She began volunteering in the fall of 2013 in Ann Arbor in the Cancer Center as part of her internship at The Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor. This volunteer program is a collaboration between St. Joe's, the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Support Community. The role of a volunteer in the Navigator Program is to help spread information to patients about free support services offered in the community by the American Cancer Society, Cancer Support Community as well as the hospital. It was important to her to provide patients and their family members with the resources they needed, either financial or emotional, in a time when they are facing a major life stressor. She feels she has been able to provide a sense of calm and support to the patients and loved ones she has met during her time as a volunteer. Lauren stated, This experience allowed me to connect one on one with people visiting the chemotherapy and radiation clinics. I believe this volunteer opportunity improves the overall patient experience and I am proud to be a part of it! Our second Volunteer in the Spotlight this month is Lynn Allison. Lynn has been a volunteer at the main hospital information desk for 10 years, after retiring from teaching computer classes at Washtenaw Community College. Lynn s duties at the information desk consist of directing or escorting visitors to their appropriate destination. Lynn is a great source of information, she is knowledge of the hospital offices, facilities and their layout. Plus she knits and crochets beautiful baby hats and chemo hats that she donates to the hospital. Lynn states, I have always had the desire to help others. As a volunteer I am always prepared to help others from all walks of life and treat all people with equal amount of respect, compassion, and empathy. In addition to giving back to the community by volunteering, Lynn has completed 5 marathons!

2 Volunteer Newsletter Page 2 News & Updates Liaison Updates Volunteers are similar to paid staff because: They have received basic hospital orientation, including HIPPA training. They need to receive training from their perspective departments and know their job expectations. Service Guidelines are created by each department describing their duties and responsibilities which every volunteer receives a copy of. They need to know who their dept. liaison is and how to contact them when absent and who they report to weekly. They need to feel needed, valued and be given meaningful work. They need to feel like they are part of your team. They appreciate warmth and attentiveness so they have the freedom to ask questions. Appreciation and respect are the most gratifying forms of recognition for our volunteers. Dress Code Reminders No blue jeans, capris, yoga pants, sweatpants or shorts. No sleeveless or midriff baring tops or workout suits. No sandals of any type. No open toed shoes. No excessive jewelry. No perfume. No visible body piercing except earrings. No head coverings unless for religious or medical reasons. No gum chewing. No bare legs except in an office setting. ATTENTION ALL TEEN VOLUNTEERS Please remember to turn in your jacket and badge to Guest Services between 8 am-4 pm Mon-Fri when your service is completed. Also, please inform your liaison of your last day. A gift and certificate will be mailed to you upon receipt of your jacket and badge.

3 Volunteer Newsletter Page 3 Spotlight What If Disaster Drill On July 9, 2014, a mock disaster exercise was performed at U of M stadium. St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Livingston, Chelsea, St. Mary Mercy Livonia and local emergency agencies participated in a crisis drill involving Michigan Stadium and the University of Michigan Health System. The exercise gave colleagues an opportunity to practice their responsibilities related to a disaster situation. The simulation enacted an explosion at the U of M Stadium requiring allocation of resources and personal staff to respond to the disaster. Many volunteers from St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Schoolcraft College participated in the drill as actors portraying patients. Every patient participant received a card specifying their wounds after the explosion. Staff then treated the patients appropriately based on their condition. The goal of emergency management exercises is to practice, assess and improve emergency response plans. It is important that exercises reflect realistic events that may impact our community. The scenario at U of M Stadium allowed us to test and practice our response to a mass casualty disaster at multiple SJMHS hospitals, said Denise Bechard, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. We had 5 St. Joe teen volunteers participate who we would like to recognize include: Tyler Schaefer, Emily Diehl, Vanessa Moody, Hirva Joshi, Mackenzie Roggencamp, and Anshul Kulkarni. Recipe Quick and Easy Peach Cobbler 1 lg. can peaches with juice (or 6-8 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced) 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 c. flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 egg 1 stick butter Cinnamon Pour peaches into large pyrex dish. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over top. Mix together dry ingredients. Add egg and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over peaches. Crumble/drizzle butter over top and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. - Cooks.com
