1 ACS Washington, DC Lawyer Chapter BOARD OF DIRECTORS POSITION DESCRIPTIONS * All current dues-paying members of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter are eligible to apply. * CHAIR(S) (1-2) This position is the chapter leader and heads the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter s senior leadership team. Oversee all aspects of the chapter. Serve as liaison between the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter and the ACS National Office. Organize and conduct monthly meetings of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors. Attend and actively participate in most, if not all, monthly committee meetings. Serve as Chair, Ex Officio and train new Chair. Position Requirements: Prior significant involvement in the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors. Time Commitment: hours per month. VICE CHAIR(S) (1-2) This position assists the Chair in leading the chapter. This position is part of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter s senior leadership team. Assist the Chair(s) as needed in carrying out his or her responsibilities. Attend and actively participate in all monthly meetings of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors. Attend and actively participate in most, if not all, monthly committee meetings. Position Requirements: Prior significant involvement in the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors. Time Commitment: hours per month. 1
2 CONSTITUTION IN THE CLASSROOM COMMITTEE The Constitution in the Classroom Committee of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter is responsible for planning and managing the chapter s Constitution in the Classroom program twice a year in connection with Constitution Day in September and Law Day in May. The committee coordinates with the ACS National Office on lesson plans, recruits attorneys to volunteer in the program, and contacts schools in DC to participate in the program. The committee organizes the training for volunteers, schedules schools and volunteers, and evaluates the program at the end of each session to determine areas on which to improve. The Constitution in the Classroom Committee is comprised of two to three Board members, with one designated as Chair, whose job it is to carry out this mission. Constitution in the Classroom Committee Chair (1) Ensure that the Constitution in the Classroom Committee operates in accordance with the aforementioned mission. Manage Constitution in the Classroom Committee Vice Chair(s) and supervise committee work on four areas: (1) lesson plan ideas and implementation, (2) volunteer attorney recruitment; (3) communication with DC schools; and (4) program evaluation. Organize and conduct the orientation for volunteer attorneys. Work closely with ACS National Office to coordinate program, lesson plan, and program evaluation. Organize and conduct monthly Constitution in the Classroom Committee meetings; more frequent meetings will be necessary in preparation for the orientation and teaching days. Attend and actively participate in all ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board meetings or ensure that a designee attends. by the Constitution in the Classroom Committee. Attend and actively participate in as many other ACS DC Lawyer Chapter events as possible in order to represent the CITC Committee and recruit new volunteers. Position Requirements: Prior involvement in the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Constitution in the Classroom Committee or significant related experience on other committees or in other organizations. Time Commitment: hours per month, intermittently, with increased time commitment leading up to teaching days. Constitution in the Classroom Vice Chair (1-2) This position assists the Constitution in the Classroom Chair in his or her work. The Vice Chair may be, but does not have to be, assigned responsibility for one of the four areas, so long as the 2
3 Chair maintains overall responsibility for ensuring that all four areas are completed. Assist the Constitution in the Classroom Chair as needed in carrying out his or her responsibilities. Attend and actively participate in all Constitution in the Classroom Committee meetings. Attend and actively participate in most, if not all, events held by the Constitution in the Classroom Committee, including orientation for volunteer attorneys and teaching days. Attend and actively participate in as many other ACS DC Lawyer Chapter events as possible. Position Requirements: None, but prior experience with recruiting volunteers, teaching, or organizational activities is helpful. Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per month, intermittently, with increased time commitment leading up to teaching days. EVENTS COMMITTEE The Events Committee of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter is responsible for organizing and managing the chapter s speaker and networking events. The Events Committee is responsible for approximately 6-8 events during the year. The Events Committee is comprised of four to six Board members, with one or two designated as Chair, whose job it is to carry out this mission. Events Committee Chair(s) (1-2) Ensure that the Events Committee operates in accordance with the aforementioned mission. Manage Events Committee Vice Chairs and supervise committee work. This includes maintaining and vetting speaker and topic ideas, locating venues for events with an eye towards maximizing outreach efforts of the chapter, and coordinating event logistics. Organize and conduct monthly Events Committee meetings. Assume responsibility for the planning and facilitating of at least one event held by the Events Committee over the course of the year. Attend and actively participate in all ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board meetings or ensure that a designee attends. 3

