are waiting weeks, sometimes months to get an appointment with a primary care provider in our communities. With more people covered by insurance due to Healthcare Reform, the demand for care will continue to grow. The fastest growing segments of our population are the near-retirement and over 65 age groups, high consumers of healthcare. Our ability to host large meetings and educational seminars for physicians, staff and the community is greatly limited. Soon, with your help. A vibrant primary care medical education program will likely result in some of the residents establishing or joining practices in our communities. An advanced culture of learning and knowledge will flourish. Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs for the attending medical staff will be enriched. Enhanced reimbursements will advance the hospital s future sustainability. The Conference Center will also support high quality nursing professional development that is associated with being a Magnet Recognized hospital. Community symposiums and the more than 20-plus support groups that depend on Mather for meeting space will have access to expanded, improved facilities. 15
Mather has a very talented and expert physician staff. Our residency programs will enhance our clinical quality even further. Physicians who teach must regularly evaluate the evidence supporting their decision making. Residents are constantly questioning: Why should the patient have this treatment? What are the choices? Why make this decision? Thinking through the answers to those questions helps one become an even better physician. - Joan Faro, MD, Chief Medical Officer/VP The GME training experience within our community will ultimately evolve to fulfill the anticipated growing medical needs of our surrounding population. In addition, our program will serve to enhance the intellectual stimulation of our teaching physicians while mutually benefiting their patients. - Alan Kaell, MD, Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Geriatric Medicine (Emeritus) 16
Mather Hospital provides an excellent setting for the training of psychiatric residents. We ve been providing psychiatric services since 1977 and offer a broad range of treatment programs for mental illness. Residents will receive training for adults and adolescents in inpatient, partial hospital and outpatient settings. - Jean McCarrick, RN, AVP, Behavioral Health Today our patients wait a long time to see their primary care physician. And some even seek care in the Emergency Room. It will be wonderful to train physicians, some who hopefully will choose to stay at Mather and provide needed care for our community. - Maritza Groth, MD, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Pulmonary Medicine 17
Why Mather? Why now?
This is your family s hospital. Mather has consistently delivered high quality, compassionate care. And we need to continue to do so. There are undeniable challenges ahead that will affect your care. But with your help We will adequately address the imminent shortage of primary care physicians and meet the growing demand for their services. We will successfully navigate through the uncertainties of healthcare reform. We will better control the spread of infectious diseases that are resistant to current therapies. We will meet patients expectations for privacy and family friendly rooms. We will thrive despite an increasingly competitive landscape. We will uphold our high standards of clinical quality, patient satisfaction and safety. With your support, this project will help Mather Hospital deliver quality in all aspects of care to our communities building on our reputation for excellence. 19
