Website The event was a resounding success and was attended by over 100 delegates from across KZN and Cape Town. The theme for the conference was Ethical-Legal Considerations for Nurse Leaders. Legal specialist and attorney Annemie Greeff imparted a wealth of knowledge to nurse leaders on the constitutional rights of patients, significance of the POPI Act, vital principles that form the basis of good patient documentation preventing litigation, and civil law as related to medico legal cases. Alta Dorse presented significant research on the Ethical Issues that confront nurses in Private Hospitals causing nurse leaders to reflect on staffing models used in nursing, scope of practice and delegation of patient care, and ethical-legal issues arising out of those decisions. Nurse Leaders had the benefit of hearing motivational speaker Evelyn Naika, who inspired nurse leaders to celebrate their achievements, their contribution to society and to reflect deeply on professionalism in the workplace and the role of the nurse leader in role modelling professionalism and ethics. Five students registered in a Diploma Programme leading to Registered Nurse were sponsored by the FPNL Chapter to attend this event, in line with our strategy to develop future leaders in Nursing. Feedback and evaluation instruments showed 100% satisfaction with the CPD content and a wide spread interest for more workshops on this theme. Lorraine Gotham

2 Page 2 August is Woman s Month Kindness is an inner desire that makes us want to do good things even if we do not get anything in return. It is the joy of our life to do them. When we do good things from this inner desire, there is kindness in everything we think, say, want and do and family. I believe that the strength of the woman of today is locked up in her inner desire to be kind. Be kind to one another This statement from Emmanuel Swedenborg is what we as woman strive to achieve. Woman s month has been celebrated during August. I hope that the kindness in what you did and say was felt by your colleagues, friends Anneline Van Dyk, Chairperson, Forum for Professional Nurse Leaders in KZN FPNL KZN Chapter Feedback: The KZN Chapter of the FPNL has grown in membership. January 2014 we had 43 members we are hoping to double that figure this year. Facebook has grown thanks to L o r r a i n e G o t h a m d a i l y motivational quotes and Clinical Questions, we have regular followers and at present 326 Likes. Thanks everyone. Application forms for membership will be sent out with all newsletters and you can also get them on our website. You may register for 2015 from 1st of October. Funds raised at each event enable us to book speakers and venues for the next scheduled event.. We value your feedback and input. Please fill out our evaluation forms at each event, Suggestions are also welcome. We are here for you. Communication will be going out soon for our last event for the year. It will be a breakfast meeting for 70 delegates so you will have to book early to avoid disappointment. The date is 31 October so put it in your diary now. We look forward to seeing you there. Facilitator Panel Discussion Dr. Sharon Vasutheven The 2014 Leadership Education and Research Conference, was a first where Nurse Leaders and Nurse Educators joined hands offering an event where the Nursing academia and the nursing practice can appreciate and learn form one another. Through this we would engage in open and constructive dialogue, about Nursing in South Africa. Participating n the Conference we had NEA, FUNSISA, and FPNL. The Conference set the scene for networking with Colleagues from different areas of practice, giving opportunity to get to know various Sectors within the health care industry. The Theme for the conference Discovering New Avenues: Nursing Leadership for Education, Practice and Research speaks to an innovative approach to enhancing the Nursing Profession. It was also a time to reflect on the status of Nursing in South African Nursing after 20years of Democracy. The impact of new Acts, regulations and policies that have brought with them many changes to the Profession in the last 20years. The Keynote Speakers, Dr Judith Shamain the president of the International Council of Nurses. (ICN) and Prof Hester C. Klopper STTI President. It was three day conference with highly esteemed speakers and presenters from our Profession. FPNL Leadership Award We are very proud to announce, and to congratulate Grace Makumbi Professional Nurse from the KZN Region on receiving The FPNL Leadership Award. Well done Grace for leading by example. We are so proud of you and honoured to have you as a Committee member on The KZN Regional Chapter of the Forum for Professional Nurse Leaders. WELL DONE!!!!

Durban University of Technology I wish to salute on this special day unsung heroes in South Africa and these are the nurses. Be proud of yourself because you are very special. No one can do the job that you are doing. This is the time to celebrate our successes and achievements. Let us hold hands in promoting gender equality in South Africa. I call on nurses to take active part and leadership positions in the nursing profession and the country as a whole. Let us join hands and work together. None of us is as smart as all of us (Kenneth H Blanchard). Happy Women s Month Unsung Heroes: August is a women s month used to celebrate women. Nurses make up the greatest number of health workers and are predominantly women in South Africa. Nurses are often called in when health crises set in. Much as we are slowly approaching the Millennium Development Goals, number 4, 5 and 6, the country is quite resilient in health crises like the quadruple burden of diseases. As such nurses are often referred to as the backbone of the health sector. Indeed the Minister of Health Dr PA Motsoaledi recognizes the essential role played by nurses in achieving A long and healthy life for all South Africans (The National Strategic Plan for Nursing Education, Training and Practice 2012/ /17). It is therefore worth celebrating the nurses during the women s month. You are the real rocks (imbokodo) for health in the country. Please pat yourselves at the back for the greatest contribution. Do not allow yourselves to be distracted from achieving your goals which are clearly spelt out in the National Strategic Plan for Nurse Education, Training and Practice (2012/ /17). Remember, you have better resources compared to most of our counterparts in the neighbouring countries that are always pronounced as doing better with less. The South African Nursing Council encourages you to particularly have the hearts of women when dealing with our health care users. Let us not allow our image and professional status as nurses to decline as often cited recently. To our male counterparts we appreciate your company in our efforts to achieve our goals.