Attend and actively participate in all monthly Events Committee meetings. by the Events Committee. Attend and actively participate in as many other ACS DC Lawyer Chapter events as possible. Position Requirements: None, but prior experience with programming, networking, or organizing activities is helpful. Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per month. OUTREACH COMMITTEE The Outreach Committee of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter is responsible for managing the chapter s outreach to various people and organizations with an eye towards growing the chapter s membership base, expanding the chapter s reach to other organizations, strengthening the organization of chapter lawyers, and generally promoting a vibrant and diverse network of progressive lawyers within the chapter s geographical reach. The Outreach Committee is essentially the chapter s ambassadors to the progressive legal community in DC. The Outreach Committee is comprised of three to four Board members, with one or two designated as Chair, whose job it is to carry out this mission. 4
5 Outreach Committee Chair(s) (1-2) Ensure that the Outreach Committee operates in accordance with the aforementioned mission. Manage Outreach Committee Vice Chairs and supervise Outreach Committee work on five major topic areas: (1) law firm advisory council program, (2) outreach to non-profits, government agencies, and Hill staff, including opportunities for co-sponsorship; (3) postevent outreach; (4) maintenance of chapter membership list; and (5) assisting with Events Committee work, including suggesting speaker ideas and locating venues for events. Work closely with other chapter committees to incorporate outreach perspective. Coordinate the advertisement of all upcoming ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Programming events and other chapter activities on the chapter Facebook page. Organize and conduct monthly Outreach Committee meetings. Attend and actively participate in all monthly meetings of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors or ensure that a designee attends. Position Requirements: Prior involvement in the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Outreach Committee or significant related experience on other committees or in other organizations. Outreach Committee Vice Chairs (2-3) This position assists the Outreach Chair in his or her work. The Vice Chairs may be, but do not have to be, assigned responsibility for one of the five key projects, so long as the Chair maintains overall responsibility for ensuring that the projects are completed. Assist the Outreach Chair as needed in carrying out his or her responsibilities. Attend and actively participate in all monthly Outreach Committee meetings. Position Requirements: None, but prior experience with outreach, networking, or organizing activities is helpful. Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per month. 5
6 SPECIAL PROJECTS COMMITTEE The Special Projects Committee of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter is responsible for serving as liaison between the chapter and local Student Chapter members, for fostering mentorship and professional relationships among senior members of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter, junior members of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter, and local Student Chapter members, and for assisting the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board Chair(s) and the ACS National Office with various other delegated activities, which in the past have included election protection, teaching events, and moot court competitions. The Special Projects Committee is comprised of two to four Board members, with one or two designated as Chair, whose job it is to carry out this mission. Special Projects Committee Chair(s) (1-2) Ensure that the Special Projects Committee operates in accordance with the aforementioned mission. Manage Special Projects Committee Vice Chairs and supervise committee work in three major areas: (1) serving as liaison to local Student Chapters; (2) striving to foster mentorship and professional relationships among senior members of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter, junior members of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter, and local Student Chapter members; (3) assisting the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board Chair(s) and the ACS National Office with various other delegated activities. Organize and conduct two major events during the year: (1) Progressive Career Panel in the Fall; and (2) speed mentoring event for newer attorneys in the Spring. Organize and conduct monthly Special Projects Committee meetings. Attend and actively participate in all monthly meetings of the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Board of Directors or ensure that a designee attends. by the Special Projects Committee. Attend and actively participate in as many other ACS DC Lawyer Chapter events as possible. Position Requirements: Prior involvement in the ACS DC Lawyer Chapter Special Projects Committee or significant related experience on other committees or in other organizations.
