INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING

OR ALL WHO REATE A EALTHIER ORLD As populations grow and lifespans continue to increase, the world is at its greatest need for exceptional nurses. Our future depends on professional health care providers who more than anything else are passionate about improving the wellness of their patients and improving quality of life for us all. At Indiana University School of Nursing, we envision global communities where clinical nurses, educators, innovators, and scientists lead the way to provide the highest level of care and to promote human health. We are working today, and every day, to realize that vision. But it will take your help. Through For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign, we re seeking to generate the critical private support necessary to increase student scholarships and mentorships, honors programs, and career services. With your support we can expand international service-learning opportunities, grow endowed faculty positions, increase funding for research, and sustain community engagement. Together, we ll fulfill the promise of creating healthier communities, better care, and a more vibrant future for all.

EDUCATING NURSING LEADERS FOR ALL WHO WILL ADVANCE HUMAN WELL-BEING Countless nurses like Roland will go on to tackle critical health issues and shape tomorrow s health care landscape. And for many, entry into our programs depends on financial aid. Scholarship support is one of the most powerful tools we have to help students gain access to a world-class education, regardless of their personal circumstances. Together, we can offer not only scholarships, but also honors programs, mentorships, and career services that will help future nurses find their ideal place in the world. Together, we can empower deserving students to begin their careers. Paying for college was difficult after my mom was injured because she lost her job and needed my dad to be her full-time caregiver. Scholarships made my education possible. Michaela Roland, BSN 15 Recipient of the Dean of Faculties Scholarship, the Mary and Gene Tempel RISE Scholarship, and the Pamela Willhite Scholarship. IT STARTS WITH YOU Undergraduate scholarships enable some of the best and brightest students to attend IU and start their careers with less debt, helping meet the nation s growing need for health care providers. Graduate fellowships and assistantships attract top scholars and researchers to IU, where they generate fresh ideas, assist faculty in teaching and research, and become advanced practice nurses caring for families in every corner of Indiana and beyond. GOAL #1: INCREASE STUDENT SUPPORT To truly thrive, our communities need compassionate and selfless health care professionals with the invaluable abilities to learn and grow and quickly adapt to complex changes. Your support in the form of scholarships makes an immediate impact on our students success, but also ensures that caring, competent nurses will always be there to help people heal and to improve the health of Indiana, our nation, and our world. Building on a legacy of more than a century of progressive health care, we continue to attract bright, passionate nursing students and help them develop into leading scientists, educators, and clinical providers. They re students such as Michaela Roland, BSN 15, whose life was forever changed when her mother became paralyzed and her father needed to stay home to provide full-time care. Inspired by this, Roland pursued an education at IU School of Nursing, where she gained the experience and skills necessary to realize her dreams thanks in large part to scholarship funds.

IT STARTS WITH YOU International servicelearning opportunities extend our care beyond the borders of Indiana and give our students and faculty firsthand perspectives on global health. FOR ALL WHO EXTEND CARE BEYOND BORDERS GOAL #2: CREATE GLOBAL LEADERS Whether it s preventing chronic suffering, helping mothers-to-be have healthy pregnancies, or improving access to better health care, patients needs transcend national boundaries. Meaningful solutions require leaders in nursing who are prepared to bring about change and establish global health initiatives. Amy Knopf, PhD, MPH, RN, IU School of Nursing scientist and faculty member, focuses on the prevention of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. She has conducted projects in sub-saharan Africa to improve community health through the prevention of infectious disease, and at IU, she has partnered with the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions. Knopf is just one of the many scientists who are helping improve the world at local and global levels. Many students have the potential to follow in Knopf s footsteps, but first we must make more international service-learning opportunities available. This is critical in helping our scholars gain the perspectives and skills to think and act across cultures. However, steep costs and restricted funding force many of our aspiring nurses to forgo traveling abroad. With your help, we can eliminate the financial barriers for our students, and ensure that all School of Nursing scholars who seek to share their gifts with the world can do so. Together, we ll help them gain the intercultural perspectives and skills they need to create a healthier future for all. We are preparing nurses to be leaders in global health while tackling the issues that cause major mortality worldwide. Our international work is truly saving lives. Mary Beth Riner, PhD Associate Dean for Global Affairs and Professor of Nursing

Your support will help educate more students like NAOMI MUTEA, DNP 12 BEFORE RETURNING TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AT KENYA S UNIVERSITY OF EMBU WHO ESCAPED FROM WAR-TORN KENYA and started an RN to BSN program that will AND, THANKS TO SCHOLARSHIPS, ATTENDED IU SCHOOL OF NURSING EDUCATE THOUSANDS OF CLINICAL NURSES IMPROVE HEALTH SYSTEMS WORLDWIDE WHERE SHE BECAME THE DEAN OF EMBU NURSING EARNING NOT ONLY HER CERTIFICATE IN NURSING INFORMATICS PROVIDE BETTER CARE FOR COUNTLESS PATIENTS BUT ALSO HER DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE DEGREE ELEVATING WORLD HEALTH ONE COMMUNITY AT A TIME

