2 Target Audience These conferences are designed for nurses in all practice settings, including Practitioners, Clinicians, Nurse Educators, Public Health, School Nurses and other Health Care Providers who need clinical updates on legal issues, pharmacology, cardiac, laboratory interpretation and neurologic conditions. Nursing Students are always welcome! Conference Outcomes By the end of these programs, participants will be able to apply the knowledge to: Improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers. Function as a role model for avoiding litigation by practicing safe nursing care. Provide evidenced-based care for the aging cardiac patient. Improve the safety of using medications. Implement preventive strategies to slow the development of one s aging heart. Identify the required actions to manage patients with neurological deficits. Report critical results of tests and diagnostic procedures on a timely basis. Call for Posters Consider submitting a poster on any classroom or clinical topic, legal issue or an evidence-based clinical study with implications for nursing practice. Abstracts will be peer reviewed with notification of acceptance within two weeks after submission. Nursing students are welcome to submit a poster abstract as part of a leadership or capstone course. Please note poster presenters must register and pay to attend the conference. Refreshments and lunch will be provided in the exhibit area for maximum exposure to attendees. Special pricing for non-profit organizations. Nursing Contact Hours - (5.5 Hours Each Day) These activities have been submitted to the Ohio Nurses Association for approval to award nursing contact hours. The Ohio Nurses Association (OBN ) is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Speakers Barb Bancroft is a widely acclaimed international speaker, noted for her humorous, entertaining and information packed seminars. She is author of four books her latest, Kiss My Asparagus, An Essential Guide to Nutrition s Role in Health and Disease. Barb has provided more than 3000 seminars throughout the US and Canada. She has provided courses on Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Physical Assessment to both graduate and undergraduate students. Barb is currently the Executive Director and President of CPP Associates, Inc., a continuing health education firm. Mark Hagemeier, Esq. Mark is an Associate General Counsel for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and teaches at the University of Arkansas School of Law. Extremely intelligent and fun, Mark has a great sense of humor that keeps audiences engaged while he presents legal issues nurses face in practice and education all within his perspective as an attorney for the largest medical system and nursing program in Arkansas. Stephanie Johnson, EdD(c), MSN, RN, BC, CNE Stephanie teaches in a BSN program at Morehead State University in KY. She began her nursing career as an ADN graduate and now is nearly completed her doctorate in Teacher Leadership at Walden University. Stephanie s nursing background includes education, leadership, critical care, med/ surg and staff development/clinical mentoring. Stephanie is also an ANCC Magnet Appraiser and serves as the Nursing Services Coordinator for the Kentucky State Police. Donna Rossmeisl-Kear, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNL Donna is a Clinical Educator at Maui Memorial Medical Center and owner of ACLS & PALS of Maui. As a partner in The Gym Maui, she advocates for healthy lifestyles and women s wellness. Donna is active in the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee for Hawaii and the Maui Nurses Scholarship Foundation. Donna s critical care, trauma, and educational background provide a rich mix for an engaging educational event for students to learn and enjoy. Mardie Timken, MSN, RN Mardie has a diverse background in nursing practice including acute care in Med/Surg and ICU; telephone triage, pulmonary rehab, school nursing, 10 years in nursing education and currently working in sales as a regional manager for Hurst Review Services. Attendees will leave the seminar with a better understanding of state and federal laws that effect the practice of nursing and the education of the future nursing workforce. Mark uses a case study approach to discuss a range of topics: the elements of all malpractices actions and why practitioners, educators, and students should understand them; the anatomy of a lawsuit; the state Nursing Board and its jurisdiction; federal laws that impact nurse educators and supervisors, including Title IX and Title VII discrimination, the ADA, FERPA, and HIPAA. Finally, Mark will discuss how social media, state sunshine laws, and affect nursing practice. Nov. 2 - NCLEX Success Strategies for Students Mardie Timken, MSN, RN Donna Rossmeisl-Kear, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNL Stephanie Johnson, EdD(c), MSN, RN, BC, CNE Nursing students are invited to attend this conference in preparation for being successful on the NCLEX exam. Nov. 3 - Pharmacology: Simplify Not Mystify Barb has been teaching Pharmacology to undergraduate and graduate nursing students for over 25 years. Nov. 4 - The Old Ticker - Update on the Aging Heart Barb discusses the changes that occur to the cardiovascular system as we age the cardiac valves, the cardiac muscle, the arterial system and serum cholesterol. She will correlate the common clinical cardiac conditions observed in the aging population chronic heart failure, hypertension, valvular heart disease including aortic stenosis, atrial fibrillation and hypercholesterolemia. Barb will also discuss the myriad of drugs used to treat the various cardiovascular conditions their mechanisms of action, the side effect profiles, drugdrug and drug-food interactions, and polypharmacy. Risk factors will also be discussed for cardiovascular diseases diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, diet, lack of exercise, obesity the usual suspects. Prevention is part of the key to a healthy heart...but aging, in and of itself, is the major culprit for the old ticker.

Wailea Beach, Maui $ Overviews Nov. 7 - Interpretation of Lab Tests Barb s approach to interpreting lab tests is a must hear for nurses in all areas and nurses at all levels. You will leave the seminar with a plethora of practical pearls that can be applied to your patients in the hospital, in the primary care facility, or in the ICU. The WBC and differential is discussed as it relates to viral infections, bacterial infections, and parasitic infections. Iron deficiency anemias will be differentiated from B12 and folic acid anemias and, Barb will give you some helpful hints for patients with lead as a cause of anemia. The lipid profile will be discussed as will liver function tests and clinical correlations. Barb will also correlate various drugs with their effects on lab tests, including chemotherapy, antibiotics, statins, and other lipid-lowering agents. Nov. 8 - Neuro for the Not-So-Neuro-Minded This seminar includes an overview and update of functional neuroanatomy and Neuro assessment. Barb takes a journey through the brain the Cerebral Cortex (all four lobes and their functions), and how to assess the 4 lobes as well as pathophysiology, including head injuries, brain tumors, and dementias; the basal ganglia and assessment, including the patient with a movement disorder Parkinson s disease, Huntington s chorea, and athetosis; the brain stem assessment and clinical correlations including cranial nerves; spinal cord and the reflex arc. It s a great lecture for novices to neuro as well as seasoned neuro nurses everyone learns some new tidbits as well as refreshing some old tidbits. E komo mai i na - moku nani.
