2 SPEAKER S COMMENTARY Demetress Curl-Harrell has been employed in hospice care for more than 22 years and is dedicated to the advocacy of promoting quality end of life care. Demetress currently serves on the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization s Education Committee which is devoted to promoting leadership development, coaching, research and educational training to hospice professionals nationally as well as internationally. Demetress is committed to the evolution of assuring every patient has the right to die with dignity and that families receive the best professional support through individuals as yourselves. Personal Dialogue While Demetress has presented across the nation on topics associated with hospice and palliative care, nothing has better prepared her for the role as an only child caregiver for her father like that of being confronted with the professional role as a provider on a daily basis.

This session will answer the question of what hospice would be like without their presence and define the very essence of their attributes.we hope this will motivate you to build upon their existence.

10 THE IMPACT OF THE HOSPICE VOLUNTEER What is Hospice? Follows a palliative care philosophy. * Primary goal is in reducing severity of disease symptoms rather than providing a cure Offers comfort and dignity to the patient dealing with illness Treats the patient holistically, physically, spiritually, and emotionally Reaches out to the families, caregivers all with incredible support and assistance of the volunteers.. Hospice would not be complete without Volunteers
11 HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS HELP PATIENT S LIVE LIFE Have you ever questioned life without people.. Often when one is faced with a life limited circumstance their life becomes isolated Hospice volunteers provide companionship to people living with serious illness and aid their families by adding quality of life. Hospices rely on volunteers to help with office work, fundraising, community outreach and various other daily operational functions. CMS guidelines require hospices to recruit volunteers. We must have annual Volunteer hours

13 WHAT IS YOUR METHODOLOGY
14 VALUABLE RECRUITMENT PROCESS ASSURES LONG-TERM COMMITMENT Four Key Components I. Great at networking because it defines you have a strong interest in people. A great Volunteer (Coordinator) recruiter has a need to be around and with people II. Exceptional influencing skills, ability to use social strategies (i.e. Facebook, s, phone calls, civic groups) to channel marketing that will target volunteers for the core functions necessary in your hospice program. III. Personalizing and leveraging uniqueness, demonstrate what sets your program apart from other volunteer opportunities. (Why is hospice different; there is power and importance in personalization..rather than rely on a generic recruiting brand, as hospice professionals we must instead brand every volunteer job and staff discipline as unique. IV. Assure the volunteer that your program uses technology; yet is not consumed by it. Hospices are focused on getting results, but what is more important to you is that both the program and the volunteer is successful.

21 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN VOLUNTEER ETHICS 1. Set of principles of right conduct. 2. Identify theory or a system of moral values. 3. Appraise the study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person; moral philosophy. (Validate bounderies) 4. Abide by the hospice rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession.understand proper disclosure.
22 THE ROLE OF VOLUNTEERS IS INVALUABLE The unselfish dedication of volunteers is essential to the important work provided by our nation s hospice programs. Every hospice relies on volunteer support to provide excellent end-of-life care to each patient and their family. By being a hospice volunteer, you will gain tremendous personal satisfaction in the labor of love offered to another individuals life. Hospice helps people live, hospice focuses on caring and not curing while enhancing one s quality. Volunteers are the best marketers for your program. All made possible by the support of volunteers.