FOR ALL WHO ENRICH OUR SOCIETY GOAL #3: SUSTAIN FACULTY EXCELLENCE Our faculty deliver the full spectrum of health care education. In addition to mentoring students and developing innovative teaching strategies, they oversee clinical practice and conduct critical research that directly benefit patients and their families. When they re given these resources, they can transform the future of nursing and health care worldwide. Today, our faculty are creating a more dynamic workforce through education, awareness, mentoring, and service learning. Their research is improving health care practices with initiatives as diverse as better lung cancer screening, improved community-based health education, and new applications for music therapy. Our professors findings are shared in scholarly publications and used to inform legislation, which benefits patients and helps to build national and international recognition for the school and, most importantly, improves patient care. One such nurse-professor-scientist is Joan Haase, PhD, RN, FAAN, who holds the Emily Holmquist Endowed Professorship and who created the internationally implemented Resilience in Illness Model (RIM), which helps patients and families to better cope with cancer diagnoses. RIM has been adapted as the guiding framework for research conducted through the Children s Oncology Group Nursing which provides care to all children with cancer in North America, Australia, and New Zealand and is currently being used in two clinical studies funded by multimillion-dollar grants from the National Cancer Institute. Ours is one of the nation s largest and most respected schools of nursing and health care research. With your support, we will expand our research agenda, build upon our faculty s excellence, and continue to empower nurse leaders. IT STARTS WITH YOU Endowed faculty positions and support for research are critical tools for building a superior faculty, and help to foster a community of instruction and innovation. Sharron Crowder, PhD, clinical assistant professor, is using creative strategies to dramatically increase nurse involvement in health policy and advocacy on a national level. She is renowned for her use of innovative strategies in the classroom and creating critical experiential-learning opportunities in the community. Sharron Crowder, PhD Clinical Assistant Professor, IU School of Nursing The work of Haase and Crowder exemplifies how supported faculty can better focus on research, mentoring, and involving students in a rich environment of discovery and demonstrates the high standard of excellence we ve created and are dedicated to maintaining. But attracting and retaining the field s preeminent minds is a challenging task, especially in a highly competitive market. Endowed faculty positions are our best opportunity to meet that challenge head on. Joan Haase, PhD, RN, FAAN Holmquist Professor in Pediatric Oncology Nursing, and Co-Director, Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training Center

GOAL #4: SUSTAIN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The IU School of Nursing has a distinguished tradition of civic engagement, providing direct, hands-on experience for our students as they improve the welfare of countless individuals, families, and communities. But to build even stronger communities, we must find innovative ways to foster health partnerships that extend care to every citizen. Our programs are rooted in real-world experiences and address the most pressing health issues of our time. Community engagement and partnerships provide our students with opportunities to enhance their skills while caring for the most vulnerable families of our region. For example, our Student Outreach Clinic provides free care and professional services in Indianapolis, addressing many needs in the surrounding neighborhoods. Here, the next generation of nurses in collaboration with the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Social Work, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Law, and Public Health apply what they ve learned in the classroom to treat those who would otherwise have limited access to care. IT STARTS WITH YOU Community outreach clinics enable our students to apply and refine their skills in real-world settings, equipping tomorrow s clinical nurses with the practical experiences they need to provide excellent care. We bring our trust relationship to the clinic, while the students bring their skill and energy. Together, there is help for many. FOR ALL WHO CREATE HEALTHIER Jim Strietelmeier Pastor, Neighborhood Fellowship Church, Indianapolis, IN We are making tremendous strides, but we can do even more. This invaluable clinical outreach requires a significant investment. And as needs continue to grow, so too must our funding. With your investment, even more students can experience firsthandlearning opportunities and even more community members can benefit from vital treatment. COMMUNITIES

OR ALL WHO ILL SHAPE HE FUTURE F NURSING Worldwide, nurses are at the forefront of health and wellness. Their work across the continuum of care from prevention and symptom management to palliative and end-of-life care improves the quality of care that patients receive. It is nurses empathy, advocacy, and trustworthiness, though, that cements lasting relationships with patients and their families. We have the ability to provide better care for every citizen. We can empower nurse leaders who will make critical decisions and save lives. We can help the next generation advance health care and human welfare around the globe. But to do this, we need you. We invite you to join IU School of Nursing as we encourage student success, lead global health initiatives, sustain faculty excellence, and fuel innovative programming for the betterment of Indiana and beyond. With your help, our graduates will continue an outstanding legacy that will result in flourishing families, thriving populations, and a stronger society. Together, we can fulfill the promise of a healthier Indiana and a better world for all. The Indiana University Foundation solicits tax-deductible private contributions for the benefit of Indiana University and is registered to solicit charitable contributions in all states requiring registration.
