1 March, 2014 VOLUNTEER NEWS PAWS PROUDLY SERVING OUR MISSION St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic. ~Adrienne Cook The paws that refresh us! CONTENTS: Page 1 Featured Story Page 2 News & Updates Page 3: Spotlight & Updates Page 4: Birthday Page 5: New Opportunities Dogs are more than man s best friend. They help us overcome life s challenges with their unconditional love. That is why we would like to proudly recognize our pet therapy teams who go above and beyond to put a smile on a patient s face and provide a healing touch. Recently George, one of our therapy dogs healed one of the patients from a Coma. The patient had a severe head injury and was unconscious for a while. George, on his routine rounds visited the patient and with permission of the nurse and patient s mother, was allowed to nurture the patient. And to everyone s surprise she opened her eyes. Stephen Crowell, owner of George said that it was one of the most remarkable experiences he witnessed. David Wilson started volunteering with his first therapy dog, McCoy, in January and he is now ready to volunteer with his second therapy dog, Tulip. When asked what motivates him to volunteer both his dogs at our organization he stated that his values totally match with St. Joe s mission statement, he is committed to caring for people in need. He also pointed out that it is a two-way street the dogs equally enjoy the love and care that patients and visitors offer them as well. David said he is indeed happy to be part of this noble cause.

2 Volunteer Newsletter Page 2 We are all aware that human and dogs have bonded like no other living creatures. One of our visitor said that a therapy dog would distract her from her aunt s cancer. It would cheer her and help her stay positive when she would visit her ailing aunt. Therapy Dogs not only boost mental and physical health of the patients but also family members and staff. They nurture us with their innocence and heal us from pain. We thank all our pet therapy dogs and volunteers for providing a remarkable experience. There isn t a day that passes that these volunteers don't bring smile to someone. News Updates: Mission Statement and Core Values has recently been revised to: We, CHE Trinity Health, serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities. And the core value Excellence has been replaced with Integrity. Core Values: 1.Reverence: We honor the sacredness and dignity of every human person. 2. Commitment to Those Who are Poor: We stand with and serve those who are poor, especially those most vulnerable. 3. Justice: We foster right relationships to promote the common good, including sustainability of Earth. 4. Stewardship: We honor our heritage and hold ourselves accountable for the human, financial and natural resources entrusted to our care. 5. Integrity: We are faithful to who we say we are.

3 Volunteer Newsletter Page 3 SPOTLIGHT: Volunteer Recognition luncheon: It is that time of the year where we honor our volunteers. Invitations are being mailed out to all of you to join us for a luncheon and celebration of our volunteers who have donated there time and talent to our hospital. Share your experience: As it is your event would like you to be the voice of the event. If you have a heart felt story for us or any remarkable experience you would like to share then please contact Darlene Dates and Location: St. Joseph Mercy Saline, April 16, :30-1:30 Community Room St. Joseph Mercy Livingston/ Brighton, April 22, :30-1:30 Community Rooms St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor/Canton April 24, :30-1:30, Senior Health Building, Conference Room Theme: St. Joe s Heart. The idea is inspired from Hikiela Williams, Nurse Manager, 11 E. She believes when your heart is in the right place, you can render the right gratitude and compassion. As volunteers, compassionate care is what you provide to our patients day in and day out, so we thought it would be an ideal theme. Safety Updates: Every Patient, Every Time As the first week of March is recognized as Patient Safety Week. We would like to remind you of our golden rule of hand washing which is vital to patient safety. Wash your hands before handling or eating food, after toilet use, touching pets, coughing, sneezing, or before touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Simply washing your hands or use hand gels which will kill germs and prevent infections. Remember: "Much of your health is in your hands!
